Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pollination and Fruit Setting in the Apple From general Observations and from carefully controlled experiments, it has been possible to classify most of the commercial varieties Of apples into a number Of classes ranging from the self-fruitful - those setting fruit with own pollen - to the kinds which are entirely self-unfruitful. A good many varieties will set a small amount Of fruit through self-pollination, but this will not be enough to produce a paying crop. The results presented in Tables 1 and 2 Show the apple varieties which will self fertilize. No difference is noted in the fruit set when a variety is self pollinated, when it is pollinated with the pollen from different flowers on the same tree, or when it is pollinated with pollen from different trees of the same variety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sterility Relationships in Maine Apple Varieties It is well known by horticulturists that most apple varieties are self-sterile and that for good Sets of fruit provision must be made for pollen varieties and for the transmission of pollen from tree to tree. A knowledge of what varieties are inter-fertile is necessary in selecting those to be planted together or for top working certain trees in large blocks of self-sterile varieties. Most investigators have concluded that honey bees are essential for carrying pollen from one variety to another. A list of self-sterile and self - fertile apple varieties and those known to be inter-fertile has been published in bulletin 287 of the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station. In this bulletin are included sterility relationships of varieties grown in all parts of the country, but. Complete records are not available for some of the most important varieties grown in Maine. In some cases the. Conclusions were tentative, as they were based on insufficient numbers. It is also evident from recent work that local condi tions peculiar to New England may make unnecessary certain recommendations which may be applicable to other regions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Fruit Grower In this age of book-making, a new book should not be urged u]hi the public unless to supply a real need. My excuse for presenting at this time this little volume, is the want, on the part of beginners in the business of fruit culture, and of the common farmer who has not the time nor inclination to study extensive works upon the subject, of a hook that shall he sold at a small price yet cover the entire field of fruit cultivation, in all its details, in a plain and practical manner. The limits of the present work, however, will not allow of an extended discussion as to the merits of the many methods of growth and cultivation, and I have aimed to give only such as are largely practiced by the most successful fruit growers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pollination of the Mango Attacking the problem of mango sterility from several angles, as herein outlined, it has been possible to eliminate several factors here tofore generally believed to have some bearing on the question. Apparently the difficulty is not due to any morphological defect in the pollen or to defects in the mechanism of pollination. By the ex clusion of these factors and from the observation of trees in Florida and other regions during several seasons, the conclusion has been reached that the problem is a physiological one, connected with nutritional conditions as influenced by changes in soil moisture and food supply, principally the former. While such factors as lack of pollinating insects and loss of pollen through excessive rains may at times have an injurious effect upon the mango crop, '-it seems safe to assert that the question of pollination is of comparatively little importance from a practical standpoint. Experiments have been undertaken, with the cooperation of Prof. E. 'j. Kraus, to test the practicability of inducing the formation of flower buds through ringing, girdling, and banding the limbs with wire. The work of Prof. Kraus at the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station 1 with pomaceous fruits has sug gested various methods of this nature, and the results of these experi ments with the mango will be watched with interest. At various times excellent results have been reported from ringing and girdling the mango, but systematically arranged experiments along. This line have not been undertaken. It may be that ringing the mango should become a standard orchard practice, but it is'hoped that from the present experiments it will be possible to learn more concerning the physiology of fruit setting in the mango and thereby establish other orchard practices, such as cultivation or pruning, best adapted to insure commercial crops of fruit. In Cuban experiments, fertilizers very rich in potash have yielded good results in the way of increased fruit production. It is to be hoped that such experiments as these will bring to light a practicable method of encouraging the formation of fruit buds on soils or under climatic conditions which normally tend to produce vegetative growth to the exclusion of reproduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple-Bud Selection, And, Apple Seedlings From Selected Trees The nature of the plants is such that the projects must of necessity extend over a considerable number of years. Judgment as to the value of a fruit tree is based upon capacity to bear fruit and upon the char acter of the fruit produced. It follows that trees propagated from selected seeds or from selected buds must become well established in fruit production before conclusions are possible from which answers to the original questions may be formulated.
