Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait of a Pioneer When I first heard of Dr. Dean, three things im pressed me especially. His brave and colorful char acter; his magnificent work for the Manning; and the tragedy of his repudiation by a narrow-minded minority. Basing my story on these, I have attempted an outline of the life of one of Australia's most gifted pioneers, each maior episode being founded on fact, but colored, where necessary, by a poet's imagin ation, for I {realise that I am more of a poet than a novelist, as some of my advisers have so kindly pointed out. There are, therefore, a number of gaps in my narrative, while a number of imaginary charac ters mingle with the many who actually walked this earth in the shadow of the Colossus of the Manning. Certain unrecorded facts, indeed, have only reached me since the text went to press. Dr. Dean's adventurous life was even more exciting than I realised. He fought a duel, and changed his name, events which would have made my early chapters more stimulating had I known them sooner. In South Africa he bravely met the same official setbacks which later clouded his closing years on the Manning. However, to have dealt with these earlier misfortunes would have spoilt the balance of the book as I planned it. Again, certain lighter sides of the good Doctor's life escaped me. I am indebted, for instance, to a. Correspondent Who informs me that as an Editor Horace Dean was human enough to make an occa sional slip. As, when a meeting was held on a night so stormy that the Doctor was unable to attend. He knew the speakers and what they intended to say, so faithfully reported the meeting in the next issue of his newspaper. Unfortunately, the night was so wet that the meeting was cancelled. So the thoughtful Doctor reported a meeting that had never taken place! In forgiving such a human error, I hope that my readers will extend similar charity to my own shortcomings as a novelist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Pioneer It is with this end in view, to preserve the life of the old days in its many colors, that these recollections are penned. There was more to this life than has been touched by the parlor romancers or makers of moving-picture films. Per haps some day these memories may serve to illumine the historian delving in the human records of the past. And perhaps, also, and this is the author's dearest wish, they may inspire young readers to hold to the hardy traditions of the 'fifties and to keep this spirit alive in a country des tined soon to be densely peopled with newcomers from the long-settled parts of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Opinions of an Old Pioneer Since November, 1860, I had not further prosecuted my design until the month of March, 1878. In the month of December, 1877, a learned and distinguished historian, then and now engaged in writing a general history of the Pacific coast, called upon me, and kindly requested me to furnish him with such historical data as I possessed. Having already reduced to writing a considerable portion of my recollections and Opinions, I determined to finish the work I had undertaken, and to permit him to take a copy of all, or such portions as he might desire, for his use in preparing his own history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Pioneer Never again will the same primitive condi tions and circumstances be seen or re - enacted within the wide borders of these United States, for the wild grandeur of the scenes in this once vast desert plain has been destroyed. The quiet repose of beast and bird has been disturbed, or they have become extinct. The enterprise of man and the railroad have entered into all the wild places of the Great West, and opened them up to civilization. The buffalo and Indian no longer roam the plains; the stately elk and the fleet-footed antelope no longer make a living picture against the pale blue sky; nor does the heavy; freight wagon drawn by six yoke of oxen, or five span of mules, steer its way over the hills and prairies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Days The stories of early frontier life here pre sented, which are taken from the early his tories of the West and from lives of the frontiersmen and pioneers written by con temporaries and eye-witnesses, introduce the reader to an intimate acquaintance with the Indian races of the country which lies east of the Rocky Mountains. The savage warrior and hunter is presented, stripped of all the decorations with which writers of fiction have dressed him. He is seen in his ferocity and gentleness, in his rascality and nobility, in his boyhood, manhood and old age, and in his wis dom and ignognce. The accuracy and truth of these descriptions of the life and adventures of the period cannot be questioned, and they give us a vivid and inspiring picture of the con ditions under which part of our country was opened up for civilization. Here is a realism that may mar the lit erary attractiveness of the picture, but which greatly enhances its value as the material out of which true history must eventually be written. Mr. Douthit appears in these pages as a chronicler rather than as an historian. He has given us a collection of facts which, superficially studied, may seem trifling and sometimes grue some, but deeper study, will disclose their value as it will reveal high joys and noble convictions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Sketches: Scenes and Incidents of Former Days The object of this work is to give the reader life sketches of some of the early settlers of our country, scenes and incidents of former days, current topics, sparks of humor, gems of thought, etc., in which I have endeavored to give correct statements and dates from reliable sources, that the reader can refer to reminiscences of the past, we hope, with some degree of pleasure, knowing there is a Vast Field for the historian to chronicle events and incidents of the heroic pioneers of our great beneficent land of America. While the Heroes of the Dark Continent and the Missionary of India and other heathen lands enter into the work with unbounded zeal, to delineate to a finality the condition of the heathen race; "very well," but in the interim, let us not be unmindful