The country has a population of about 11 million people, with over 60 tribes, the largest of which are the Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk. The official languages are English and Arabic, but there are over 60 indigenous languages spoken throughout the country. South Sudan faces significant challenges, including civil war, poverty, and underdevelopment. The country has experienced conflict and instability since gaining independence, with ongoing ethnic tensions and disputes over resources. The majority of the population lives in poverty, with limited access to basic services such as healthcare and education. Despite these challenges, South Sudan has a rich cultural heritage and is home to diverse ethnic groups, languages, and traditional customs. Efforts are being made to develop the country's infrastructure and economy, but progress has been slow due to ongoing conflict and political instability.

The 3-Year SEP is an emergency plan to deal with the adjustment to new political and economic realities following the decision of the South to secede. I-PRSP will also help to fine tune the preparation and implementation of the SEP and a new 5-year Plan, and provide a foundation for the full PRSP.

Book excerpt: This Joint Staff Advisory Note focuses on the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (I-PRSP) for Sudan. I-PRSP provides a useful stock taking of the socioeconomic situation in Sudan and offers a good basis for the design and monitoring of growth and poverty reduction policies. It is the first comprehensive policy document that assesses the challenges of and opportunities for poverty reduction. This strategy lays out a clear policy approach for the Government of Sudan to accelerate poverty reduction and provides a foundation for a roadmap to a full PRSP, but timelines and concrete next steps need to be urgently defined.

Large numbers of population in the state, high spending on food items in the rural and urban areas in Khartoum state with under nutrition. People with low income included government employees. Low-income people who fell below poverty line were in rural Khartoum areas. Inequity in income distribution concentrated in the state, especially in Khartoum north areas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the 2007–2009 financial and economic crises, there has been an unprecedented demand among economics students for an alternative approach, which offers a historical, institutional and multidisciplinary treatment of the discipline. Economic development lends itself ideally to meet this demand, yet most undergraduate textbooks do not reflect this. This book will fill this gap, presenting all the core material needed to teach development economics in a one semester course, while also addressing the need for a new economics and offering flexibility to instructors. Rather than taking the typical approach of organizing by topic, the book uses theories and debates to guide its structure. This will allow students to see different perspectives on key development questions, and therefore to understand more fully the contested nature of many key areas of development economics. The book can be used as a standalone textbook on development economics, or to accompany a more traditional text.
