Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) encompasses seven countries of a large landmass containing one-fifth of the total global population. After the formation of SAARC in August 1980, several publications have been brought out by many organisations, which by and large deal with issues like economy, politics, administration and so on. This book comprises three articles, besides an introductory note by the editors and an epilogue on the important issues related to the bio-cultural relations-is the first of its kind. The book discusses, in depth, the biological and cultural affinities/linkages of the populations of these countries. While the biological affinities of the populations in respect of these countries have been traced back from the pre-historic to the contemporary period, the cultural linkages, with special reference to trade, religion, art, architecture and so on have been documented from the ancient to the medieval historical period of the region.

Book excerpt: This research study deals with health status of older persons living in countries of the SAARC region (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) such as India, Pakistan, Srilanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Maldives. The emerging changes in the age and sex structure of India's population, particularly at old and older ages will have a profound impact on the demographic landscape and are expected to pose multifaceted developmental challenges. While the knowledge base with regard to the elderly in terms of their demographic, social and economic conditions, health needs and their living arrangements are fairly extensive in SAARC countries, it is woefully inadequate in India. This research study mainly focuses on socio-economic status, work participation and benefits, income and asset holding, living arrangement patterns and familial relations, health status, utilisation and financing of health care, and reach and awareness of social security schemes among the elderly in SAARC countries. The rate of population increase of the elderly in SAARC Countries is more than the overall population growth rate. The resulting ever increasing size of older people are likely to raise demands for several specific social services including medical facilities, financial support, family care and improved public infrastructure.

Book excerpt: The Birth Of South Asian Association For Regional Cooperation (Saarc) In 1985 Marked A New Beginning For The Seven South Asian Countries India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka And Maldives. For The First Time, These Countries Made And Institutionalized Effort To Forge Multilateral Cooperation Among Them. But, Even After Twenty Years Of Existence Of The Saarc, The Leaders Of The South Asian Countries Are Usually Much More Comfortable In Dealing With The Countries Outside The Region Than They Are With Themselves, And The Past For Them Remains The Present. Therefore, The First Twenty Years Experience Of This Regional Organization Can Hardly Put Saarc In The Sane Category Of The European Union(Eu) Or Even In That Of Association Of South Asian Nations(Asean). While The Latest Phase Of Globalization Must Have Forced The Leaders Of The Saarc Countries To Rethink Their Relationship Vis-A-Vis One Another And To Work For A Free Trade In South Asia, But The Turbulent Years Are Yet To Be Left Behind. But Why Could Not Saarc Succeed When Many Other Regional Organization Are Reaching New High And Who Were At Fault? This Book Is Humble Attempt To Find Probable Answers To These Serious Questions That Have Been Bothering The People Of South Asia For Quite Some Times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book excerpt: This book acquaints the reader with the critical changes in India’s economy and society amidst the unprecedented pandemic outbreak of COVID-19, which has been devastating by breaking all prior records of illness and fatality. The present crisis is shown to be more than an acute health hazard as it carries with it other threats associated with the economy, society, culture, psychology, and politics. The dynamic driving forces that have a significant bearing on life, space, and time are explored, providing a basis on which social scientists can understand the prevailing equations and project the unforeseen future to contribute to a policymaking mechanism. The Indian scenario presented here takes into account how the COVID-19-induced lockdown of transport services, closing of factories, and restrictions on mobilization have caused the economy to face a recession, affecting mostly the unorganized sector. Travel restrictions and quarantines affecting hundreds of millions of people have left Indian factories short of labour, causing havoc in the production system. Semi-skilled jobholders have lost their employment, and the country has witnessed the plight of large pools of migrant labourers returning on foot to their homelands hundreds of miles away with their families and belongings. Contributors to this volume are drawn from diverse disciplines, displaying the solidarity of academic knowledge in a physically divided world. This common platform is provided to the practitioners of relevant academic disciplines under the umbrella of regional sciences – a forum for the exchange of ideas that may be effective in the sustainable management of the crisis and a way forward after it is mitigated. Thought-provoking discussions regarding different facets of the crisis are relevant not only to the current times but also to being prepared for the unforeseen post-COVID economic and societal order.

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced countries around the globe into lockdown, imposing trade and travel restrictions with devastating economic impacts on all sectors of the economy. In working toward greater economic stability, Australia has been strengthening its trade relations with other countries, which is reflected through its increased strategic relations with India. However, it is now essential to explore how Australia is working to further expand its collaboration with other South Asian countries and find new markets and opportunities for trade, investment, tourism, international education, and business dealings for its resources, services, manufacturing, and technology sectors. Strategic Cooperation and Partnerships Between Australia and South Asia: Economic Development, Trade, and Investment Opportunities Post COVID-19 provides an overview of the Australian trade and investment relationship with South Asian countries and identifies the trends and developments of bilateral trade agreements in strategic areas of trade, tourism, investment, education, prior and post COVID-19. Covering topics such as international trade, climate change policy, and macroeconomics, it is ideal for policymakers, practitioners, industry professionals, government officials, academicians, researchers, instructors, and students.
