Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History for Young People Although the number of works on Natural History might deter any new writer from venturing on so extensively handled a subject, there is at present no work of a really popular character in which accuracy of information and system atic arrangement are united with brevity and simplicity of treatment. All the best-known popular works on Natural History are liable to many obice tions, among which may be named a want of correct classification, the absence of explanations of the meanings and derivations of scientific words, the strange inaccuracy of many of the accompanying illustrations, and of the accounts of many animals. Nor do the conventional anecdotes chronicled in their pages evince that personal experience of the animal race which alone can repress romance and prevent inaccuracy. These deficiencies, it is hoped, are at all events partly sup plied in the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Life in the Sea and on the Land: A Zoology for Young People This book is offered to young people with the hope that it may help them in their studies of natural history. The pleasure of every ramble in the country or by the sea side is increased by an acquaintance with the animals and plants which are found by the way, and consequently these studies bring their own reward. It is far more charming to gain this knowledge from the objects themselves than from merely reading about them in books; and it is therefore hoped that each subject which is treated in these pages will be studied from Speci mens actually in hand, whenever it is possible to obtain them. The habit of collecting natural objects and curiosities is a helpful one; and if young students are careful to find out all they can about these objects, the collection Will in time represent an unexpected amount of positive knowl edge. The aim has been to make this little book accurate, and to bring it up to the present condition of science; at the same time scientific terms have been avoided when others could be substituted for them. Classification has not been made prominent, yet the arrangement of Nicholson has been adhered to throughout. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Burgess Animal Book for Children The cordial reception given the Burgess Bird Book for Children, together with numerous letters to the author asking for information on the habits and characteristics of many of the mammals of America, led to the preparation of this volume. It is offered merely as an introduction to the four-footed friends, little and big, which form so important a part of the wild life of the United States and Canada. There has been no attempt to describe or classify sub-species. That is for the scientist and student with specific interests. The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with the larger groups - orders, families, and divisions of the latter, so that typical representatives may readily be recognized and their habits understood. Instead of the word mammal the word animal has been used throughout as having a better defined meaning to the average child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of Animals The study of Nature is the basis of Religion; and in the primitive ages of the world, previous to the epoch of revelation, mankind had no other guide to direct them to a knowledge of the existence and attributes of the Deity, than the contemplation of his works. These, indeed, exhibited such evident proofs of his power, his wisdom, and his goodness, as were sufficient to convince rational creatures, that a self-existent and infinite Being was the source and origin of all existence. This St. Paul so well understood, that he condemns the Gentiles, because, after having recognised the Supreme Being in the works of the creation, they neglected to worship him, and considers them as inexcus able; Because, says he, the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Natural History: A Foundation of Useful Knowledge of the Higher Animals of North America The foregoing is for the eyes of adult readers. Argument is not necessary to con vince young people that a mighty host of interesting things awaits every one who sets foot in the field of Nature. To - day, the all-absorbing question is - how can Nature be made available to the young? This book is one of my two answers to that question; and it is particularly addressed to teachers and parents. It is intended to be a plain, practical, common - sense answer, presented in a systematic and scientific way. The author assumes that fifteen years of earnest thought, and conferences with scores of teachers on the subject of natural history teaching in American public schools, may fairly entitle him to a hearing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History: Or, Uncle Philip's Conversations With the Children About Tools and Trades Among Inferior Animals In conclusion, the author owes it to himself to say to the parents of his young countrymen, and to the patrons of the Boy's and Girl's Library, that what he has written will be found on the side of religion and morals. So far as these important points are concerned, the writer is not ashamed to avow himself a Christian; nor yet does he mean to make it the subject of boasting. In his simple view, Christianity is a very quiet and gentle thing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Animals, Vol. 1: The Animal Life of the World in Its Various Aspects and Relations The Introduction fully explains the plan of the work, and the lines which have been adopted in writing it, and books to which the Author is specially indebted are either mentioned in the text, or included in a special list at the end. It is both mentally and physically impossible for one zoologist to know at first hand more than a small part of his subject, and for this reason full quotations, in preference to mere paraphrases, have been taken from the writings of many distinguished specialists, the sources in such cases being always indicated.
