Book excerpt: The steady-state degradation and gasification of polystyrene was examined by a driven-rod radiant pyrolysis technique. The impinging radiation flux (5.6 watts/cm-2) produced the same surface regression rate (0.06 cm/min) as was observed for the rods burning in air. The temperature profile in the regressing rod was measured by a fine thermocouple (0.13 mm junction) and the result used in conjunction with isothermal degradation kinetics to predict the rate of polystyrene gasification. The predicted rate is about 65% of the observed rate for the case of a nitrogen atmosphere. Other experiments include an examination of the effect of oxygen in the ambient gas and measurements of the molecular weight distribution in the degraded rods. It is concluded that the degradation mechanism for polystyrene is substantially unchanged in going from isothermal pyrolysis to combustion conditions.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the thermal degradation of polymers is of paramount importance for developing a rational technology of polymer processing and higher-temperature applications. Controlling degradation requires understanding of many different phenomena, including chemical mechanisms, the influence of polymer morphology, the complexities of oxidation chemistry, and the effects of stabilisers, fillers and other additives. This book offers a wealth of information for polymer researchers and processors requiring an understanding of the implications of thermal degradation on material and product performance.

Book Synopsis Developments in Polymer Degradation—7 by : N. Grassie
Download or read book Developments in Polymer Degradation—7 written by N. Grassie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume, like that of its predecessors in the series, is to present a selection of topics which are representative of the continually expanding area of polymer degradation. It will be obvious that some of these topics emanate from academic studies, others from more applied backgrounds, but it is anticipated that all will be seen to be of vital relevance to one or other of the currently advancing fields of polymer technology. The first two chapters deal with specific classes of polymers, and particularly with their mechanisms and products of thermal degrada tion. Thus in Chapter 1 Dr McNeill discusses the reactions of the ammonium, alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of poly(methacrylic acid) and their copolymers with methyl methacrylate. These water soluble 'ionomers' have valuable technological applications. In Chap ter 2 Professor Montaudo and Dr Puglisi perform a valuable service by drawing together and critically reviewing, for the first time to my knowledge, the mechanisms of thermal degradation of the various classes of condensation polymers which are of industrial significance. This includes, for example, the polyurethanes, polyureas, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyamides, polyimides, polyethers, polysulphides, polysulphones, polyschiff bases, polysiloxanes and polyphosphazenes.

Book Synopsis Characteristics and Analysis of Non-Flammable Polymers by : T.R Crompton
Download or read book Characteristics and Analysis of Non-Flammable Polymers written by T.R Crompton and published by Smithers Rapra. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increasing demand for fire retardant versions of a range of plastics. Such applications are fire retardancy in vehicles, aircraft, manned space vehicles, marine and industrial applications such as electronics and a wide range of applications in the building industry including roofing and interior walls. Also in domestic applications such as furniture, clothes, bedding, upholstery and electrical goods. Fire retardancy in polymers can be achieved by either of three ways. Firstly there are forms of polymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, which are intrinsically fire retardant. The second type are rendered fire retardant by the inclusion of a suitable additive in the formulation. These include additives based on bromine, antimony, nitrogen phosphorus and silicon. An essential requirement for fire retardant polymers used in enclosed spaces is that they do not release any toxic products upon combustion. In this respect antinomy containing additives are going out of favour due to the release of toxic antimony volatiles upon combustion. Thirdly, introduction of intumescence into polymers by the introduction of suitable compounds is being increasingly used as a means of imparting fire retardancy in polymers. There exists a plethora of methods used to assess fire retardancy in polymers. These are discussed and summarised in this book. The book will be of interest not only to working in industry but also to design engineers and producers in the polymer fabrication industries.
Book Synopsis Polymer Degradation and Stabilisation by : Norman Grassie
Download or read book Polymer Degradation and Stabilisation written by Norman Grassie and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1988-04-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of polymer degradation and stabilisation is of considerable practical importance as the industrial uses of polymeric materials continue to expand. In this book, the authors lucidly relate technological phenomena to the chemistry and physics of degradation and stabilisation processes. Degradation embraces a variety of technologically important phenomena ranging from relatively low temperature processes such as 'weathering' of plastics, 'fatigue' of rubbers through the processing of polymers in shearing mixers to very high temperature processes such as flammability and ablation. All these technological phenomena have in common certain basic chemical reactions. Thus 'weathering' has its roots in photo-oxidation, 'fatigue' and melt-degradation in mechano-oxidation and flammability, and ablation in ablation in pyrolysis and vapour phase oxidation.
