Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Problems of American Development The present volume is made up of a series of lectures delivered as the opening course upon the new Blumenthal Foundation in Columbia. University. The lectures are printed as they were delivered, with no material changes. It would seem desirable to say in this prefatory note that, quite regardless of the titles assigned to the separate lectures (which here appear as chapters), the work is to be taken as a single essay or dissertation. We are only at the beginning of the history of a great blended family of white men of European stock who have made their homes in what was so recently the wilderness of North America, and who are working out for themselves a life of varied human relationships in their effort toward the realization of certain ideals and standards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of American Democracy: Political, Economic, Social To the gradual crystallization of educational thought in favor of a general study of the social sciences in secondary institutions, this book owes its origin. The attempt has been made to acquaint the student with the bold outlines of the political, economic, and social development of Amer ican institutions. The task involved presented so much freedom of choice that, naturally, opinion may differ as to the relative importance of the various materials available for this purpose. However, the aim has been to provide the student with typical material for a general introduc tory course in problems of democracy, which not only stresses certain fundamental characteristics of our own civilization, but preserves at the same time a proper bal ance between the political, the economic, and the social factors in American life. Furthermore, the topics selected have been treated as unified problems, each of which is dis cussed from the standpoint of general social development, rather than subdivided into a series of separate, air-tight compartments labeled political, economic, and social. Since this volume presents a combined treatment of these three elements, it is intended primarily to meet the needs of those institutions in which opportunity is lacking for a detailed treatment of the social sciences individually. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise and Growth of American Politics: A Sketch of Constitutional Development The purpose of this work is to tell the story of our politics so as to explain their nature and inter pret their characteristics. Consideration Of ques tions of public policy or of party issues does not enter into the plan, and they are referred to only as they have affected the formation of political structure; but in this respect their influence has been so continuous that the work presents a view of our political history from colonial times to the present day. The Object, however, has been to give an explanation of causes rather than a narra tive of events, so that the reader may understand the actual system of government under which we live. Our politics do not become intelligible until they are viewed as an offshoot from English poli tics, and the growth of the variety is studied with regard to the characteristics of the stock. This is the method pursued in the present work, with results which, I hope, will Show the Operation of principles of order and progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unto the Hills: Some of America's Problems Hen the Psalmist wrote, I will lift mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help, he recorded a profound truth underlying the development of the human race. Racial, political and economic progress have been possible because men of vision have been able to turn their eyes from the dead level of doubt to the living hills of hope. Throughout the ages of man, the hills have typified the power of personality and embodied the intensity of inspira tion. The restless souls of the great have risen triumphant from the fogs and mists of human weakness, reached the heights, and, like Moses, viewed the promised land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen IN many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repe tition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in American Democracy There is an increasing demand for a textbook which will bring the student into direct contact with the great current issues of American life, and which will afford practical training to those who soon must grapple with the economic, social, and political problems of our own time. It is with the hope of meeting such a demand that this text has been prepared. The plan of the book calls for a word of explanation. It is poor pedagogy to expect the student to attack the defects of American life, and at the same time to place in his hands a book which deals preeminently with the mechanism of government. As well send a boy to a hardware store to buy tools before he is told whether he is to make a mouse-trap or a boat. Furthermore, to spend much more time on the mechanism of government than on the actual problems of democracy is a mistake in emphasis. Government is a means, not an end. It is a tool by means of which we attack and solve our problems. Therefore the student of this text begins, not with the mechanism of government, but with the historical background of American democracy, its origin, development, and promise for the future. Following this is a brief survey of the economic life of the nation, because that economic life constitutes the fundamental basis of our problems. Considerable space has been devoted to a problem growing directly out of economic conditions, i.e. the question of social justice or industrial reform. This is the most pressing question before any modern people, but strangely enough one which heretofore has been neglected by our schools. Because they tend to arise primarily from a bad economic situation, such social problems as industrial relations, health in industry, and immigration are next considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Movement: A Non-Partisan, Comprehensive Discussion of Current Tendencies in American Politics So much attention has been given to the rise and development of the Progressive party in the United States that there has been a tendency to overlook the larger and more fundamental movement of which it is a part. Although this movement had struck its roots far back in the past and was already vigorous and grow ing when the campaign of 1912 began, the sudden, meteoric appearance of the new party, the striking per sonality of its candidate for President, and the wide variety of issues raised, thrust the movement itself into the background. The result has been a confusion of the party with the movement, a belief that they advocate precisely the same principles, and a conviction that they must stand or fall together. Book excerpt: Problems in American Democracy by Thames Williamson There is an increasing demand for a textbook which will bring the student into direct contact with the great current issues of American life, and which will afford practical training to those who soon must grapple with the economic, social, and political problems of our own time. It is with the hope of meeting such a demand that this text has been prepared. The plan of the book calls for a word of explanation. From social problems the text passes to the economic and social functions of government, and thence to the question of making government effective. The mechanism of government has been placed last, and for the reason already given, i.e. because a knowledge of the framework of government is valuable only after the citizen knows something of the needs which that mechanism must be made to fill. It has not been easy to compress into a single volume the most important of our national problems. Obviously, a rigid selection has been necessary. In this selection the aim has been to discuss the more important issues of American life, whether economic, social, or purely political. In dealing with these issues, the attempt has been made to keep in mind the student's previous preparation; on the other hand, the civic demands which the future will make upon him have not been ignored. Some of the problems are difficult, but they are also of vital importance. Very shortly the student will be confronted, in his everyday activities, with such puzzling matters as socialism, the control of immigration, and taxation reform. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Democracy in America Professors Peter Drucker, Delbert Miller, and Robert Dahl approach this problem from very distinct vantage points, and this is clearly reflected in the content Of their argument. Thus, the reader is treated to a spectrum of opposing views by a constitutional lawyer, a sociologist, and a political scientist. If there is little apparent agree ment among them, there is at least a sharpening of focus on the major facets of the problem Of individual freedom and decision-making in contemporary American society. The discussion opens with a paper by Professor Drucker on Individual Freedom and Effective Government in a Society Of super-powers. In bold, sweeping strokes, Drucker outlines the dramatic change that has occurred in the world since 1900, the change in the power-structure and power-dynamics Of society. He briefly delineates some of the major dilemmas that have arisen to face us as a result Of this change - dilemmas which are worldwide in scope. The heart of his discussion is the effect of this change on the federal and local levels of government in the United States, and the consequences for the individual citizen. The fol lowing questions form the focus Of his attention: 1) How to restore effectiveness to government; (2) How to prevent interest-group power - centers from usurping governmental functions; and (3) How to safeguard and strengthen the freedom Of the person.
