Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political and Constitutional Law of the United States of America The principles fundamental to political self-government, should doubtless be clearly understood by every vo'rnn or macros. For his status, in this country, is no less than that of one of a body of absolute sovereigns.l The three fundamentally different and mu tually opposing theories of our political system, - one or another of which every voter must necessarily sanction, and consequently, -one or another of which must furnish the key to every administra tion of government, state and federal, - are therefore severally and distinctly presented, so that every voter may judge for himself, as he ought to do, which of these theories should receive his assent and support. Attention is also directed to the different foundations of govern ment, to the rise and development of the system peculiar to Amer ica, to the sovereign legislation by the People themselves from the dawn of the Revolution to the xvth Amendment, and to the views and doctrines of the original framers of our Constitutions; ever so little reflection upon which will enable any voter to form his own independent opinion, regardless of partisan strifes, and to cast his vote with a clear understanding of what it involves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional Law of the United States of America It is not necessary further to enlarge upon these pomts, for what I have said is sufficient to show why the first inquiries with regard to a translation of the treatise were not received by me with a feeling of unmixed satisfac tion. I not only could have dived deeper, and would have done so, if I had intended to write for Americans, but even if I had confined myself to a mere sketch, the perspective would have been somewhat different. Be sides, the treatise had to be written at a time when I could not go either to England or the United States. Book excerpt: United States Constitutional History and Law is a text written by Albert Putney, who was an accomplished academic, a lawyer, and a lecturer at the Illinois College of Law. This title presents a detailed overview of the American constitution. United States Constitutional History and Law is a celebration of the creation of the supreme law that is the very foundation of the United States of America. Putney presents the reader with a detailed history of the establishment of the constitution as well as an analysis of the document's most notable principles. After a brief introduction, the author begins the examination in earnest. Putney commences by detailing the political and legal history of the thirteen colonies prior to the first constitutional convention. The book then details the convention and its major outcomes, and includes a lengthy discussion of the division of powers between the states and the country as a whole. The separate departments of the federal government are profiled, and the Bill of Rights is described in depth. The book concludes with a history, up until 1908, of the amendments made to the constitution. United States Constitutional History and Law is an exhaustive and exceptional history book. Putney was a brilliant academic, and his deep knowledge of the subject matter shines through on every page of this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constitutional Government in the United States MY object in the following lectures-is to examine the government of the United States as a constitutional system as Simply and directly as possible, with an eye to practice, not to theory. And yet at the very outset it is necessary to pause upon a theory. The government of the United States cannot be intelligently discussed as a constitutional system until we clearly determine what we mean by a constitutional government; and the answer to that question is in effect a theory of politics. Book Synopsis The Constitution of the United States by : Thomas James Norton
Download or read book The Constitution of the United States written by Thomas James Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans of all political points of view often discuss the U.S. Constitution, but how well do they really know the document and its history? The Constitution the United States: Its Sources and Its Application gives the reader a crash course in the text of the Constitution and its sources. Thomas James Norton was a lawyer who argued before several high courts of appeals, and in this book his goal is to provide an annotated copy of the U.S Constitution so that readers could better understand the reason for each section. As Norton's annotations make clear, one cannot understand the Constitution without understanding the basics of the earlier 'Articles of Confederation', its strengths and weaknesses and why it ultimately failed. The Articles created a weak central government, which The Constitution sought to rectify without tipping the balance too strongly in favour of a mighty centralised government. The footnotes reveal the debate and compromise which led to the passage of each individual clause. Key historical moments, such as the reign of King Charles I of England and the Short Parliament, are added to the text to explain how they shaped the attitudes of the men who wrote the Constitution. Norton also discuses the governments of Australia, France, Canada and Brazil for comparative purposes, which really enriches the experience for readers who are not well versed in comparative government. These explanations are brief, which keeps the book moving at a brisk pace. Norton occasionally expresses strong opinions about historical events which may not be in line with how American constitutional history actually unfolded in the future, but his opinions do not interfere with the usefulness of the book. The Constitution the United States: Its Sources and Its Application is not overly technical and does not rely strictly on legal language. This makes the book digestible by everyone, from lawyers to historians to people interested in politics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Story of the Constitution of the United States (Classic Reprint) written by Francis Newton Thorpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States The story of the Constitution is of truth stranger than fie tion. It is natural to attribute to an institution throughout its history that reputation which it bears in our own day. Many men are yet living who remember with startling dis tinctness a time when the Constitution seemed merely a piece of parchment; when the fate of the nation was as uncertain as the course of battle; when stern necessity compelled so liberal an interpretation of the supreme law of the land that states men refrained from forming conclusions on the tendency Of national administration, and, looking hopefully forward, sought new meanings in events where before they had sought interpretation by a construction Of words. Then, and not till then, in our history was the Constitution of the United States understood in its spirit as being the expression of the nation's mind, Whatever that mind might be. But no man now living can remember the angry days when the Constitu tion was yet a hope or a proposition debated between jealous States and still more jealous political leaders. NO one can re member the living opinions which, at the close of the eight eenth century, so nearly triumphed, and whose triumph would have dissolved a feeble union of States and encouraged the horrors of an anarchy only possible in a democracy. When the Opinions on national government in America to-day and opinions Of a century ago are contrasted, it is difficult to be lieve that we are the children of our fathers.
