Book excerpt: This book brings together some of the major events between the mid-nineteenth century when the British started making inroads into Sikkim, and the merger of Sikkim with India in 1975. During this period of about 100 years, Sikkim changed its status from an independent feudal state to a protectorate of the British Empire, then as a protectorate of independent India and finally as the 22nd state of the Union of India. When all, the factors and events of that period are put together and all that the people at that time had thought, done and gained and all their mischief, crimes, follies and misfortunes are viewed in the context of destiny of that region, they combine to form a picture which is at once tense and kaleidoscopic. It begins with the historical background with a brief history of the situation as it prevailed in Sikkim, Tibet, Bhutan & Nepal in the early 18th Century; with Sikkim becoming a British protectorate; examines the implications of the Anglo-Chinese Convention of 1890 followed by Lord Elgin with regard to the demarcation of the Sikkim-Tibet border; forward policy of Lord Curzon, the bogey of Russian intrigues in Tibet and the Younghusband expedition to Tibet; period of harmony and conflict of interests; Sino-Pak collusion and the Chinese ultimatum to open a second front in the Sikkim sector in support of Pakistan in its war against India in 1965; the pattern of Chinese propaganda & psychological warfare launched on the Sikkim-Tibet border; China’s unprovoked heavy firing at Nathu La and Cho La; internal turmoil during the decade of 1965-75, a period of fever, unrest, extreme tension and political changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State in the Colonial Periphery: A Study on Sikkims Relation with Great Britain, as the preliminary title of the book indicates; it uncovers the relation between Sikkim and Great Britain, from the beginning of the relationship in the early nineteenth century, till the end of the British Colonial rule in India. This book expands upon the existing literature by uncovering the British influence in the region and its impact in determining the politics of the region. This work connotes Sikkim with the term colonial periphery which is neither a state under colonialism, nor outside the zone of influence of colonialism and predominantly acts according to the aspirations of the colonizer. After the end of British paramountcy in India, a delegation headed by Crowned Prince, Thondup Namgyal went to Delhi to discuss the matters relating to Sikkim with the British Officials. But since, the paramountcy had already been lapsed, they urged Sikkims delegation to discuss the matter with independent India. Independent India didnt define the status of Sikkim, eventually India signed a Standstill Agreement (1948), to discuss the future and position of Sikkim in open. The Treaty of 1950 confirmed the sovereignty of Sikkim and Sikkim became the protectorate state of India, as it was of Britain. The international implication and the demands for the larger democracy in Sikkim, led to the merger, a peripheral state became the part of India. The contact with the British transformed the traditional monastic state with cultural, political and religious affinities with Tibet, into a modern state. Sikkim is still to some extent a virgin territory for the researchers, much work remains to be done on the period of British influence in the region; perhaps this is the first on the said theme. This work has made an attempt towards contributing to the fulfilment of this need. This work attempts to provide some answers to the question of British influence in shaping the politics of the region and its impact on the state of Sikkim. Overall, this study makes the conclusion that the regional, political, economic and strategic interests of British colonialism played a key role in determining the political developments and present political situation in Sikkim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in 1973 that G.B.S. Sidhu, a young official with the newly set-up Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), took charge of the field office in Gangtok in 1973. With an insider's view of the events that led to the Chogyal's ouster, he presents a first-hand account of the fledgling democracy movement and the struggle for reforms led by Kazi Lhendup Dorji in a society that was struggling to come to terms with the modern world. In his fast-paced, clear-sighted narrative, Sidhu tracks the reasons behind New Delhi's shift from a long-standing pro-Chogyal stand to a pro-democracy position and maps the political alignments on the ground in Sikkim. He outlines the interplay of personalities-Indira Gandhi, the Chogyal, the Kazi, and the Indian officials and intelligence agencies involved-to reveal the chain of events that led to the merger of the Himalayan kingdom with India.
