Book excerpt: The time of the COVID-19 Pandemic was a time of quarantine and isolation for many people, causing much loneliness and sadness. As an Associate Minister and a member of a few ministries in my church, I felt led to try to bring some encouragement and inspiration to the members of these ministries. And so, with the aid and anointing of the Holy Spirit, I began frequently sending these short messages to the ministries via e-mail. Those messages have resulted in the compilation of this present work. They are my thoughts, reflections, musings, and meditations during the year-long period of quarantine, isolation and restrictions. However, the majority of these reflections are not merely my thoughts, but they are scripturally based, backed by the Word of God. Some of them may be considered Sermonettes. For example, let's take a look at one of the readings dated April 1, 2020 and entitled "In the Valley." Psalm 23:4 says "Yea though I walk through the valley and the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." Because of this Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are most certainly in a valley right now. Sickness and death are all around us. Nevertheless, the operative phrase in this verse is: "THROUGH THE VALLEY" with emphasis on the word, "THROUGH." Yes the situation seems dark right now; it's frightening and scary, but it's also temporary. We shall not stay in this valley. We can put our CONFIDENCE in the Lord of the valley, believe that He will lead us THROUGH this valley. Also, we are not alone in this valley, for the Lord of the valley is with us. He is our COMPANY-KEEPER, and if we can look away from the scary shadows and focus on the company-keeper, the author and finisher of our faith, He will keep us by His grace and mercy, and we know that His grace is sufficient, and His mercy endures forever. Finally, this verse not only gives us confidence and a company-keeper, but it promises COMFORT, and this comfort comes from the Lord of the valley's Rod and His staff--the Written Word and the Living Word. The Written Word (the Bible) with its promises of provision and protection is our source of comfort, and the Living Word, who is Jesus, our Shepherd, leads us THROUGH this valley. "Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He will strengthen our heart. WAIT, I SAY, ON THE LORD!" (Psalm 27:14). In April of 2020, many folk were becoming so anxious, so devastated, and actually fearful of what was happening, I was led to try to help people understand that they were not alone, and that they would get through it in God's time. Although, at this writing, we are almost completely through that valley, it is my prayer that these readings will continue to strengthen you and comfort you in any other "valley" you may find yourself going through.

Book excerpt: The Japanese poetry form of haiku is perfect for capturing moments of time and reflecting on life. Using it to ponder life's deepest questions and universal truth is something poets have been doing for centuries. During the year of 2020, writing haiku each day helped me stay grounded in a world that seemed to be falling apart. It gave me a moment to be present and think about what I value, what is important to me, and how to give back to others. I hope this book does the same and helps you appreciate all the amazing miracles—big and small—that exist in the world. In this book, you will find over 100 haiku and five mini essays centered around Mindfulness, Compassion, Gratitude, Love & Loss, and Give & Forgive. Each chapter ends with questions for your own reflection or inspiration. Feel free to ponder them at your leisure. Your purchase of this book helps support me (Anthony Nanfito) as an independent author, as well as my podcast: The Haiku Pond. The first season of the podcast features selected haiku from this book as well as haiku submitted by other poets. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Based on a daily journal I recorded when walking part of the Camino de Santiago, this beautifully illustrated book shares with honesty, pathos and humour, the experience of a modern pilgrim. For those unable to travel right now, you are invited to journey devotionally to the tomb of the apostle and be inspired in planning your own future adventure. For those whose physical travelling days are behind them; you can be transported to the dusty paths, beautiful chapels, and pine and eucalyptus woodland of rural Spain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic is a defining event of the 21st century. It has taken over eighteen million lives, closed national borders, put whole populations into quarantine and devastated economies. Yet while COVID-19 is catastrophic, it is not unique. Children who have been home-schooled during COVID-19 will almost certainly face another pandemic in their lifetime - one at least as bad-and potentially much worse-than this one. The WHO has referred to such a future (currently unknown) pathogen as “Disease X”. The defining feature of a pandemic is its scale-the simultaneous threat to millions or even billions of lives. That scale leads to unavoidable ethical dilemmas since the lives and livelihood of all cannot be protected. But since one of the most powerful ways of arresting the spread of a pandemic is to reduce contact between people, pandemic ethics also challenges some of our most widely accepted ethical beliefs about individual liberty and autonomy. Finally, pandemic ethics brings vividly to the foreground debates about the structure of society, inequalities, disadvantage and our global responsibilities. In this timely and vital collection, Dominic Wilkinson and Julian Savulescu bring together a global team of leading philosophers, lawyers, economists, and bioethicists. The book reviews the COVID-19 pandemic to ask not only 'did our societies make the right ethical choices?', but also 'what lessons must we learn before Disease X arrives?'

Book excerpt: 2020 had just begun...We gathered with friends and family as we had many times before. We watched our children playing happily together without a care in the world. We talked about our plans for the new year. Someone was going on her first cruise. Another was planning a wedding. Her sister had just gotten the lead role in the high school musical. Her cousin's dream of going to the Olympics was about to come true. We passed around pictures and shared memories. Then we piled into our vans and headed to our favorite restaurant. Meanwhile, the clouds were rolling in...The events of this past year have left us, the whole world, reeling, wondering if life will ever get back to normal. No one expected the storm to last this long. Many see it as an interruption rather than as an integral part of our lives. The truth is that God saw it coming. He was not taken by surprise. Even now, He is weaving it into the very fabric of our being. He can use all of life's circumstances as vehicles to draw us closer to Himself. This little book is a reflection of the work He has done in my heart, not only through this pandemic, but through my entire life. I pray that it will be a blessing and an encouragement to all who read it, especially those who wonder if God is there and if He cares.

The chapters describe how people enjoyed their passions for the arts in new and unexpected ways, given the restrictions of COVID-19 safety protocols, and how scripted and reality television programming helped them escape, however briefly, from the traumas of the pandemic, the racial injustice, the political machismo and divisiveness of this time. This book will be of particular interest to scholars of communication, media studies, sociology, cultural studies, and gender studies.

Book excerpt: Discover a different way of seeing and responding to the Coronavirus pandemic, an approach drawing on Scripture, Christian history, and the way of living, thinking, and praying revealed to us by Jesus. What are we supposed to think about the Coronavirus crisis? Some people think they know: "This is a sign of the End," they say. "It's all predicted in the book of Revelation." Others disagree but are equally clear: "This is a call to repent. God is judging the world and through this disease he's telling us to change." Some join in the chorus of blame and condemnation: "It's the fault of the Chinese, the government, the World Health Organization…" N. T. Wright examines these reactions to the virus and finds them wanting. Instead, he shows that a careful reading of the Bible and Christian history offers simple though profound answers to our many questions, including: What should be the Christian response? How should we think about God? How do we live in the present? Why should we lament? What should we learn about ourselves? How do we recover? Written by one of the world's foremost New Testament scholars, God and the Pandemic will serve as your guide to read the events of today through the light of Jesus' death and resurrection.
