Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines foreign direct investment in a changing world economy. It offers case-studies of this investment in different national and industrial contexts. Firms and countries have encountered mixed results in using this investment to further their foreign leverage. Conversely, potential host countries have faced different opportunities and constraints in attracting or utilizing foreign capital for their development. Although some countries have been relatively successful, most do not appear to be well positioned to take advantage of the ongoing processes of globalization of national economies.

Book excerpt: Why has public policy had only an indirect impact on Thailand¿s considerable developmentNULL This comprehensive report points to policy differences within the country¿s government. First it describes macroeconomic policies that advanced private enterprises, promoted universal education, and created productive state-owned companies. Then the report compares these policies with government interventions that--until recently--heavily favored capital-intensive industries over agriculture and labor-intensive manufacturing. Thailand¿s successful economic adjustment program is also examined. This program produced double-digit growth rates in the late 1980s by opening trade, expanding labor-intensive exports, and encouraging foreign direct investment.
Book Synopsis Determinants and Consequences of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Thailand by : Derrick Parker
Download or read book Determinants and Consequences of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Thailand written by Derrick Parker and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research analyzes the determinants and consequences of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Thailand, with particular emphasis on reviewing the Thai government's FDI policies, and these policies' effectiveness for enabling the country's sustainable development. Past research has indicated that, despite developing countries' various attempts to improve their economic growth and increase their standard of living via internationalization, many of these attempts have proven unsuccessful. In the case of Thailand, there is debate regarding how the government can influence and regulate FDI in a manner that is most beneficial to the country's long-term growth and development. It has long been recognized that Thailand's economic policies are determined in a political environment that is driven mainly by individuals' and groups' personal interest. Thus, research on the political process of policy formation is essential to predict future policy directions. This research takes a more concentrated approach by examining the effects of FDI on Thailand's economic growth in the context of the political economy. The main areas examined are: (i) whether FDI has had a positive effect on the Thai economy; (ii) in which sector FDI has been most productive; (iii) whether the Thai government has been successful in achieving improved economic growth through implementing its FDI policies; and (4) if not, which areas have reported failure, what possible alternative policies exist, and what the expectations are for Thailand's future. In assessing Thailand's performance, the research seeks to uncover if contributions of FDI to gross domestic product and employment growth varies across sectors. Generally, it is assumed there is room for improvement in all sectors, which can be validated by assessing the structural weaknesses in Thailand's financial system and determining if this has any impact on the country's infrastructure, education and health. It is thought that these measures will improve human capital, increase absorptive capacity, and thereby enhance the overall spill over effects of FDI.

In less than two decades, successive structural, regulatory and economic reforms have propelled Georgia from one of the poorest post-Soviet states to an upper-middle income economy. Georgia ranks among the best performers in the world according to international indices on doing business and openness to foreign investment - achievements many countries look to for inspiration. Yet in recent years, the Georgian government has reflected on why these reforms have not facilitated more broad-based economic growth. FDI attraction has been strong relative to the size of the Georgian economy, but the positive benefits of investment have not been fully realised. Mobilising investment in sectors that can enhance job creation, exports and productivity will be key for Georgia's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. This Investment Policy Review takes stock of recent achievements in improving the investment climate and assesses areas for the government to consider in strengthening its reform efforts to attract FDI that can have a positive impact on inclusive, sustainable growth.