of our own kin and kindred. We find there are many families in our land who cannot give a correct family history for two or three past generations, thus causing much annoyance and litigation, pertaining to estates, etc., and a living vacuum of a knowledge of the family pedigree. "Then let us hope others may write a book As well as some who have undertook In days of yore, that have gone by Along down the ages to you and I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colorado Pioneers in Picture and Story It has been my crrt to weave around a thread of history the legends, traditions and reminiscences Of the Pioneers, which accentuate the great phases in the development of Colorado, from its earliest history to the time it became a State in 1876. Ever since I journeyed into Denver in a Pullman car, in 1872 l have been interested in the people who blazed the way. I have listened to their tales Of how they won the West, and have found in the real incidents in the lives of real people a charm to which fiction can never attain. The labor of the Pioneers involved the highest type of moral as well as physical courage, and by placing their brave deeds in an historical setting I hope to preserve their intensely interesting human Side and Show how the isolated settlement, in a dreary desert, found its way into the sisterhood Of states. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Pioneer I was born in Bartow County, Georgia, on the 22md day of January, 1829. Sometime during my in fancy, and at a period too early to be remembered, my father and his family moved to East Tennessee, where we lived until I was ten years old. About this time re ports concerning the Platte Purchase and its splendid farming land began to reach us. I do not now recall the exact channel through which these reports came, but I think some of our relatives had gone there and had written back urging us to come. My father final ly yielded and in the spring of 1839 sold his Tennessee farm and prepared for the long journey overland. I was old enough at the time to take some note of what passed, and I remember that my father received four thousand dollars for his land in Indiana shin plas ters. I recall also the preparations that were made for the journey - the outfitting of the wagons, gathering the stock together, and most important of all, the part assigned to me. I was provided with a pony, saddle and bridle and given charge of a herd of loose cattle and horses. We had a rude camp outfit and car ried along with us all the household plunder with which we expected to start life in the new country. As may be well imagined, there was not a great deal of it, although the family was large. In those days the peo ple had to be satisfied with the barest necessities. Some idea of the extent of this part of my father's worldly property may be given by saying that the entire outfit, including camp equipment, was loaded into two wagons. I shall never forget the morning we started. Everything had been loaded the day before, ex cept the articles necessary to the sojourn over night. We were up bright and early, had breakfast in little better than camp style, and were off before sun up. My father, mother, and the younger children took the first wagon, and one of my brothers and my sisters the second. I was upon my pony and in my glory. The wagons moved forward and I rounded up the cattle and horses and forced them along after the wagons. I was too young to feel any tender sentiment toward the old home or to appreciate the fact that I was leav ing it forever, but I remember that my father and mother often looked back, and as we passed over the hill out of sight, I saw them turn and wave a long farewell. Many times since I have thought of that scene and have learned to know full well its meaning to my father and mother. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Picture of Pioneer Times in California: Illustrated With Anecdotes and Stories Taken From Real Life This book is respectfully dedicated to the boys and girls born on the Pacific Slope, of pioneer parents. Its object is to draw a correct and faithful picture of pioneer times in California, and thus expose the misstatements of itinerant lecturers and thoughtless or vicious writers, who seem to delight in wholesale misrepresentation of the habits and character of the first American settlers of this coast. The time has come when this matter should be discussed and set right; for the pioneers are fast passing away, and in a few short years not one will be left to contradict and expose the slanderous charges now constantly put forth against them. In the picture I have drawn, I have sought to avoid claiming for the pioneers one virtue not fairly theirs; nor have I attempted to conceal their errors. When speaking of individuals, I have tried to avoid undue praise or unjust censure. How far I have succeeded in making my picture a truthful representation, I leave my fellow pioneers to judge. The destinies of the great young States of the Pacific are fast passing into the hands of the children of the pioneers, and we, the parents, cheerfully resign our trust, feeling sure that the amor patriae with them is most heartfelt, and, burning brightly, will be "the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day" to guide them onward, and ensure a great future to the States of their birth. In resigning our leadership, it ought to be our ambition that our children should honor our memory, and feel proud that they are the children of California and Oregon pioneers. It is this ambition that has prompted the writing of this volume. It is directly addressed to our young people; but I hope it will be found attractive and interesting to every American citizen, and especially so to all our pioneers, who, day by day, as the shades of evening fall on their path, and their numbers lessen, grow nearer and nearer to each other, and more and more attached to all the recollections of the days when, as a band of brothers they, with cheerful hearts, faced every danger, side by side, and aroused into life this whole Pacific Coast. If my fellow pioneers find that I have performed the task I assigned myself but indifferently, I hope they will at least credit a good intention and an earnest endeavor to the author.
