Book Synopsis Creating an Excellent School by : Hedley Beare
Download or read book Creating an Excellent School written by Hedley Beare and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. The pursuit of excellence is much discussed with reference to education, but the question remains, ’How can a school become excellent?’ This book demonstrates that excellence depends on good management which, in turn, depends not only on a clear understanding of good management theory, but on the ability to translate theory into practice. The authors offer profound insights into three crucial areas of leadership: culture, structure, and public accountability. Drawing on areas outside education, such as advertising and business, they discuss many innovations that are already current - flexitime, the vertical curriculum, mastery learning, community support - and depict ways in which these can be brought together into a total educational experience. More strikingly, however, they look ahead, examining the potential changes to our concept of schooling: for instance those brought about by the growth of information technology. This book emphasises that at the heart of outstanding schooling are visionary leadership, a clear sense of purpose, and creatively conceived and flexible support structures.

Book excerpt: There is a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development in Nigeria. In the twenty years of electoral democracy, poverty, inequality, unemployment, underemployment and insecurity have increased. The hopes of citizens that democracy would lead to improved living standards have been dashed. Social justice and inclusive sustainable development have also been elusive. The economy has remained dependent on 2 primary sectors - agriculture and oil - and low value added services. The aspiration that by 2020, Nigeria would become one of the twenty leading economies in the world has not been achieved, the political elite have captured the state for personal gains and unsurprisingly, Nigeria remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
Book Synopsis History of Education in Nigeria by : A. Babs Fafunwa
Download or read book History of Education in Nigeria written by A. Babs Fafunwa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, a comprehensive history of Nigerian Education, from early times right through to the time of publication, had long been needed by all concerned with Education in Nigeria, students, teachers and educational administrators. No one was better qualified than Professor Fafunwa to provide such a book, and in doing so he gave due emphasis to the beginnings of Education in its three main stages of indigenous, Muslim and Christian Education. Nigerian Education had been considered all too often as a comparatively recent phenomenon, but this book points out from the start that ‘Education is as old as Man himself in Africa’ and that both Islam and Christianity were comparative newcomers in the field. A historical treatment of these three strands which have combined to make up the modern Educational system was vital to a clear understanding of what was needed for the future, and most of the first half of the book is concerned with these Educational beginnings. The imposing of a foreign colonial system on this framework did not always lead to a happy fusion of the systems, and the successes and the failures are examined in detail. There was no shortage of documentary evidence in the form of reports and statistics during the decades prior to publication, but this evidence was frequently scattered and inaccessible to the student, so that the author’s careful selection of key evidence and reports, often drawn from his own personal experience, will be invaluable for those wishing to trace the development of Education in Nigeria up to the early 1970s. A knowledge of the history and development of the Nigerian Education system, of the numerous and intensely varied personalities and beliefs which have combined and often conflicted to shape it, is indispensable to all students in colleges and universities studying to become teachers. It is this knowledge that Professor Fafunwa set out to provide, drawing on his wide experience as teacher writer and educationalist.
Book Synopsis Class Formation and Civil Society by : Patrick M. Boyle
Download or read book Class Formation and Civil Society written by Patrick M. Boyle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this study of the politics of education in Cameroon, the Congo and Kenya presents arresting empirical evidence that urban elites exiting public sector educational systems they have dominated in favour of private school networks of their own creation. Seeking to enhance their offspring’s chances for survival and even domination in a world of scarce resources and limited opportunities for employment, elites see private schools as tools to shape newly emerging civil societies in Africa in their own image. From a theoretical perspective, the fresh evidence presented here shows that schooling has once again become a major social force influencing the balance of state and society in modern Africa. Re-examining an older political tradition of class analysis and integrating it into more recent civil society perspectives, the author shows that the abandonment of the unreliable education services of dysfunctional African states in favour of private schools has profound consequences for class articulation in societies dividing, once again, according to educational opportunities.

Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, , language: English, abstract: This study focused on education as an effective instrument for grassroot development in Nigeria with particular reference to Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra state. The subject used for the study includes civil servants and private sectors. A total of one hundred and sixty copies of questionnaire were designed for the study was administered. The relevant data collected were analyzed using chi-square. The result shows that educational can bring awareness in the society change that will lead to developments and there is human capital development that leads to the improved standard of living at the grassroots level. Education is an activity we all feel that we know something about having had practical experience of it. Nwosu (2014) defined education as the process of socializing the individuals to develop his/her capabilities, and abilities to acquire knowledge, skills, habits, interest, attitudes and behaviours that enable the individual adjust and respond to the environmental conditions in order to function effectively in the society for maximal personal and national development. Dewey (1963) defined education as a fostering, a nurturing and a cultivating process. This definition implies that education leads to development or growth. Okoh, Ejedimu and Okafor (2013) noted that education is essential for survival and social change in the modern society. It is the foundation upon which physical and technological developments rest, as well as a veritable tool in the development of any nation especially developing ones. Thus, the value and functionality of nay education system lies in its ability to actualize the goals of education which emphasizes on self development of learners and usefulness to the socio-political and economic well being of the country (Odunayo and Olujuwon, 2010).
