Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of polyhedra is an ancient one, going back to the dawn of history. It is especially those polyhedra called uniform that have evoked the greatest interest and provided the most fascination. It should therefore be of special usefulness in classrooms today for students to see and handle paper models they have made. Making models is a genuine outlet for the creative spirit, and it can also stimulate interest in the study of mathematics. The cube, the tetrahedron, the cone, the cylinder, the sphere, shown on the front cover, are basic objects in such a study. This booklet gives instructions on how to make models like the cube and the tetrahedron. The cube has six square faces and the tetrahedron has four triangular faces. Models with faces that are other polygons, such as pentagons, hexagons, etc., are also shown in this booklet. The cone with a circular base and the cylinder with circular top and base and the sphere belong to higher mathematics. The models in this booklet when made will enhance the appearance of the classroom. The Addendum gives computer links where further help and information can be found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dual Models, written in the same enthusiastic style as its predecessors Polyhedron Models and Spherical Models, Magnus J. Wenninger presents the complete set of uniform duals of uniform polyhedral, thus rounding out a significant body of knowledge with respect to polyhedral forms. He begins with the simplest convex solids but then goes on to show how all the more difficult, non convex, uniform polyhedral duals can be derived from a geometric theorem on duality that unifies and systematizes the entire set of such duals. Many of these complex shapes are published here for the first time. Models made by the author are shown in photographs, and these, along with line drawings, diagrams, and commentary, invite readers to undertake the task of making the models, using index cards or tag paper and glue as construction materials. The mathematics is deliberately kept at the high school or secondary level, and hence the book presumes at most some knowledge of geometry and ordinary trigonometry and the use of a scientific type small electronic calculator. The book will be useful as enrichment material for the mathematics classroom and can serve equally well as a source book of ideas for artists and designers of decorative devices or simply as a hobby book in recreational mathematics.

Book excerpt: Polyhedra have cropped up in many different guises throughout recorded history. In modern times, polyhedra and their symmetries have been cast in a new light by combinatorics an d group theory. This book comprehensively documents the many and varied ways that polyhedra have come to the fore throughout the development of mathematics. The author strikes a balance between covering the historical development of the theory surrounding polyhedra, and presenting a rigorous treatment of the mathematics involved. It is attractively illustrated with dozens of diagrams to illustrate ideas that might otherwise prove difficult to grasp. Historians of mathematics, as well as those more interested in the mathematics itself, will find this unique book fascinating.

Book excerpt: This innovative book — among the first to combine the art of origami with making polyhedra-based models — shows papercrafters how to create over 60 different polyhedral from origami units. Comprised of modules made of single sheets of paper, the figures offer model builders and math students alike a stimulating entrée into the world of three-dimensional geometric origami. Origamists are initially introduced to a number of preliminary folds that will aid in constructing a variety of figures. Step-by-step instructions and clearly outlined diagrams then show how to create polyhedral ranging from a relatively simple tetrahedron and cube to such mind-boggling fabrications as the double pentagonal pyramid, a truncated hexadecahedron and the 92-faced snub dodecahedron. You'll also learn to construct these intriguing polyhedral: a stellated icosahedron, an equilateral triangle dodecahedron, and a truncated octahedron. Graded according to difficulty, these multifaceted projects will not only challenge devotees of the ancient Japanese art of paper folding but will be useful in classroom demonstrations of mathematical principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Course in Modern Geometries is designed for a junior-senior level course for mathematics majors, including those who plan to teach in secondary school. Chapter 1 presents several finite geometries in an axiomatic framework. Chapter 2 introduces Euclid's geometry and the basic ideas of non-Euclidean geometry. The synthetic approach of Chapters 1 - 2 is followed by the analytic treatment of transformations of the Euclidean plane in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 presents plane projective geometry both synthetically and analytically. The extensive use of matrix representations of groups of transformations in Chapters 3 - 4 reinforces ideas from linear algebra and serves as excellent preparation for a course in abstract algebra. Each chapter includes a list of suggested sources for applications and/or related topics.
