Book excerpt: With an enormous velocity, olefin polymerization has expanded to one of the most significant fields in polymers since the first industrial use about 50 years ago. In 2005, 100 million tons of polyolefins were produced - the biggest part was catalyzed by metallorganic compounds. The Hamburg Macromolecular Symposium 2005 with the title "Olefin Polymerization" involved topics such as new catalysts and cocatalysts, kinetics, mechanism and polymer reaction engineering, synthesis of special polymers, and characterization of polyolefins. The conference combined scientists from different disciplines to discuss latest research results of polymers and to offer each other the possibility of cooperation. This is reflected in this volume, which contains invited lectures and selected posters presented at the symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents all information necessary to understand the functioning of a slurry loop reactor for the polymerisation of ethylene into high density polyethylene, and to operate it accordingly. All discussions are based on experimental data from the operation of full scale commercial loop reactors. Methods for off-line modelling and scaling-up from lab to full scale are included, as well as the answers to important questions on the running of two loop reactors in series. Building knowledge from full scale industrial experience. This highly accessible book makes one understand the functioning of slurry loop reactors for the polymerisation of ethylene, and how to operate them. Its methods include off-line modelling, scaling-up and running reactors in series. It is inspiring for all production and process engineers, showing, for the first time, how with full scale reactor data the link is made between firm basic theory and the most practical operating guidelines.

Book excerpt: Poly (ethylene oxide) discusses the molecular characteristics of a crystalline, thermoplastic, water-soluble polymer. The book presents the preparation of ethylene oxide; the synthesis of high and low molecular weight polymer; and the complexes with acrylic and methacrylic acid polymers. The text describes the radiation crosslinking of solutions and discusses the electrical conduction of saturated organic polymers. Another topic of interest is the surface tension and density of polyethylene glycol. The section that follows describes the reactivity and comonomer structure of copolymers. The book will provide valuable insights for chemists, students, and researchers in the field of organic chemistry.

Book excerpt: Single-site catalysts revolutionized the polyolefin manufacturing industry and research with their ability to make polymers with uniform microstructural properties. Several of these catalysts are currently used commercially to produce commodity and differentiated-commodity resins. The key to their rapid success and industrial implementation resides in the fact that they can be used without major modifications in the polymerization reactors that previously used heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta and Phillips catalysts. Since most of these industrial processes use slurry or gas-phase reactors, soluble single-site catalysts must be supported on adequate carriers that ensure not only high activity, but also the formation of polymer particles with the proper morphology and bulk densities. Metallocene catalysts have been supported on a variety of carriers, but supporting late transition metal catalysts has not been investigated in detail, despite their very interesting properties such as tolerance to polar comonomers and impurities, activity in the absence of MAO, and the formation of short chain branches by the chain walking mechanism. The research work of this PhD thesis intends to fill this gap, by developing supported late transition metal catalysts with high catalyst activities towards ethylene polymerization and good polymer particle morphology.

Book excerpt: This work aims to study ethylene polymerization from the free radical polymerization process to the copolymerization by a hybrid radical/catalytic mechanism. PE is synthesized by free radical polymerization under milder experimental conditions than industrial ones (P>1000 bar and T>100°C). Indeed free radical polymerization of ethylene is efficient even down to pressure of 5 bar and temperature of 10°C. Several unexpected behaviors are observed such as a high solvent activation effect. Beside the slurry process in organic solvent, polymerization in aqueous dispersed media is also performed. Stable PE latexes are obtained with solid contents up to 40%. Two different PE particles morphologies are observed cylinder-like and sphere-like. Then free radical copolymerization is studied using a broad range of polar vinyl monomers in organic solvent and emulsion. Insertions up to 50% of ethylene are obtained under mild conditions. The ambivalent role of comonomer as monomer and activator of the polymerization is highlighted. In order to obtain a wide range of composition of polar/non-polar copolymers a new technique of polymerization has been developed. A nickel complex is used to initiate the free radical polymerization and to catalyse the coordination/insertion ethylene polymerization. This nickel complex is capable of a reversible homolytic cleavage of its nickel-carbon bond. Finally, this hybrid process is used to copolymerize efficiently ethylene with various polar vinyl monomers. Multiblock copolymers with ethylene content from 1% to 99% are obtained by simply varying the monomer feeds.
