This book was released on 2007-09-17 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Silvia Pedraza links Cuba's revolution and its mass exodus not only as cause and consequence but also as profoundly social and human processes that were not only political and economic but also cognitive and emotive. But, ironically for a community that defined itself as being in exile, virtually no studies of its political attitudes exist, and certainly none that encompass the changing political attitudes over 47 years of the exodus. The book uses participant observation and in-depth interviews to gain insight into the political disaffection of Cuban refugees.
Book Synopsis Revolutions in Cuba and Venezuela by : Silvia Pedraza
Download or read book Revolutions in Cuba and Venezuela written by Silvia Pedraza and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparing two consequential movements that shed light on the nature of revolution Revolutions in Cuba and Venezuela compares the sociopolitical processes behind two major revolutions—those of Cuba in 1959, when Fidel Castro came to power, and Venezuela in 1999, when Hugo Chávez won the presidential election. With special attention to the Cuba-Venezuela alliance, particularly in regards to foreign policy and the trade of doctors for oil, Silvia Pedraza and Carlos Romero show that the geopolitical theater where these events played out determined the dynamics and reach of the revolutions. Updating and enriching the current understanding of the Cuban and Venezuelan revolutions, this study is unique in its focus on the massive exoduses they generated. Pedraza and Romero argue that this factor is crucial for comprehending a revolution’s capacity to succeed or fail. By externalizing dissent, refugees helped to consolidate the revolutions, but as the diasporas became significant political actors and the lifelines of each economy, they eventually served to undermine the social movements. Using comparative historical analysis and data collected through fieldwork in Cuba and Venezuela, as well as from immigrant communities in the US, Pedraza and Romero discuss issues of politics, economics, migrations, authoritarianism, human rights, and democracy in two nations that hoped to make a better world through their revolutionary journeys. Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as the University of Michigan's Office of Research Publication Subvention Award.
Book Synopsis The Revolution Is for the Children by : Anita Casavantes Bradford
Download or read book The Revolution Is for the Children written by Anita Casavantes Bradford and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1959, the Cuban revolutionary government has proudly proclaimed that "the revolution is for the children." Many Cuban Americans reject this claim, asserting that they chose exile in the United States to protect their children from the evils of "Castro-communism." Anita Casavantes Bradford's analysis of the pivotal years between the Revolution's triumph and the 1962 Missile Crisis uncovers how and when children were first pressed into political service by ideologically opposed Cuban communities on both sides of the Florida Straits. Casavantes Bradford argues that, in Havana, the Castro government deployed a morally charged "politics of childhood" to steer a nationalist and reformist revolution toward socialism. At the same time, Miami exile leaders put children at the heart of efforts to mobilize opposition to Castro's regime and to link the well-being of Cuban refugees to U.S. Cold War foreign policy objectives. Casavantes Bradford concludes that the 1999 Elian Gonzalez custody battle was the most notorious recent manifestation of the ongoing struggle to define and control Cuban childhood, revealing the persistent centrality of children to Cuban politics and national identity.

While this is a work of historical fiction, everything is well-documented, providing a provocative and in-depth look at key players in the revolution. Meet Che Guevara, Camilo Cienfuegos, Celia Sanchez and many others. Says author Walter A. Carmona, I was born in New York to Cuban and Italian immigrants. I earned degrees in political science and secondary education at Florida Atlantic University. When my mother passed away when I was age four, I was sent to Cuba during the revolutionary years to live with my eventual stepmother, Norma Busot-Ramos, who had been Fidel's secretary as well as engaged to one of his closest friends and mentor, Abel Santamaria. After receiving Norma's memoirs, I began to be inspired by the beauty, art, music and politics of Cuba.Having lived in Cuba during the revolution and having been surrounded by the revolutionaries in Fidel's inner circle, I bring a keen insight and personal reality to the subject of Fidel and the Cuban revolution. My closeness to the revolution and its players allows me to delve into the who, what, where and when of this controversial subject. Walter A. Carmona is a retired high school teacher. He left Cuba in 1963. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/WalterACarmon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the triumphs and failures of race relations within the Castro regime, this book challenges arguments that the regime eliminated racial inequality or that it was profoundly racist. Through interviews, historical materials, and survey research, it provides a balanced view that demonstrates how much of Cuban racial ideology was actually left unchanged by the revolution. Finally, the book maintains that despite these shortcomings, the regime remains popular among the black minorities because they perceive their alternatives in the U.S. within the Miami Exile community to be far worse.

Book excerpt: In 1960, Cuban photographer Alberto Korda captured fabled revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara in what has become history's most reproduced photo. Here Michael Casey tells the remarkable story of this image, detailing its evolution from a casual snapshot to an omnipresent graphic—plastered on everything from T-shirts to vodka to condoms—and into a copyrighted brand. As Casey follows it across the Americas and through cyberspace, he finds governments exploiting it and their dissenters attacking it, merchants selling it and tourists buying it. We see how this image is, ultimately, a mercurial icon that still ignites passion—and a reflection of how we view ourselves.
