Indeed, church weddings have strayed long and far from distinctly Christian aspirations. The costumes and gestures might still be right, but the intentions are hardly religious. These actions would bring true life to your statement, ‘Who am I to judge?’” In 2015, the United States Supreme Court struck down bans on same-sex marriage in Obergell v. Hodges and in 2020, the United States Supreme Court expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite these landmark achievements in the public sector, LGBTQ Catholics still cannot receive communion and must always seek reconciliation. Their flourishing as part of their religious community is always frustrated. Brenkert’s account of his life before, in, and after the Jesuits is interwoven with trials and tribulations, but remains always full of hope, written candidly and with bracing honesty. Brenkert offers readers the opportunity to join him on a theological and spiritual pilgrimage, one that ends with readers making a discernment. The author asks two questions: Does the Pope’s endorsement of same-sex unions signify a change in the Catholic Church’s teaching on marriage and homosexuality? What has Pope Francis said about same-sex unions in the past? Surprisingly, the answers to both questions are fairly straightforward. Marriage is still a covenant between a man and a woman — a relationship which is open to the generation of new life. Same-sex partnerships or unions cannot be put in the same basket. The Pope suggests instead, the legal recognition of what he calls "Convivencia civil" picked up and translated as "civil union" by the Press. The recent papal opinions are complicated by translational challenges from Spanish to English and redaction from the unedited footage and text of the Mexican outlet Televisa to Evgeny Afineevsky’s redaction of the Russian-born film director, producer and cinematographer who lives in the United States. The Pope's view is neither new nor contradictory to the perennial teaching of the Catholic. The shift is in pastoral approach to ensure the non-marginalisation of homosexual families. Pope Francis expressed the same view in 2010 when Argentina was debating same-sex marriage which he opposed. Instead, he suggested what is generally known as same-sex unions which guarantees the rights of gay people but does rise to the same doctrinal, sacramental or canonical status as the traditional heterosexual marriage between a man and a woman, freely entered into and open to the generation of new life.

Mexico City has approved the Cohabitation Law, which grants same-sex couples marital rights identical to those of common-law relationships between men and women. Yet, a gay man was murdered every two days in Latin America in 2005, and Brazil recently led the world in homophobic murders. These facts illustrate the wide disparity in the treatment and rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations across the region. The Politics of Sexuality in Latin America presents the first English-language reader on LGBT politics in Latin America. Representing a range of contemporary works by scholars, activists, analysts, and politicians, the chapters address LGBT issues in nations from Cuba to Argentina. In their many findings, two main themes emerge: the struggle for LGBT rights has made significant inroads in the first decade of the twenty-first century (though not in every domain or every region); and the advances made were slow in coming compared to other social movements. The articles uncover the many obstacles that LGBT activists face in establishing new laws and breaking down societal barriers. They identify perhaps the greatest roadblock in Latin American culture as an omnipresent system of “heteronormativity,” wherein heterosexuality, patriarchalism, gender hierarchies, and economic structures are deeply rooted in nearly every level of society. Along these lines, the texts explore specific impediments including family dependence, lack of public spaces, job opportunities, religious dictums, personal security, the complicated relationship between leftist political parties and LGBT movements in the region, and the ever-present “closets,” which keep LGBT issues out of the public eye.
