Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Evidences of Natural Religion and Christianity The firll part of this Treatil'e was ready for the prefs, and {hould have been publilhed early in 1801. The reafon why this intention was not executed, it is not interefiing to the publick to know. But if this publication had taken place at the time in tended, it would have laved me now another apology for' prefuming to bring forward this work, after that molt excellent performance of Dr. Paley's Elements of Natural Theology. One part of my apology is a candid and honeit acknowledgment, that it is a painful effort for an author to fupprefs a work, on which he has bellowed confiderable time and attention; and on which he has alfo let his heart. And to this, I have to add, that though Dr. Paley's work be direeted to the fame end, yet this, in no one part, interferes with it. This only wifhes to be regarded as a humble aflifiant, co-operating and bringing up fome additional materials to fupport the fame important fortrefs. They are nearly al lied in title: they accord altogether in dehga; but the plans are totally difl'erent, and the materials are no where the fame. Befides the Elements is a logical treatife, requiring confiderable knowledge to underfland, and Ready attention in reading, to reap from it real benefit. This is loofe and more defultory, fitted for readers of lefs knowledge, and who have it not in their power to bellow luch clofe attention. Christian Evidences We do not mean, of course, to assert that it is improper to develop one or another line of evidence to the exclusion, for the time, of other lines. This is often most desirable. We think, however, it is un fortunate to attempt to discredit any of the well established forms of the argument for Christianity merely because some particular form happens for the moment to be unpopular. In the end more is lost than is gained by the procedure. The attempt is made in the succeeding pages to state the argument for Christian belief from the four leading standpoints. The aim has been to put the case as clearly and with as little of the formal and technical in language and style as the nature of the subject would admit. It will be found to contain valuable disquisitions as to the state of the question, and the precise bearing and argumentative value of the various topics discussed in such works. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion in Its Doctrinal Expression Several reasons have led the writer to prepare the present work on theology. He has been a teacher of the subject during the past eighteen years. His own method and standpoint in dealing with truth have, as a natural consequence, taken definite form. Theology is like any other science in the fact that if it is alive, it grows. This does not mean that it goes beyond Christ and the New Testament. It means, rather, that these are provocative of endless growth. The object of religion does not grow, but the subject never attains a final and static stage in the present life. Truth does not change, but we apprehend truth with increasing clearness. Down to the middle of the nineteenth century, after Luther's age, theology was engaged chiefly with the issues growing out of the Reformation. The method of theology was that derived from a past age. Theologies were comprehensive, more or less philosophical and abstract treatises. There was a very commendable desire to systematize the truths of Christianity. But too often the biblical method and aim were sacrificed in the interest of a "school" of theology or a philosophical principle. For example, Arminianism overlooked certain essential truths about God in its strong championship of human freedom. As against it, Calvinism ran to extremes in some of its conclusions in its very earnest desire to safeguard the truth of God's sovereignty. We are learning to discard both names and to adhere more closely than either to the Scriptures, while retaining the truth in both systems. During the nineteenth century the whole world of human thought underwent a remarkable revolution. In physical science a new method and ideal arose. In the social and economic sphere a new sociology and political economy took shape. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scripture and Its Witnesses: Outlines of Christian Evidence In recent years the study has assumed a more systematic form and taken a more independent position, being treated as a distinct branch of theology and baptized with the name of Apolo getics. The name alone is new, the subject is as old as the Church itself. Dr. Bruce has well pointed out that the Epistle to the Hebrews is of the nature of an apology. The writer of that Epistle was the first in a line of apologists extending to the present day. The second century is distinguished by a school of writers known as the Greek Apologists, who made it their mission to expound the grounds of the Christian faith to the educated classes of the age. The series includes Justin Martyr (about 150 ad), Quadratus, Aristides, Tatian, Melito (170 Miltiades, Athena goras, Theophilus (180 Many of their works are extant. They are addressed some to the emperor of the day, some to the general public. Many of the arguments used have a modern ring - evidences of design in nature, miracles and prophecy, the adaptation of the gospel to human nature and need. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity the Religion of Nature: Lectures Delivered Before the Lowell Institute The author by no means claims as original the conception of Christianity as coincident with the religion of nature; but he is not aware that precisely this line of proof or defence has been adopted in any formal treatise on the evidences of Christianity. Yet he is profoundly convinced that it is on grounds of a priori probability that the controversy between those who admit and those who deny a special, authoritative revelation through Jesus Christ is now to be waged. It is not a little singular that a priori objections took precedence of historical in the early days of the Church. We have no reason to suppose that Celsus denied the miraculous element in the Evangelical narratives. In times of ready faith as to the occult and marvellous in nature and the wonder-working power of demons, it was easy to admit the salient facts recorded in the Gospels, and yet to reject the truths which they seemed to authenticate. The two leading considerations urged by Celsus against the new religion were its promulgation among and for the poor, uneducated, and ignoble, and its claim to universality, both which features appeared to him so intrinsically absurd as to be incapable of proof.
