Between the two states, six priests and eight churches ministered to a few hundred Catholics. In the following years, Bacon founded 63 churches, ordained 52 priests, built 23 schools, and attended to a Catholic population of about 80,000. In 1884, New Hampshire became an independent diocese. By 1903, founding bishop Denis Bradley introduced over 30 missions; parishes; schools, including Saint Anselm College; and charitable services. Since its inception in 1884, ten bishops selected from New Hampshire and other states have honored the Diocese of Manchester with their leadership. Throughout most of the 20th century, New Hampshire experienced growth in vocations and education. Starting in the 1970s, there was a decline of parochial students, vocations, and sacramental reception. Today, over 250,000 Catholics worship in the Granite State within 89 parishes.

In 1759, it was named Wolfeboro in honor of Battle of Quebec hero Gen. James Wolfe, and on August 1, 1770, King George II granted the township to the settlers. Bordered by the Lamprey River, the town is known for its mill buildings, which essentially make up the architectural backbone and industrial fabric of the downtown area. The earliest settlers took to fishing, lumbering, and shipbuilding on the banks of the Lamprey as their principal means of income and survival; the mills would later provide the town with economic stability through textile- and shoe-manufacturing enterprises. The town also boasted the largest single-room weave shed in the world at the height of its industrial textile boom. Today, Newmarket is a noted settlement, home to both longtime residents as well as college students and faculty who commute nearby to the University of New Hampshire. Locals treasure the Stone Church Meeting House, a music venue established in 1969 within the stone walls of a once prominent Universalist church that was built at the top of famed Zion Hill in 1832. The town has been revitalized in recent years by the equally historic renovations of the downtown mill buildings, which now host a myriad of units, from residential to commercial properties.
