Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes a critical review of Nigeria’s attempts to achieve rapid industrial development since independence from Britain in 1960. It details the issues, challenges, and hard choices confronted by Nigerian political leadership and highlights the reasons why the country ultimately failed to achieve industrial take-off in spite of its abundant human and material resources. Chapters take a retrospective look at government industrial development policies and programs, including the steel industry, agro-allied and forest-based industries, and the industrial estate development program. The book also discusses tariff and trade policies, incentives and disincentives to foreign direct investment (FDI) in the manufacturing sector, and small and medium enterprise (SME) development. The book concludes with a look at the recent drive towards regional integration as well as the potential impact of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the European Union and sixteen countries of West Africa. Providing an exhaustive history of Nigeria’s economic and industrial development, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students of African economics, development studies, and industrial organization, as well as policy makers in both the public and private sectors.

Book Synopsis Capital and the State in Nigeria by : John Ohiorhenuan
Download or read book Capital and the State in Nigeria written by John Ohiorhenuan and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since achieving independence in 1960, Nigeria has suffered through a civil war, the overthrow of elected governments in repeated military coups, and severe economic crises. This study looks at the country's economic development under these conditions and in light of Nigeria's status as a Third World nation with an economy largely dependent on foreign capital and international markets. Focusing on state economic policy, Ohiorhenuan assesses Nigeria's development as a dependent capitalist economy under military rule and identifies both the factors that promote this type of development and those that constrain it. After describing the country's current economic state, Ohiorhenuan discusses the relationship between economic dependency and capitalist development in Nigeria and then considers the economic policies of successive military regimes. Specific topics include the military's capital accumulation program and management of the economy, the restructuring of property rights, the critical role of Nigeria's oil surplus, and the government's attempts to control the organized working class. In a study of two types of collaboration between the state and transnational capital, Ohiorhenuan explores the limitations on direct governmental accumulation of capital. This systematic and incisive examination of Nigeria's political economy is a significant contribution to the understanding of Third World development processes. This book is a useful resource for policy research, studies or classes dealing with modern Africa, with Third World development, and international political economy.

Book Synopsis The Feasibility of the Democratic Developmental State in the South by : Daniel A. Omoweh
Download or read book The Feasibility of the Democratic Developmental State in the South written by Daniel A. Omoweh and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the prospects of a democratic developmental state in Latin American, African and Asian countries, collectively referred to in this work as the global South. Practically, the state refers to the political leadership. Within this context, it interrogates the politics of the state and the unresolved critical issues it has engendered in the state-development discourse such as the need to re-conceptualize the developmental state, democratization, elections, inclusion, indigenous entrepreneurial and business class, political parties and cooperation among the countries of the South. It looks into the need to re-centre the sought state in the development process of the Southern countries after over two and a half decades of embracing neo-liberal policies and economic reforms that, rather than transform, sank the adjusted economies into deeper political, social and economic crises. It contends that the capacity of the state to overcome the market and democratic deficits resides with its democratic credentials. Finally, it suggests strategies that could lead to the rise of a democratic developmental state in the South.

Book Synopsis Political Economy of Colonial Relations and Crisis of Contemporary African Diplomacy by : Kelechi Johnmary Ani
Download or read book Political Economy of Colonial Relations and Crisis of Contemporary African Diplomacy written by Kelechi Johnmary Ani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a historical account of the colonial foundation of African economy and diplomacy. It reveals how the colonial companies and their agents penetrated different parts of Africa and entrenched Western colonialism and imperialism. Ironically, the arrival of these colonial companies became a driver of colonial labour migration as the educated and few privileged African people have to move towards the location of the colonial companies in order to eke-out improved standard of living. It presents the dynamics of import and export trade as promoted by the colonial companies. Consequently, the second part of the book raised the nature of relations amongst some independent African states. First, it reveals the deep-rooted challenge of poverty, migration problem, xenophobia in South Africa and resource conflicts within sovereign border areas of Nigeria and Cameroon as well as the Ethiopian dam crisis with Egypt, as some negative effects of colonialism on some African states. Secondly, it advocated for the advancement of African sports diplomacy, balancing of Chinese African trade diplomacy and improved labour migration within Africa as some paths to sustainable diplomacy in continent.

Ayoola, examines key social, political, and economic issues in Nigeria since the colonial period. This book brings together writings on colonial, postcolonial, and contemporary history of Nigeria that provide a panoramic view of diversity, bridge gaps in Nigerian history, and engage with pioneering scholarship in railway and social history in Nigeria by James Olawale Oyemakinde. Some of the themes and perspectives discussed throughout this collection include: contemporary challenges of poverty, unemployment, leadership and governance deficit, entrepreneurship, urbanization, and the underdevelopment of the agricultural and transport systems. Politics, Economy, and Society in Twentieth-Century Nigeria demonstrates that understanding the past helps to develop appropriate policies for contemporary challenges.
