Book Synopsis The History Book by : Moderna museet (Stockholm, Sweden)
Download or read book The History Book written by Moderna museet (Stockholm, Sweden) and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stockholm's venerable Moderna Museet celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2008. After half a century, this book looks not only back, but forward as well--to critically examine what the museum's future influence should be. When it opened in 1958, Moderna Museet was an instant major player in the development of international Modern art--legends abound about its history-making parties and the important conversations and transactions that have taken place inside its walls. This volume accounts many of these anecdotes and analyzes their import with a fresh perspective. More than a dozen esteemed writers, historians and curators--including Eva Eriksson, Maria Görts and Annika Gunnarsso--emphasize three main points of inquiry in 14 incisive essays, including the Moderna Museet's history and the development of its collections, ways in which the museum's key exhibitions have impacted the history of art and the museum's international profile and reputation.

Book excerpt: How did art escape the deadlock of the Situationists? anti-art refusal? Did the relational artists, with their repetitions of Situationist slogans and techniques, outline a sustainable, micro-political alternative to Guy Debord?s dream of surpassing art and realizing philosophy? Looking back at some of the Situationists? confrontations with the museum, this book traces a path beyond the tragedy of negativity and the litany of recuperation. At the center is the concept of play; originally adopted as the principle of reconciled life, it returns as the lever of instrumentalization. But in the extraterrestial wasteland of the present, spaces of ludic coexistence and experimentation may remain possible, provided that pessimism can be adequately organized.

Book excerpt: How should we understand post-war art? How were issues of cultural transfer and curatorial strategies dealt with in the extended 1960s - the era of pop? Art in Transfer in the Era of Pop juxtaposes issues and contexts approaching the concept and reception of Pop Art. Contributors from Europe and beyond weave a web that resists the notion of universialism, adding to art historian Piotr Piotrowski's "horizontal" art history. This volume avoids the historiographic stance where the US--Europe relationship appears to be a one-way affair. Instead, the reader is drawn into the history of the circulation and cross-pollination of ideas, the aesthetic practices and the various contexts that influenced them.

Book Synopsis What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: an (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle by :
Download or read book What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: an (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle written by and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography by Nicole Rudick told in Saint Phalle's own words, assembled from rare and unseen materials Known best for her exuberant, often large-scale sculptural works that celebrate the abundance and complexity of female desire, imagination and creativity, Niki de Saint Phalle viewed making art as a ritual, a performance--a process connecting life to art. This unconventional, illuminated biography, told in the first person in Saint Phalle's voice and her own hand, dilates large and small moments in Saint Phalle's life which she sometimes reveals with great candor, at other times carefully unwinding her secrets. Editor Nicole Rudick, in a kind of collaboration with the artist, has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle's visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches and writings, many previously unpublished or long unavailable, that trace her mistakes and successes, her passions and her radical sense of joy. Saint Phalle's invocation--her "bringing to life"--writes Rudick, "is an apt summation of the overlap of Saint Phalle's life and art: both a bringing into existence and a bringing to bear. These are visions from the frontiers of consciousness." Born in France, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was raised in New York and began making art at age 23, pursuing a revelatory vision informed both by the monumental works of Antonin Gaudí and the Facteur Cheval, and by aspects of her own life. In addition to her Tirs ("shooting paintings") and Nanas and her celebrated large-scale projects--including the Stravinsky Fountain at the Centre Pompidou, Golem in Jerusalem and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany--Saint Phalle produced writing and works on paper that delve into her own biography: childhood and her break with her family, marriage to Harry Mathews, motherhood, a long collaborative relationship with Jean Tinguely, numerous health crises and her late, productive years in Southern California. Saint Phalle has most recently been the subject of retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in 2015, and at MoMA P.S.1, in 2021. Nicole Rudick is a critic and an editor. Her writing on art, literature and comics has been published in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, the New Yorker, Artforum and elsewhere. She was managing editor of the Paris Review for nearly a decade. She is the editor, most recently, of a new edition of Gary Panter's legendary comic Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise (New York Review Comics, 2021).

Book Synopsis Paul Thek in Process by : Susanne Neubauer
Download or read book Paul Thek in Process written by Susanne Neubauer and published by Jrp Ringier. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Thek in Process evolved from the discovery of an unrealized publication project by the American artist Paul Thek (1933–1988), which had been discussed while he was installing his first space-filling environment, Pyramid/A Work in Progress in 1971, and which was to have been released for documenta 5.For this project, around 800 images were taken capturing the progress of the installation, as well as the final form of this pivotal work of 1970s installation art, Pyramid/A Work in Progress. This book contains not only a large number of unpublished images, but also evaluates the complex organizational task of the installation's conception and eventual realization. It offers an exhibition history seen through the backdoor, with particular attention paid to the status of the ephemeral objects that remain as contingent representatives of the lost work. The selected and reproduced source material is understood as curated in terms of its re-incorporation of what has been left out of art and exhibition history.Consequently, the book takes a documentary and fragmentary approach, and reproduces numerous contact sheets and a large selection of the photographic images, all the remaining correspondence between the artist and the institution, the exhibition and work-related ephemera, as well as the press coverage of the show.
