Book Synopsis Pollution Control for Agriculture by : Raymond Loehr
Download or read book Pollution Control for Agriculture written by Raymond Loehr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution Control for Agriculture is a substantial revision of the ""Agricultural Waste Management"" book that discusses the implications and possible management systems for crop production. This 14-chapter text also provides the basic information needed to understand the concern on pollution from agricultural wastes. Agricultural wastes are defined as the excesses and residues from the growing and first processing of raw agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products. The introductory chapters deal with the influence of legal constraints and changing agricultural practices on the environmental problems associated with agricultural production. The following chapter focuses on the characteristics of food processing wastes and animal wastes. The remaining chapters are devoted to the fundamentals, principles, and benefits of various waste management processes and treatment systems, including biological and biochemical processes, ponds and lagoons, oxygen transfer, aerobic, anaerobic, physical and chemical treatments, nitrogen control, and land disposal. This book is of great value to food agricultural producers, scientists, and engineers who are interested in knowing and applying feasible agricultural waste management concepts and approaches.

Book Synopsis Fertilizer Manual by : Travis P. Hignett
Download or read book Fertilizer Manual written by Travis P. Hignett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Fertilizer Manual was prepared by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) as a joint project with the United Nations Industrial Development Organi zation (UNIDO). It is designed to replace the UN Fertilizer Manual published in 1967 and intended to be a reference source on fertilizer production technology and economics and fertilizer industry planning for developing countries. The aim of the new manual is to describe in clear, simple language all major fertilizer processes, their requirements, advan tages and disadvantages and to show illustrative examples of economic evaluations. The manual is organized in five parts. Part I deals with the history of fertilizers, world outlook, the role of fertilizers in agriculture, and raw materials and includes a glossary of fertilizer-related terms. Part II covers the production and transportation of ammonia and all important nitrogen fertilizers-liquids and solids. Part III deals with the characteristics of phosphate rock, production of sulfuric and phosphoric acid, and all important phosphate fertilizers, including nitrophosphates and ammonium phosphates. Part IV deals with potash fertilizers-ore mining and refining and chemical manufac ture; compound fertilizers; secondary and micronutrients; controlled-release fertilizers; and physical properties of fertilizers. Part V includes chapters on planning a fertilizer industry, pollution control, the economics of production of major fertilizer products anJ intermediates, and problems facing the world fertilizer industry.

Book Synopsis Development Document for Effluent Limitations Guidelines and New Source Performance Standards for the Basic Fertilizer Chemicals Segment of the Fertilizer Manufacturing Point Source Category by : United States. Environmental Protection Agency. Office of Air and Water Programs. Effluent Guidelines Division
Download or read book Development Document for Effluent Limitations Guidelines and New Source Performance Standards for the Basic Fertilizer Chemicals Segment of the Fertilizer Manufacturing Point Source Category written by United States. Environmental Protection Agency. Office of Air and Water Programs. Effluent Guidelines Division and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the findings of an extensive study of the fertilizer industry for the purpose of developing effluent limitation guidelines for existing point sources and standards of performance and pretreatment standards for new sources to implement sections 304, 306, and 307 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, as amended (33 U.S.C. 1551, 1314, and 1316, 86 Stat. 816 et. seg.)(the "Act"). The study included a detailed and extensive exemplary plant survey, contacts with consultants and government officials, and literature search. The industry survey involved data gathering, sample collection and analysis, and personal visitation with responsible plant operating personnel to obtain first-hand information on treatment technology in commercial use and technology in development and pilot plant stages. The three main outputs from the study were: industry categorization, recommendations on effluent guuidelines, and definition of treatment technology. The fertilizer industry was divided into five categories for more meaningful separation and division of waste water treatment and development of effluent guidelines. These subcategories are phosphate, ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate and nitric acid products. The phosphate subcategory includes all ancillary operations necessary for phosphate production (e.g. sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid). Effluent guidelines for best practicable control technology currently available, best available technology economically achievable, and new source performance standards are recommended for each category. Treatment technologies such as either in-process or end-of-process add on units are available or are in advanced development stages to enable existent and future fertilizer plants to meet the recommended effluent guidelines.
Book Synopsis Environmental Policies for Agricultural Pollution Control by : J. S. Shortle
Download or read book Environmental Policies for Agricultural Pollution Control written by J. S. Shortle and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001-09-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the environmental problems associated with agriculture, particularly the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and the disposal of animal waste. These have become major policy issues in many countries, with the main polluting effect being on water quality. As with other types of pollution, significant reductions in agriculture's contribution to water pollution requires the application of either enforceable regulatory approaches or changes in the economic environment, so that farmers adopt environmentally-friendly production practices. Providing a review and guide to the policy options and their economic administrative and political merits, the reader can develop an understanding of these options and their merits in the emerging policy context. The principal focus is on the developed world, particularly North America and Europe. The book is aimed at advanced students, researchers and professionals in agricultural economics and policy, and environmental and pollution sciences.
