Book excerpt: The institutional and legal provisions for change from the colonial regime to a social welfare polity, made during the post-independence days did open up scope for women of India to attain a fair measure of justice and equality. To translate such provisions into living realities the task was to make women involved in various participatory situations and opportunities and thereby influence theri existing social relationships and attitudes which have kept them vulnerable. Tracing this development, Sampa Guha sets the stage for an anlysis of that process as if unfolds in the experience of women of West Bengal. She examiens the nature of mobilization of women, whereby they could have been made aware and orgnised so that they might be able to break the shackles of constraints which they find themselves in.

Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a concern at the marginal presence of women in Politics. The concern has been voiced through international for a on the one hand and national and local level women groups and academics on the other. The involvement of women in politics in now regarded as an important factor for a healthy democracy. No democracy can be termed as healthy, if half on the population does not participate in the political process. It is also being increasingly realized that participation as mere voters is not enough. It has to be followed by large scale participation in the policy-formulation and decision making process. This book is an attempt at analyzing the problems related to women's political participation in the Indian context. Gender and patriarchy have been used as the conceptual framework. The environmental factors-socio-economic, political and cultural-are in some way or the other, directly related to the norms of gender and patriarchy . How are women’s positions and spaces changing due to their political participation in the urban local governance? and 2. What are the major hurdles they face in their day to day lives barring their emancipation? The main strength of the book lies in the in-depth grounded research in four small cities (Darjiling, Balurghat, Raniganj and Hugli-Chinsurah) using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. This volume can be considered as a reference book for Gender Studies, Women’s Studies, Urban Governance, Women and Policy Research, Gender Development Studies.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Other International Politics Topics, , language: English, abstract: It is an axiomatic fact that women leadership does not grow automatically rather it grows with the dynamic process of socio-cultural development of the country. Bangladesh and West Bengal, having a traditional socio-economic structure, do not have regular and systematic process of political participation of women, which is directly or indirectly linked to patriarchal values and kinship ties. Despite that in the recent days, numbers of women leaders at the grassroots level local government of both geographical areas have increased remarkably due to some change in the socio-cultural contexts and dimensions. Therefore, it deserves academic analysis and interpretation to delve into the dynamics and process of socio-cultural context that have contributed for the development of women leadership in both cases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quotas for women in government have swept the globe. Yet we know little about their capacity to upend entrenched social, political, and economic hierarchies. Women, Power, and Property explores this question within the context of India, the world's largest democracy. Brulé employs a research design that maximizes causal inference alongside extensive field research to explain the relationship between political representation, backlash, and economic empowerment. Her findings show that women in government – gatekeepers – catalyze access to fundamental economic rights to property. Women in politics have the power to support constituent rights at critical junctures, such as marriage negotiations, when they can strike integrative solutions to intrahousehold bargaining. Yet there is a paradox: quotas are essential for enforcement of rights, but they generate backlash against women who gain rights without bargaining leverage. In this groundbreaking study, Brulé shows how well-designed quotas can operate as a crucial tool to foster equality and benefit the women they are meant to empower.

Book excerpt: This important and comprehensive volume vividly depicts the current status of women and girls in West Bengal. The analysis has been conducted in the framework of the socio-economic and politico-cultural ambience that has characterized the state in recent decades. The contributors highlight both areas of strength and vulnerability and clearly demonstrate that the status of women cannot be conceived as monolithic or static--it has many facets and is in a state of constant flux. The analysis of macro data is supported by revealing micro studies based on field surveys and an examination of cultural trends.

This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s self-help groups (SHGs) have increasingly been used as a vehicle for social, political, and economic empowerment as well as a platform for service delivery. Although a growing body of literature shows evidence of positive impacts of SHGs on various measures of empowerment, our understanding of ways in which SHGs improve awareness and use of public services is limited. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper first examines how SHG membership is associated with political participation, awareness, and use of government entitlement schemes. It further examines the effect of SHG membership on various measures of social networks and mobility. Using data collected in 2015 across five Indian states and matching methods to correct for endogeneity of SHG membership, we find that SHG members are more politically engaged. We also find that SHG members are not only more likely to know of certain public entitlements than non-members, they are significantly more likely to avail of a greater number of public entitlement schemes. Additionally, SHG members have wider social networks and greater mobility as compared to non-members. Our results suggest that SHGs have the potential to increase their members’ ability to hold public entities accountable and demand what is rightfully theirs. An important insight, however, is that the SHGs themselves cannot be expected to increase knowledge of public entitlement schemes in absence of a deliberate effort to do so by an external agency.
