Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Destiny of Canada I have reason to believe that some persons would like to have the Essay on the Political Destiny of Canada, which forms the principal part of this volume, and which is reprinted from the Fortnightly Review, in a more convenient form than a back number of the periodical in which it appeared. I take the opportunity of replying to some criticisms of Sir Francis Hincks. Sir Francis allows me to insert his paper, so that, if there is any poison in my Opinions, the antidote will be found beside the bane. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Destiny of Canada: Being Determined by Its Financial Policy A few months ago it required boldness on any man's part to utter the word annexation, unless he at once denounced the unpatriotic expression. Professor Goldwin Smith discoursed on the matter, dealing mainly in theories, and drawing deductions. Sir Francis Hincks' and lesser men could only meet him with one assertion: The sentiment of the Canadian people is against it. Unquestionably they were right; but recent events have shewn that the senti ment of attachment to Great Britain was not so deep and strong as many had supposed. The money question coming on, we made it evident that we were not prepared to pay a heavy price for British connection. From that it is only fair to reason that if any other alliances could be made to appear more profit able, we should be prepared to consider them. At any rate it appears to me that our past and present mode of financing can have but one result, which will appear when I have laid my facts and figures before the public. For any Opinions expressed, the writer is alone responsible - the spectator is not committed in any way. I will begin with Canadian finances. His Conservatives had dominated Canadian politics since Confederation. Their National Policy, which protected Canadian manufacturers from foreign competition, was well established and affection for the "Old Man" was deep and widespread. The Liberal leader, Wilfrid Laurier, was new in the job and uncertain that a Roman Catholic from Quebec had any chance of winning votes outside his home province. But Macdonald's decision to hang Louis Riel had split the country, the economy was in the doldrums, and a movement in support of free trade with the United States gave the Liberals hope. In this richly textured narrative, Christopher Pennington spins a colourful tale of a country poised to make a momentous choice and of nineteenth century politics both at its most principled and at its most corrupt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is changing - geopolitically and economically - at an alarmingly fast pace. Populism, protectionism, and authoritarianism are on the rise. Braver Canada analyzes these and many other global shifts, offering provocative prescriptions for both the public and the private sectors. Reviewing the foreign policy challenges, achievements, and missteps of the Justin Trudeau government, Derek Burney and Fen Hampson argue that the country's leadership must craft a new approach to global affairs based on a solid grasp of current and emerging global political and economic realities. They focus on competitiveness, trade, energy, environment, and immigration and refugee issues, also discussing a recalibration of relations with China and India. Expanding on the ideas and policy recommendations in their previous book, Brave New Canada, which called for Canada to diversify its economic ties outside the United States, they note how the global and regional environment has shifted dramatically in recent years. A timely and compelling analysis, Braver Canada lays out the challenges for Canada in a rapidly changing, turbulent world and the strategies required for future prosperity.

Book excerpt: A political biography extraordinaire, Elusive Destiny reveals the inner workings of the Liberal Party in its heyday as charted through the meteoric rise and fall of John Napier Turner. It highlights Turner’s vision for the country and tallies the political price he paid when he deviated from the Trudeau legacy on matters such as language rights, social spending, and Quebec. It also provides a new perspective on federal politics from the 1960s through the 1980s while giving John Turner his rightful place in Canadian history.
