This book was released on 2006-09-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews experience in mitigating the environmental impacts of inland waterway development. It examines effective consultation and planning procedures across Europe. In particular it assesses the ways in which the EU Water Framework Directive affects the planning environment for international waterways and sets a new agenda for improving the ecological value of waterways. The report makes recommendations on good practice and identifies the Danube river basin as the critical area for improvement. This is where the efforts of international governmental organisations and NGOs could most usefully be combined to develop a basin-wide environmental protection and waterway development strategy.
Book Synopsis Freshwater Microplastics by : Martin Wagner
Download or read book Freshwater Microplastics written by Martin Wagner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume focuses on microscopic plastic debris, also referred to as microplastics, which have been detected in aquatic environments around the globe and have accordingly raised serious concerns. The book explores whether microplastics represent emerging contaminants in freshwater systems, an area that remains underrepresented to date. Given the complexity of the issue, the book covers the current state-of-research on microplastics in rivers and lakes, including analytical aspects, environmental concentrations and sources, modelling approaches, interactions with biota, and ecological implications. To provide a broader perspective, the book also discusses lessons learned from nanomaterials and the implications of plastic debris for regulation, politics, economy, and society. In a research field that is rapidly evolving, it offers a solid overview for environmental chemists, engineers, and toxicologists, as well as water managers and policy-makers.

Book Synopsis Water Pollution by : Kilian Schreier

Book excerpt: "Over two thirds of Earth's surface is covered by water; less than a third is taken up by land. As Earth's population continues to grow, people are putting ever-increasing pressure on the planet's water resources. In a sense, our oceans, rivers, and other inland waters are being "squeezed" by human activitiesnot so they take up less room, but so their quality is reduced. Since water is the source of life and essential for all life on the planet, the use of this resource is a highly important issue. Poorer water quality means water pollution. Water pollution is any contamination of water with chemicals or other foreign substances that are detrimental to human, plant, or animal health. Water pollutants include fertilizers and pesticides from agricultural runoff; sewage and food processing waste; lead, mercury, and other heavy metals; chemical wastes from industrial discharges; and chemical contamination from hazardous waste sites. Worldwide, nearly 2 billion people drink contaminated water that could be harmful to their health. Water pollution is a major global problem that requires ongoing evaluation and revision of water resource policy at all levels. This Book provides detailed information about different topics and gives a general overview of the current issues in water pollution and its management. The chapters, contributed by eminent scientists and experts, cover a wide range of current issues, reflecting on current problems and demonstrating the complexity of water pollution. It also reports on water pollution management technology that is low-tech, cheap and above all ecologically friendly. This book will be useful to environmental scientists, water professionals, researchers, academics and students."
