Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Politics, Time, Flying, and Voices " is a collection of four short stories that weave together routine circumstances and some ideas that may or may not be possible. Readers of a book like this might just find some surprises for each of the characters in each of the stories as follows: "The Political Campaign Amateur ": A politician is running for office who might have good ideas but cannot communicate them very well. The candidate is also prone to gaffes while speaking. He then receives unexpected help with improved campaign messaging. The help is in the form of articulate suggested speeches submitted by someone who is unexperienced with professional political campaign management or political speechwriting. "It's Just a Matter of Time": Two different people who live apart love their precious time together when they visit with each other. They also have similar frustrations regarding time or time management. Futuristic ideas such as flying cars, nanocomputers, and foglets might provide each of them hope for overcoming those frustrations. " Another Type of Transportation " What if one could travel from point A to point B regardless of distance without the hassles or expense of traditional flying or the limitations of airline schedules ? " The Ears and Eyes Above " Changes in direction that Harry pursued with his life seemed to cause him to see and hear deceased relatives or "the folks upstairs" conducting discussions about his activities and thoughts. And then it appeared that there was an unseen but ongoing video-taping process recording everything that Harry was doing and thinking.

Book excerpt: Real-Time Ground-Based Flight Data and Cockpit Voice Recorder Unique text determining the feasibility for implementation and manufacture of ground-based black box systems Real-Time Ground-Based Flight Data and Cockpit Voice Recorder helps familiarize the reader with the nature of issues surrounding existing black box technology integrated on aircrafts and to understand the benefits and importance of proposed real-time ground-based alternative solutions. These are based on predicting aircraft problems while in flight, including understanding the feasibility of using the already existing space and ground-based wireless technologies infrastructures for this purpose. The authors discuss expense reductions in the crash investigation when implementing the new concepts in this book as compared to existing procedures when aircraft accidents occur. The text also opens new research ideas for future investigations. Simulation codes are included to allow for further independent exploration into the covered concepts and ideas. Topics covered in the book include: Satellite Data Transfer Implementation, including basics of the technology, channel data rate, PSTN-based satellite implementation, and expected availability of spectrum Very High Frequency Digital Link (VDL), including modes, sublayers, data transfer, packet and frame structure, and number of channels needed to support a certain number of airplanes Modern Airplane Communication Technologies (including direct air-to-ground communication using 5G) and terahertz band communications; and their integration into aviation communications Black box final architecture and connectivity, including ground and UAV connectivity, and general black box wireless communications challenges For aviation industrial engineers and technical staff, managers, and aerospace and academic researchers, Real-Time Ground-Based Flight Data and Cockpit Voice Recorder is a valuable guide to existing and future technology to successfully predict aircraft problems during flight.

Book excerpt: No, Anti-Book is not a book about books. Not exactly. And yet it is a must for anyone interested in the future of the book. Presenting what he terms “a communism of textual matter,” Nicholas Thoburn explores the encounter between political thought and experimental writing and publishing, shifting the politics of text from an exclusive concern with content and meaning to the media forms and social relations by which text is produced and consumed. Taking a “post-digital” approach in considering a wide array of textual media forms, Thoburn invites us to challenge the commodity form of books—to stop imagining books as transcendent intellectual, moral, and aesthetic goods unsullied by commerce. His critique is, instead, one immersed in the many materialities of text. Anti-Book engages with an array of writing and publishing projects, including Antonin Artaud’s paper gris-gris, Valerie Solanas’s SCUM Manifesto, Guy Debord’s sandpaper-bound Mémoires, the collective novelist Wu Ming, and the digital/print hybrid of Mute magazine. Empirically grounded, it is also a major achievement in expressing a political philosophy of writing and publishing, where the materiality of text is interlaced with conceptual production. Each chapter investigates a different form of textual media in concert with a particular concept: the small-press pamphlet as “communist object,” the magazine as “diagrammatic publishing,” political books in the modes of “root” and “rhizome,” the “multiple single” of anonymous authorship, and myth as “unidentified narrative object.” An absorbingly written contribution to contemporary media theory in all its manifestations, Anti-Book will enrich current debates about radical publishing, artists’ books and other new genre and media forms in alternative media, art publishing, media studies, cultural studies, critical theory, and social and political theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Politics and the English Language, the second in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell takes aim at the language used in politics, which, he says, ‘is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind’. In an age where the language used in politics is constantly under the microscope, Orwell’s Politics and the English Language is just as relevant today, and gives the reader a vital understanding of the tactics at play. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Book excerpt: A revelatory journey inside the world of Fox News and Roger Ailes—the brash, sometimes combative network head who helped fuel the rise of Donald Trump NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A SHOWTIME LIMITED SERIES • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR When Rupert Murdoch enlisted Roger Ailes to launch a cable news network in 1996, American politics and media changed forever. With a remarkable level of detail and insight, Vanity Fair magazine reporter Gabriel Sherman puts Ailes’s unique genius on display, along with the outsize personalities—Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Megyn Kelly, Sarah Palin, Karl Rove, Glenn Beck, Mike Huckabee, Gretchen Carlson, Bill Shine, and others—who have helped Fox News play a defining role in the great social and political controversies of the past two decades. From the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal to the Bush-Gore recount, from the war in Iraq to the Tea Party attack on the Obama presidency, Roger Ailes developed an unrivaled power to sway the national agenda. Even more, he became the indispensable figure in conservative America and the man any Republican politician with presidential aspirations had to court. How did this man become the master strategist of our political landscape? In revelatory detail, Sherman chronicles the rise of Ailes, a frail kid from an Ohio factory town who, through sheer willpower, the flair of a showman, fierce corporate politicking, and a profound understanding of the priorities of middle America, built the most influential television news empire of our time. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with Fox News insiders past and present, Sherman documents Ailes’s tactical acuity as he battled the press, business rivals, and countless real and perceived enemies inside and outside Fox. Sherman takes us inside the morning meetings in which Ailes and other high-level executives strategized Fox’s presentation of the news to advance Ailes’s political agenda; provides behind-the-scenes details of Ailes’s crucial role as finder and shaper of talent, including his sometimes rocky relationships with Fox News stars such as O’Reilly, Hannity, and Carlson; and probes Ailes’s fraught partnership with his equally brash and mercurial boss, Rupert Murdoch. Roger Ailes’s life is a story worthy of Citizen Kane. The Loudest Voice in the Room is an extraordinary feat of reportage with a compelling human drama at its heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, “having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of ‘unhappy’ top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little.”
