Book excerpt: The onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a worldwide pest of onions and other crops. In New York it is an annual threat to the commercial onion industry where populations are managed with regular applications of insecticides. Two peaks of flight activity occurred during the period when T. tabaci infest onions in New York. These flights were composed of both female and males of this species, as well as a smaller number of other species. On-plant populations consisted of both female and male T. tabaci but no other species of thrips. Numbers of thrips on onion plants increased steadily through the growing season, exceeding the economic threshold of three thrips per leaf by mid to late summer in most fields. During the period of population increase, and especially during peaks of flight activity, airborne thrips were captured in equal numbers on traps placed throughout onion fields. Peaks of flight activity and proportions of T. tabaci of all thrips captured in onions did not correspond with peaks, harvest or ratio of thrips captured in neighboring field and forage crops, although T. tabaci was found to be a dominant species in areas outside onion fields. Sexually reproducing strains of T. tabaci were collected from onion fields. These were found to be highly resistant to pyrethroids, including l -cyhalothrin. By contrast, T. tabaci collected in areas adjacent to onions, such as alfalfa fields, reproduced asexually and had low resistance to l -cyhalothrin. It was concluded that neighboring field and forage crops are not the most significant source of T. tabaci that invade onion fields each year and become hard to manage in New York. High levels of insecticide resistance indicate that a resistance management plan and the promotion of integrated pest management in New York's onion industry should be high priorities in the near future.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early season thrips damage to cotton can reduce yield and kill plant terminals. Control measures and the compounds used to control thrips vary widely. Thrips species, such as onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindman and western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), are major contributors to the agricultural crop pest spectrum on numerous crops. The persistence of these two species as crop pests has led to the delineation of species-specific tactics for insecticidal control measures. The primary objective of this research was to characterize and compare attributes of five insecticides in different classes: anthranilic diamide (352-DPX), microcyclic lactone (spinosad, Tracer® 4 SC), neonicotinoid (thiomethoxam, Cruiser® 40 WG), carbamate (oxamyl, Vydate® L) and organophosphate (acephate, Orthene® 90 S) with thrips activity. Insecticidal potency, feeding/oviposition preference, reproductive effects and feeding damage were studied on T. tabaci and F. occidentalis . Adult potency data (LC50 or dose response mortality of each compound) showed that all compounds were more potent on T. tabaci than F. occidentalis . 352-DPX was 3823X less potent on F. occidentalis, followed by Orthene (411X), Vydate L (11X), and Tracer and Centric both with 6X lower potency on F. occidentalis . Results from the feeding and oviposition preference and reproductive effects bioassay indicated that adult T. tabaci and F. occidentalis tended to be equally distributed between treated and untreated leaves. Some exceptions are discussed where significantly more adults thrips were found on the untreated than treated leaves. The feeding and oviposition preference results indicate that in spite of the significantly lower potency on F. occidentalis, leaves treated with all compounds were less preferred over untreated leaves for feeding and oviposition, resulting in significantly lower larvae and feeding damage. Interestingly, only 352-DPX, Tracer and Vydate had this same effect on T. tabaci . Additional results indicate that sublethal concentrations (e.g. LC10 and LC50) had an effect on feeding and progeny reduction. Finally, treated leaves resulted in lower percent plant damage, caused feeding cessation, and subsequently influenced larval populations. An improved population assessment for thrips management and plant protection was developed based on these findings.

Book excerpt: Sucking pests are most notorious group of pests for agricultural crops. Unlike most pests with chewing mouth parts, sucking pests cause more severe damage to the crops and are complex to get identified until advanced stages of infection. Not only is this late detection detrimental to their effective control, sucking pests also often cause fungal growth and virus transmission. The book emphasizes on sucking pests of most major crops of India. It aims to reflect Indian scenario before the international readership. This book complies comprehensive information on sucking pests of crops and brings the attention of the readers to this multiple damage causing insect complex. The chapters are contributed by highly experienced Indigenous experts from Universities & ICAR institutes, and book collates useful content for students and young researchers in plant pathology, entomology and agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a reference to biological control of arthropod pests in agriculture and of public health importance in Iran. A quick glance over the literature shows a long history of biocontrol attempts in the country. Some historically important events highlighting the interest of Iranian academic, research and extension fields to the natural enemies and their applied aspects are provided. Iran, with an exception of the former USSR, was a pioneer in both basic and applied biocontrol in West Asia. The book consists of four parts: three parts for predators, parasitoids and pathogens, and last part for other approaches and analyses of the current state of biological control in Iran. The book provides the most up-to-date information on pest control and related topics of entomology in Iran. The chapters are written by scholars from major Universities and research centers in Iran.

Book excerpt: This book comprehensively compiles information on some of the major pests that afflict agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops in particular as well as many polyphagous pests. Not only does this book deal with the pests of common globally produced crops it also addresses those of rarely dealt with crops such as seed spices, medicinal and aromatic plants. While the perspective of insect pests is largely Indian and South East Asian in context, the book does deal with globally problematic pests, particularly polyphagous ones. Not only will the readers be acquainted with the pests, their damaging potential and their life cycle but also with the latest methods of managements including ecofriendly measures being employed to keep pest populations at manageable levels. The 27 chapters in the book, are grouped into four sections primarily based on crop types, viz. pest of agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops, and polyphagous pests, making the book easy to navigate. Each of the chapters is comprehensive and well illustrated and written by academicians who have dedicated their entire lives to the study of a particular crop-pest complex. The final chapter of this book provides an overview on the principles and processes of pest management.
