Book excerpt: Poojamma starts with Nina, an American journalist receiving news of the death of Poojamma. As she travels to India, she has many dreams of her relationships with Poojamma. The story begins to unfold. Poojamma is a social reformer of sorts who lives in a village among Dalits in Karnataka, India. She brings unity among different castes. She becomes very popular among poor people. Her popularity sends jitters in the raw nerves of politicians who decide to fight Poojamma. Intermittent battle between her and political forces follow. Poojamma is assassinated in a dastardly bomb blast. Kala, the prodigy of Poojamma, narrates half the story to Nina. Nina takes it upon herself to make the government of India to order an official investigation into the murder. Finally, when courts are ready to hand out a death sentence to the culprits, Kala stands on the way against death sentence. The author’s spicy writing style leaves only a thin line between fiction and true story. Indeed the novel is based on many true incidents with fictional flavor. The personality of Poojamma is a heady mix of fictional and real-life characters. A roller coaster of fictional intricacies awaits readers.

Book excerpt: Anna Savay, a New York painter, gets an opportunity that most artists dream about: a one-man show in New York City, a rich sponsor willing to spare no expense to promote her talent, and a NY gallery owner who wants to marry her. What can go wrong? Astonishingly, Anna disappears on the night of her show's opening gala, leaving a bloody trail that links her to murder, shady business deals, and broken hearts. Her survival depends on her own strength and the trust and support of her family and friends, including a well-loved but formidable island police chief, a distracted musician, an art restorer sister who is devoted to Anna' happiness, and a jaded sailor with a hidden agenda. The setting of the action-filled plot spans from New York City through the snowy mountains of upstate New York to the tropical Caribbean islands. The question is: Will Anna survive the intrigue and life-threatening adventures that the “opportunity of a lifetime” brings her way?

Book excerpt: Those of us who have always lived in America speak of the economic crashes our country has experienced and survived. However, we have never experienced genuine economic collapse, or the terrifying reality of a country where central banking and inflation have led to anarchy. Author Svetoslav Elenkov gives a uniquely valuable first-hand account of life in a country torn apart by economic disaster, and shows the connections between money, central banking, inflation, and the real impact on everyday people of corrupt and short-sighted government policies. Experience what it is like to live in a world where violence erupts as protests are ignored; where the powerful send men armed with shields and batons to assault citizens innocently celebrating at a party. Immerse yourself in a world where government buildings are attacked, where AK-47s open fire, where RPGs wreak havoc. Learn about what causes these extreme conditions, and what we, as citizens, need to know about both prevention and survival in a worst-case scenario.

Descendants of the first peoples and pioneers mingle with newcomers washed ashore from distant cities in these stories of small town life in a community too small to have a town. Young homeowners grapple with the depredations of heartsick woodpeckers. Anarchist loggers nail indignant poems to roadside trees. Shamanic gardeners work to heal a damaged world one lawn at a time. Deceptively simple stories with deep feeling.

Crooks, cofounder of Army Wife Network As the wife of a Marine Corps officer, Mollie Gross learned the hard way to laugh instead of cry at what she could not control—and as she quickly discovered, nearly everything was out of her control. A standup comedienne, Mollie explores everything about the “issued” spouse, from deployment and the stress of having a husband in a combat zone, to the realization that marriage changes when your husband returns home from war. Nothing is taboo or out-of-bounds in this funny, poignant memoir, including the “parties” military wives throw for themselves before hubby returns. (You’ll have to read the book to find out about those.) “Mollie Gross is the Chelsea Handler of the milspouse community. She’s unfiltered, honest, and hilarious, with an underlying message to stop whining and be proud. Think of it as heartfelt humor for the home front.” — Military Spouse magazine “Mollie’s no-holds-barred account of what it was like during her first four years of being married to a Marine, dealing with the moves, wartime deployments, and life on the home front, will leave you laughing, crying, and shaking your head in disbelief asking, ‘Did she really just say that!?’” — Kristine Schellhaas, founder of USMC Life

Book excerpt: “Captures the excitement that Ali created in a generation of young African Americans, who found in the brash, young boxer a new kind of hero.” —Booklist Includes photos From his childhood in the segregated South to his final fight with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali never backed down. He was banned from boxing during his prime because he refused to fight in Vietnam. He became a symbol of the antiwar movement—and a defender of civil rights. As “The Greatest,” he was a boxer of undeniable talent and courage. He took the world by storm—only Ali could “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” From a New York Times–bestselling author and winner of numerous awards—including the Michael L. Printz Award, Newbery Honors, a Caldecott Honor and five Coretta Scott King awards—this is an inspiring biography of Ali, Olympic gold medalist, former heavyweight champion, and one of the most influential people of all time. “Myers interweaves fight sequences with the boxer’s life story and the political events and issues of the day. He doesn’t shy away from reporting on the brutality of the sport and documents the toll it has taken on its many stars . . . Myers’s writing flows while describing the boxing action and the legend’s larger-than-life story.” —School Library Journal

Emily's waitressing job is suddenly in jeopardy when the diner is put on the market, and she anxiously wonders how she will pay her half of the mortgage. If that's not enough, the dates she tentatively embarks on don't turn out quite as well as she expected, and the support she seeks from her mother is met with acute disapproval. Emily resolves to put three-year-old Dante first. Her sister Clara and best friend Michelle are her greatest cheerleaders while she works desperately to carve out a sunnier future for herself and her son. In her heart, Emily never stops dreaming of a man to grow old with and a true love to call her own.
