Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Ancient India is an analytical study of the economic and political concepts embedded in three major ancient Indian texts, viz., the great epic Mahābhārata, Arthaśāstra of Kauṭilya and the most important Dharmaśāstra viz., Manusmṛti. This volume is distributed over three parts with 10 chapters along with an Introduction to start with. Part-I, consisting of two chapters, deals with economic and political concepts respectively as scattered in the gigantic epic Mahābhārata, chapters 3 to 8 of part-II deal with economic, political and espionage concepts delineated in Arthaśāstra of Kauṭilya, and chapters 9 and 10 of part-III deal with economic and political concepts respectively of Manusmṛti. In fact, there are many common aspects pertaining to economic and political concepts embedded in the three great ancient Indian texts. The likely reason, as highlighted in introduction of this volume, is that all these three texts derived their basic concepts pertaining to political economy from a common source that had originated through comprehensive research and studies of great post Vedic scholars. In this volume we have gone into the detail of the concepts pertaining to ancient Indian political economy as embedded in the three texts highlighting the common aspects and differences on account of the varying objective conditions at the time of composition of each text. This essence of ancient Indian political economy lies in the concept of trivarga (three basic objectives of mundane life), viz., dharma, artha and kāma. In fact, harmonious and sustainable development of human society with equity and social-economic-political justice can be ensured only if there is a perfect balance between the three basic objectives of mundane life, viz., dharma (ethics and noble human values), artha (means to fulfill earthly desires) and kāma (earthly desires). The imbalance in human civilization and all the consequent maladies like inequality, exploitation, poverty etc. arise because of imbalance between the three basic objectives, to be specific emphasis on artha and kāma keeping aside dharma. So, the essence of teachings of ancient Indian śāstras is that while pursuing the objectives pertaining to artha and kāma, we ought to restore dharma to its rightful place to bring about a world free from all its maladies. The present volume endeavours, in essence, to bring to the fore this salient feature of ancient Indian world outlook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Indian economic thought provides rich insights into both economic issues and the workings of the Indian mind. A History of Indian Economic Thought provides the first overview of economic thought in the sub-continent. Arguing that it would be inappropriate to rely on formal economic analyses it draws on a wide range of sources; epics, religious and moral texts for the early period and public speeches, addresses, and newspaper articles for controversies from the nineteenth century onwards. What emerges is a rich mosaic reflecting India's different cultures and civilizations. Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam all address economic issues and British colonial rule had a deep impact, both in propagating Western economic ideas and in provoking Indian theories of colonialism and underdevelopment. The author concludes with chapters on Ghandian economics and on Indian economic thought since Independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general perception exists that ancient Indian literature on economic matters is fatalistic and an admixture of sacred and secular thoughts. Economic Sutra provides a comprehensive perspective on the elements of Indian economic thought leading up to and after the Arthashastra. Economic Sutra is a perception-correction initiative to distil the Indian mind in the realm of economic thoughts and behaviour as brought out by the ancient Indian authors. It highlights the broader spread of economic ideas both prior to and sometime after Kautilya, giving insights into the purpose, actions and vision of our forefathers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Political Economy of Indigo in India, 1580-1930: A Global Perspective Ghulam A. Nadri explores the dynamics of the indigo industry and trade from a long-term perspective and examines the local and global forces that affected the potentialities of production in India and elsewhere and caused periods of boom and slump in the industry. Using the commodity chains conceptual framework he examines the stages in the trajectory of indigo from production to consumption. Nadri shows convincingly that the growth or decline in indigo production and trade in India was a part of the global processes of production, trade, and consumption and that indigo as a global commodity was embedded in the politics of empire and colonial expansion.

Book excerpt: This book, the first of two volumes, explores India’s economic development from 5000BC through to the India’s independence period from 1947AD to 2022AD. The specific characteristics of economic development in India are examined to help determine development paths India can pursue to create sustainable development in the 21st century. The transition from the primary section to the secondary sector, through the process of industrialisation and in turn the move towards the services sector, is discussed in relation to climate change and the pressure on resources posed by population growth. This book aims to contextualise India’s economic development within the political economy of trade, sustainable development and culture with a particular focus on the institutions that have emerged in the Indian sub-continent since 5000BC. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in economic history, development economics, and the political economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from the death of Alexander the Great to the rise of the Islam (c. late fourth century BCE to seventh century CE) saw a significant growth in economic, diplomatic and cultural exchange between various civilisations in Africa, Europe and Asia. This was in large part thanks to the Indian Ocean trade. Peoples living in the Roman Empire, Parthia, India and South East Asia increasingly had access to exotic foreign products, while the lands from which they derived, and the peoples inhabiting these lands, also captured the imagination, finding expression in a number of literary and poetic works. The Indian Ocean Trade in Antiquity provides a range of chapters that explore the economic, political and cultural impact of this trade on these diverse societies, written by international experts working in the fields of Classics, Archaeology, South Asian studies, Near Eastern studies and Art History. The three major themes of the book are the development of this trade, how consumption and exchange impacted on societal developments, and how the Indian Ocean trade influenced the literary creations of Graeco-Roman and Indian authors. This volume will be of interest not only to academics and students of antiquity, but also to scholars working on later periods of Indian Ocean history who will find this work a valuable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a new and original venture to make an interpretation of the phenomenon of under-development in India. Such an endeavour had not been undertaken by social scientists in the past, and this work is a path-breaking effort by this author. The nature and causes of underdevelopment and backwardness in India, which came under British domination, in spite of the historic background of this country with ancient glory and spiritual history, had been subjected to scientific investigation in this research work. The theoretical contributions of Francois Perroux (1903-1987), the French economist of world reputation, is a special characteristic of this research work. The British domination and the establishment of the British empire had been interpreted by the utilisation of the ideas of Francois Perroux. This is a very special feature of this research work. The author had worked in close collaboration with this economist in Paris for several years. The features of Hinduism in India in relation to the precipitation of under-development is also a special feature of this research work. Political economy as a theme of research endeavour had not taken shape in India at the present epoch. Hence, this endeavour has such a major claim also for this special feature in finding out the causes of backwardness of this ancient country. The features of colonialism which was established in this land are traced in depth while the religious features are given due importance.
