Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no fourth wall in popular performance. The show is firmly rooted in the here and now, and the performers address the audience directly, while the audience answer back with laughter, applause or heckling. Performer and role are interlaced, so that we are left uncertain about just how the persona we see onstage might relate to the private person who presents it to us. Popular Performance defines and surveys varieties of performance where the main purpose is to entertain, and where there is no shame in being trivial, frivolous or nonsensical as long as people go home happy at the end of the show. Contributions by new and established scholars focus particularly on how it is made, explaining the techniques of performance and production that make it so appealing to audiences. With sections examining how popular performance works in a range of historical and contemporary examples, readers will gain insights into: * performance forms associated with the variety tradition: music hall, vaudeville, cabaret, variety * performance forms associated with circus: wild west shows, clowning * issues relating to the identity of the performer in relation to magic, burlesque, pantomime in contemporary performance * issues relating to venue and audience in relation to contemporary street theatre, stand-up, and live sketch comedy.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Title I of the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA) of 1994 provides funds for schools with large concentrations of children from low-income families. A fundamental requirement is that children served by Title I funds must be educated according to the same academic standards as all other students. This handbook focuses on methods for developing performance standards in the aligned system of standards and assessments required by IASA Title I. The handbook aims to capture the best of current practice, without relying solely on the published literature, by drawing on the experiences of educators and recent research. The first section (chapters 1-4) defines performance standards in the context of an aligned education system and provides advice for developing a system of performance standards. Chapters introduce the idea of performance standards as a system, provide background about Title I legislation, and define terms related to performance standards. The second section (chapters 5-8) contains several state stories about initiating and developing performance standards and standards-based assessment programs. Chapters focus on Colorado, Maryland, Oregon, and Wyoming. The third section (chapters 9-10) contains the work of nationally recognized researchers in the field of assessment. Chapter 9, "Creating Descriptions of Desired Student Achievement When Setting Performance Standards" by Craig N. Mills and Richard M. Jaeger, describes a method for developing performance standards. Chapter 10, "Setting Performance Standards on Achievement Tests: Meeting the Requirements of Title I" by Ronald K. Hambleton, synthesizes research related to cutting scores. Most chapters contain references. Four appendixes present the instruments. (Contains 16 figures and 4 tables.) (SLD)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication was awarded the Jacqueline Ross TOEFL Dissertation Award in 2009. Since its publication in 2001, the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) has been the most frequently-cited performance standard in language testing in Europe. To help test providers and users with score interpretation in relation to the CEFR levels, the Council of Europe published the 'Manual for relating language examinations to the CEFR'. Even though the linking process set out in the Manual is primarily based on judgements by trained participants, judgement-making in this context remains largely unexplored. The research presented in this book addresses this issue by employing quantitative and qualitative methods. Despite the judges' good understanding of how language ability progresses from lower to higher CEFR levels, it was found that describing test content and examinee performance was not without problems and decision-making was affected by a number of factors that were irrelevant to the judgement task. The results provide a better understanding of judgement-making during the CEFR linking process, which has important implications for examination providers and users of CEFR-aligned test scores.
