Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Trunk roads and motorways represent a major risk of accidental pollution of groundwater owing to the intensity of heavy-goods traffic transporting dangerous cargoes. To reduce these risks, road builders are under an obligation to install protective systems along roads traversing vulnerable zones, the additional investment being justified by the potential cost of decontamination of soil and water following an accident. This book addresses engineers involved in infrastructure development, motorway operating companies, engineering design technicians, and public water protection agencies. The book starts with a general presentation of groundwater and its vulnerability to pollution, and also of various products transported by road in terms of their physical characteristics, toxicity and behaviour in the soil. This is followed by a discussion of preventive methods that can be used on and alongside the carriageway and of the methods of intervention and soil and groundwater decontamination that can be applied in the event of accidental pollution.

Book Synopsis Changing roles for local and regional government in environmental management by :
Download or read book Changing roles for local and regional government in environmental management written by and published by VSP. This book was released on 1984-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International discussion of environmental management is essential not only because of the international nature of the problems concerned but also to enable workers in one country to benefit from the experience gained in another. This symposium provided an international forum at which to discuss the role of local and regional governments in environmental management. The success of future policies will depend, to a large extent, on the readiness of such local bodies to initiate, co-operate, co-ordinate and implement in this field. The book includes key papers by leading experts from Europe and the USA. Papers are grouped into three main areas: environmental requirements from various participants in the process; policy and practice; new demands on administration and management --- organisational, financial and managerial consequences. Also included are five short papers and the reports of three discussion groups.

Book Synopsis Introduction à l'écotoxicologie : Fondements et applications by : RAMADE François
Download or read book Introduction à l'écotoxicologie : Fondements et applications written by RAMADE François and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis An Historical Geography of France by : Xavier de Planhol
Download or read book An Historical Geography of France written by Xavier de Planhol and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-03-17 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1994 book, Xavier de Planhol and Paul Claval, two of France's leading scholars in the field, trace the historical geography of their country from its roots in the Roman province of Gaul to the 1990s. They demonstrate how, for centuries, France was little more than an ideological concept, despite its natural physical boundaries and long territorial history. They examine the relatively late development of a more complex territorial geography, involving political, religious, cultural, agricultural and industrial unities and diversities. The conclusion reached is that only in the twentieth century had France achieved a profound territorial unity and only now are the fragmentations of the past being overwritten.
Book Synopsis Living with Risk by : Susan L. Cutter
Download or read book Living with Risk written by Susan L. Cutter and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1995-03-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the use of case studies, the book examines in detail the nature of a variety of technological hazards, including chemical hazards, hazardous waste, and nuclear waste. Cutter argues that technological risks and hazards are products of failures in the political, social and economic systems that govern the use of technology just as much as they are failures in the technological systems themselves.

Book Synopsis The Franks in the Aegean by : Peter Lock
Download or read book The Franks in the Aegean written by Peter Lock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the enormous literature on the crusades, the Frankish states in the Aegean (set up in the wake of the Fourth Crusade in 1204) have been seriously neglected by modern historians. Yet their history is both compelling in itself - these were the last crusader states to be set up in the eastern Mediterranean and among the last to fall to the Turks - and also valuable for the case study they offer in medieval colonialism. Peter Lock surveys the social, economic, religious and cultural aspects of the region within a broad political framework, and explores the clash of cultures between the Frankish interlopers and their Byzantine subjects. This is a major addition to crusading studies.
Book Synopsis The Desegregated Heart by : Sarah Patton Boyle
Download or read book The Desegregated Heart written by Sarah Patton Boyle and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah Patton Boyle’s personal crusade for civil rights began in the fall of 1950, when the University of Virginia refused to admit Gregory Swanson, the Negro student who challenged its policy of segregation. Confident that this wrong could be righted quickly, Mrs. Boyle, the wife of a professor at the University, went forth to do her share—to meet not only with the burning crosses of white hatred but with decided wariness on the part of Negroes. Here is the story of Mrs. Boyle’s lonely struggle—the more courageous for her aristocratic Virginia background and traditional Southern upbringing. It is also the story of her painful re-education—of a Southerner’s discovery of “the real Negro, the real white man, and herself.” A fascinating, reaffirming read. “It should be read by everyone with the brotherhood of man.”—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “A most interesting and revealing book, honest, compassionate. The South needs it; Negroes need it; northerners need it. It is beautiful in its candor and deeply moving....”—Lillian Smith
