Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Captive Sea, Daniel Hershenzon explores the entangled histories of Muslim and Christian captives—and, by extension, of the Spanish Empire, Ottoman Algiers, and Morocco—in the seventeenth century to argue that piracy, captivity, and redemption helped shape the Mediterranean as an integrated region at the social, political, and economic levels. Despite their confessional differences, the lives of captives and captors alike were connected in a political economy of ransom and communication networks shaped by Spanish, Ottoman, and Moroccan rulers; ecclesiastic institutions; Jewish, Muslim, and Christian intermediaries; and the captives themselves, as well as their kin. Hershenzon offers both a comprehensive analysis of competing projects for maritime dominance and a granular investigation of how individual lives were tragically upended by these agendas. He takes a close look at the tightly connected and ultimately failed attempts to ransom an Algerian Muslim girl sold into slavery in Livorno in 1608; the son of a Spanish marquis enslaved by pirates in Algiers and brought to Istanbul, where he converted to Islam; three Spanish Trinitarian friars detained in Algiers on the brink of their departure for Spain in the company of Christians they had redeemed; and a high-ranking Ottoman official from Alexandria, captured in 1613 by the Sicilian squadron of Spain. Examining the circulation of bodies, currency, and information in the contested Mediterranean, Hershenzon concludes that the practice of ransoming captives, a procedure meant to separate Christians from Muslims, had the unintended consequence of tightly binding Iberia to the Maghrib.

Drawing on library catalogues, specialist bibliographies and studies, as well as auction catalogue records, Iberian Books lists 45,000 items, and the locations of some 215,000 copies surviving in 1,800 collections worldwide. These volumes offer a powerful research tool which will appeal to researchers, librarians and to the book selling and collecting communities. They will prove invaluable to anyone with a research interest in the literature, history and culture of the Iberian Peninsula in the early modern age. This set supplements Iberian Books, which logs the Iberian print production up to 1601.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the royal chapel established by Philip II in Madrid, the essays in this richly illustrated volume offer a series of different perspectives on the development of the main court chapels of Europe. English version edited by Tess Knighton The royal chapel, in Europe as a whole and in Spain in particular, was a cultural institution where court ceremonial, politics, music and the arts were brought together in terms of space and function. The ramifications for the patronage and cultivation of the arts and the dynamic between music and the arts and the concept of kingship form the focus of the text. The phenomenon of groupings of singers, chaplainsand musicians at the service of the different European monarchies is of great significance both for the history of music, and the political and cultural history of the court in general. The royal chapel established by Philip II in Madrid was the central religious and musical institution of royal power until well into the eighteenth century, and using this as a focus, the essays in this richly illustrated volume offer a series of different perspectives onthe development of the main court chapels of Europe. These papers were delivered at the international seminar, 'La Real Capilla de Palacio en la época de los Austrias', under the auspices of the Fundación Carlos de Amberes,Madrid from 14 to 16 December, 2000. The volume is edited by Tess Knighton, Juan José Carreras and Bernardo García García, and translated by Yolanda Acker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miguel de Cervantes is probably the greatest writer of the Spanish Golden Age, whose influence on the Spanish language has been profound. Readers who know Cervantes only as the author of Don Quijote will be surprised and delighted by what they find in the Novelas ejemplares, published in 1613 and whose composition spanned a decade and more preceding their publication. Don Quijote may be the most celebrated novel in western literature, but the Novelas ejemplares are among its most unjustly neglected masterpieces. They consist of twelve long short stories or short novels, each quite unlike the others. The geographical contrast alone could not be sharper, with settings ranging from the Aegean to the Caribbean and from Britain to North Africa. The stories teem with characters drawn from an equally broad social spectrum, from the new, affluent nobility to self-made merchants, feisty women, confidence tricksters, criminals and excluded minorities. Scarcely a contemporary conflict goes unreferenced, scarcely an important European town or city goes unvisited, while many, especially in Spain, play a major role in the economic, social and political context of the stories. Furthermore none of the major fictional genres of Cervantes's time is missing from the rich mix of literary allusion designed to appeal to a well-read, metropolitan audience. The Novelas ejemplares are a narrative tour de force, an exhibition of sophisticated story-telling, daringly original in concept, executed with subtlety and imagination, wide-ranging, entertaining and amusing, to be read for pleasure as well as profit. Taken together, they provide an overview of many of Cervantes's recurring themes - the complexity of human nature and the unpredictability of human behaviour. They provide a series of working models of what happens when people are put under extreme pressure, all viewed from Cervantes's typically ironic standpoint. A modern English translation was not available until the original appearance of the versions that follow, in four volumes, in 1992. Now for the first time all twelve stories are collected in one volume. For the second fully updated edition Barry Ife's authoritative General Introduction has been re-written and more of the important original preliminaries have been edited and translated so that the reader has a greater sense of the context of the 1613 publication. Specifically these are the four aprobaciones the work received and Cervantes's dedication to the Count of Lemos, both translated into English for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of March 18, 1655, two Spanish friars broke into a church to steal the bones of the founder of their religious institution, the Order of the Most Holy Trinity. This book investigates this little-known incident of relic theft and the lengthy legal case that followed, together with the larger questions that surround the remains of saints in seventeenth-century Catholic Europe. Drawing on a wealth of manuscript and print sources from the era, A. Katie Harris uses the case of St. John of Matha’s stolen remains to explore the roles played by saints’ relics, the anxieties invested in them, their cultural meanings, and the changing modes of thought with which early modern Catholics approached them. While in theory a relic’s authenticity and identity might be proved by supernatural evidence, in practice early modern Church authorities often reached for proofs grounded in the material, human world—preferences that were representative of the standardizing and streamlining of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century saint-making. Harris examines how Matha’s advocates deployed material and documentary proofs, locating them within a framework of Scholastic concepts of individuation, identity, change, and persistence, and applying moral certainty to accommodate the inherent uncertainty of human evidence and relic knowledge. Engaging and accessible, The Stolen Bones of St. John of Matha raises an array of important questions surrounding relic identity and authenticity in seventeenth-century Europe. It will be of interest to students, scholars, and casual readers interested in European history, religious history, material culture, and Renaissance studies.

Yet, along the coasts, Spanish farmers and fishermen lived in constant fear, the victims of regular kidnapping raids by North African corsairs. In this detailed study, Ellen G. Friedman examines this undeclared state of siege that would continue for two hundred years and perpetuate the centuries-old struggle of Christianity and Islam. Drawing on original archival sources, anecdotal materials, and computer analysis, she vividly documents the North African dependence on Spanish hostages, the experiences of Christian captives, and the officially-sanctioned efforts to free them. The result is a fresh perspective on Spain in its Golden Age, and a seminal study of European slaves in Africa.
