Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first exhibition to focus on images of artists from within the Royal Collection, 'Portrait of the Artist' not only show-cases self-portraits by world-renowned artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Artemisia Gentileschi, Lucian Freud and David Hockney but also features images of artists by their friends, relatives and pupils, including the most reliable surviving likeness of Leonardo da Vinci by his student, Francesco Melzi. Well-known self-portraits intended to advertise the artist's talents will be shown alongside more intimate and personal works. The exhibition will examine a range of themes played out within these objects, from the 'cult' of the artist to the symbolism evoked through images of the artist's studio. The changing status of the artist over the centuries is another theme and the way in this is conveyed, both in the physical works and in the relationships between artist and patron will be highlighted. The role of monarchs in commissioning, collecting and displaying portraits of artists will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: Fred Herzog's bold use of colour in the 1950s and 60s set him apart at a time when the only art photography taken seriously was in black and white. His early use of color make him a forerunner of "New Colour" photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, who received widespread acclaim in the 1970s. Herzog images were all taken on Kodachrome, a slide film with a sharpness and tonal range that, until recently, could not be reproduced in prints, and his choice of medium limited his exhibition opportunities. However, recent advances in digital technology have made high-quality prints of his work possible, and in the past few years his substantial and influential body of work has been available to a wider audience. Fred Herzog: Photographs showcases this innovative artist's impressive oeuvre in a beautifully crafted volume of early color and urban street photography. Providing authoritative texts are four titans of the art community: Jeff Wall anchors Herzog's place in the history of photography, Claudia Gochmann sets his work in an international context and Sarah Milroy and Douglas Coupland provide additional commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four of the greatest maritime exploring expeditions were crammed into two decades late in the 18th century - Cook's third voyage, the French expedition commanded by La P use, the Malaspina expedition sent out by Spain, and George Vancouver's Voyage of Discovery. All four visited the northwest coast of North America, but weather and circumstances prevented Cook from making more than what Beaglehole calls ' a magnificent, an epoch-making reconnaissance'; La P use only touched the coast in a significant way at Yakutat Bay and Lituya Bay, and Malasina's memorable visits were to Yakutat Bay and Nootka Sound. Vancouver, by contrast, surveyed the enormous extent of coast from Lower California to Cook Inlet, and his meticulous survey literally set out on the map of the world the intricacies of Puget Sound and the western coast of mainland Canada. It was an achievement that places him with his mentor, Cook, in the first rank of marine surveyors. As a midshipman Vancouver had been with Cook when he discovered the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands in 1778. They attracted his interest, and the attention he devoted to the islands, their inhabitants and their political future when he twice later wintered there will surprise many. This is the first annotated edition of Vancouver's journal as he revised it for publication in 1798. The original manuscript has disappeared, but fortunately no fewer than 25 partial or complete logs or journals by other members of the expedition have survived. These supplement Vancouver's narrative at many points. It has been possible to identify virtually all the host of islands, channels and inlets that Vancouver encountered, and the provenance of most of the approximately 400 place names he bestowed, nine out of ten of which are still in use, is indicated. Remainder of Book 5, of a new and annotated edition of A Voyage of Discovery ... (London, 1798). The main pagination of this and the preceding three volumes is continuous. On the coast of North

Book excerpt: Canadian makeup and mixed media artist Lyle Reimer has nearly 125,000 Instagram followers who visit his account @Lylexox to experience the fantasy and undeniable creativity of his self-portrait personas, which fuse facial sculpture, makeup, and found objects, accompanied by hilarious fictional backstories. Lyle Reimer has captivated Instagram fans with his strangely beautiful self-portraits where his face serves as a blank canvas for decorative facial collages that bring his otherworldly online personas to life. His love of makeup, fashion, and storytelling is evident in his Instagram posts where he styles the makeup, wigs, and assembles his elaborate facial sculptures made up of found and recycled objects. Always pushing the boundaries of beauty, Reimer explores a multiplicity of characters à la Cindy Sherman, combined with the subversive edge of performance artist Leigh Bowery, and the glamorous theatrics of Moulin Rouge! In his debut book, designed by the renowned art director Fabien Baron, Reimer has curated a collection of his favorite Instagram personas. For Reimer's spectacular facial collages, inspiration comes from the most quotidian things--from feathers, soy sauce packets, Pellegrino water labels, bleached turkey bones, and mattress foam to ripped pages from Vogue and deconstructed Gucci purses--to create beautiful pieces of facial art. Truly a must-have for makeup and beauty aficionados and those interested in online popular culture, this one-of-a-kind volume captures Reimer's work as he breaks the boundaries of beauty, embraces self-expression, and celebrates the ever-changing nature of an individual's sense of style.
