Wie kann die Umsetzung der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung in der Praxis aussehen? Der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit ist seit Jahren in aller Munde, nicht nur wegen der verstärkten Forderung nach mehr Umweltschutz der ‚Fridays For Future‘-Demonstrierenden, sondern auch aufgrund der aktuellen Brisanz. Eine stetig zunehmende Menge an Plastikmüll in den Weltmeeren, Mikroplastik in Lebensmitteln und im Grundwasser, sich häufende Naturkatastrophen und der Klimawandel führten nicht nur zu strengeren Gesetzen und Regeln, sondern auch zu einem Umdenken vieler Menschen in ihrem Privat- und Berufsleben. Viele nehmen häufiger mal das Fahrrad, um in die Arbeit zu fahren und verzichten beim Einkaufen auf Lebensmittel in Plastikverpackungen. Im beruflichen Bereich stellten viele Landwirte ihren Betrieb zu mehr Nachhaltigkeit um. Im Jahr 2020 lag der Anteil der Landwirte in Deutschland, die ihren Betrieb ökologisch bewirtschafteten, bei ungefähr 10 Prozent. ‚Nachhaltig leben‘ oder ‚nachhaltig einkaufen‘ ist zum Trend geworden und nicht selten werden andere, die diesem Trend nicht nachgehen und den Discounter mit vollen Plastiktüten verlassen, kritisch beäugt. Doch was bedeutet ein nachhaltiger Lebensstil eigentlich? Mit dem neuen SUV zum fünf Kilometer entfernten Bio-Laden zu fahren oder im Supermarkt alles in Plastikverpackungen zu kaufen, sicher nicht. Beim Einkauf darauf zu achten, ob die Produkte auch regional verfügbar sind und diese nur in der richtigen Saison zu kaufen oder öfter mal das Fahrrad zu nehmen, wohl eher. Aber in dieser Debatte über nachhaltig leben oder nicht, erscheint es doch, dass der Nachhaltigkeitsbegriff in den letzten Jahren einen gewissen Bedeutungsverlust durchlaufen hat und häufig inflationär verwendet wird.

Dafür wird die Arbeit in sechs Kapitel gegliedert: Um ein Fundament zur Beantwortung dieser Frage herzustellen, werden nach einer kurzen Einführung zunächst die drei Grundprinzipien politischer Bildung nach Sander vorgestellt. Anknüpfend daran wird der Beutelsbacher Konsens mit seinen Leitgedanken involviert. Daran wird die Thematik der Nachhaltigkeit angeschlossen. Um Verständnis über die Thematik aufzubauen, wird zunächst der Begriff definiert und anschließend das Konzept der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung sowie deren Ziele erklärt. Folglich werden die genannten Gliederungspunkte im Zusammenhang gebracht und die Grenzen der Verfolgung der Ziele von Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung werden anhand des Beutelsbacher Konsens diskutiert. Zum Abschluss wird die Arbeit mit einem Fazit abgerundet.

Zwar hat die Agenda 21 weltweit für ein Umdenken gesorgt, jedoch sind wir auf dem Weg zur Erreichung ihrer Ziele nur sehr wenig vorangekommen. Immer neue Gefahren tun sich für das Ökosystem auf und der Elan der Staatenwelt, Änderungen herbeizuführen, scheint nicht sonderlich groß zu sein. Gleichzeitig verblasst die Agenda 21 in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung. Grundeinsicht der Agenda 21 ist, dass die Staatengemeinschaft nicht allein in der Lage ist, die Welt in einen Zustand der Nachhaltigkeit zu überführen. Die Zivilgesellschaft muss mithelfen und von sich aus Anstrengungen unternehmen um dieses Ziel zu erreichen. Aufgabe der Bildung ist es, dafür zu sorgen, dass das Thema Nachhaltigkeit ins öffentliche Bewusstsein gelangt. Neben dieser Kommunikationsfunktion hat die Bildung die Funktion, die Zivilgesellschaft für nachhaltiges Handeln zu qualifizieren. Wie genau Umweltpädagogik zu verstehen ist, beschreiben Armin Kremer und Hilmar Westholm in ihren Beiträgen für das XVII. Friedrich Jahresheft. Ihre Positionen sollen hier dargelegt werden. Anhand der Betrachtung der Agendaprozesse in Deutschland und Pakistan soll festgestellt werden, inwieweit die Realität ihren Erwartungen entspricht. Schließlich sollen diesen Beobachtungen Folgerungen für die Aufgabe der Bildung in diesem Prozess folgen.
