Download or read book Migrations written by Mary Gilmartin and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores Ireland’s complex relationship with migration in novel and innovative ways. The contributors – leading scholars of migration from the disciplines of anthropology, geography, history, media studies, sociology, sociolinguistics and women’s studies – draw on new research to provide insights into emigration from and immigration to Ireland, both past and present. The chapters, which range from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, cover topics as diverse as migrant women and children in Ireland, the role of the Irish Catholic in migration networks, and recent Irish migration to Australia. They are organised around three cross-cutting themes: networks, belonging and intersections. They focus on the migratory process rather than on migration as a uni-directional movement of people. Though centred on Ireland, the collection has broader implications for the ways in which migration is conceptualised. The collection will appeal to scholars of migration and Irish studies, and to readers with backgrounds in a range of social science and humanities disciplines, including geography and sociology.
Book Synopsis Emotions from a Bilingual Point of View by : Katarzyna Ożańska-Ponikwia
Download or read book Emotions from a Bilingual Point of View written by Katarzyna Ożańska-Ponikwia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a particularly important area of second language acquisition research, specifically the factors that mediate learning outcomes in learning a second or foreign language. It provides a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of studies in the field of second language learning and L2 use from the point of view of personality traits and emotional intelligence. It also presents results of a mixed-method study researching the possible influence of these variables on the process of learning a second language. Furthermore, the book represents the first systematic exploration of the role of emotional intelligence and the factors related to it in moderating attainment in the target language. What is also unique here is the investigation of the role of personality with respect to different target language skills and subsystems, which allows finer-grained insights into this relationship. The book will be of considerable interest to both researchers, teachers and students in the fields of SLA, TESOL, applied linguistics, and bilingualism.
Book Synopsis London's Polish Borders by : Michal P. Garapich
Download or read book London's Polish Borders written by Michal P. Garapich and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the Polish plumber or builder has long been a well-established icon of the British national imagination, uncovering the UK's collective unease with immigration from Central and Eastern Europe. But despite the powerful impact the UK's second largest language group has had on their host country's culture and politics, very little is known about its members. This painstakingly researched book offers a broad perspective on Polish migrants in the UK, taking into account discursive actions, policies, family connections, transnational networks, and political engagement of the diaspora. Born out of a decade of ethnographic studies among various communities of Polish nationals living in London, Michal P. Garapich documents the changes affecting both Polish migrants and British society, offering insight into the inner tensions and struggles within what is often assumed to be a uniform and homogeneous category. From Polish financial sector workers to the Polish homeless population, this groundbreaking book provides a street-level account of cultural and social determinants of Polish migrants as they continually rework their relation to class and ethnicity.
Book Synopsis Polish Club 2020 by : Krzysztof Jassem
Download or read book Polish Club 2020 written by Krzysztof Jassem and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motto of the Polish Club 2020 Expert system is: 'Bid aggressively with an offensive hand, keep quiet with a defensive hand.' Non-vulnerable one-level light openings and responses are introduced here. But the main merit of the Polish Club, i.e. to 'keep an eye on the total strength of the bidders', is still preserved. In comparison to other versions of Polish Club (including Polish Club 2020 Standard), the meaning of the 2C opening has been changed. The Precision approach has been dropped, and replaced by the major two-suiter. This treatment, added to weak two-suited openings, makes the system's two-level openings very aggressive. And this brings IMPs and matchpoints! The spectrum of conventions in uncontested and competitive auctions is richer than in any other version of the Polish Club system. Some novel ideas (such as Cheap Transfer) are universal enough to be applied in any bidding system.

The volume explores the role of public institutions in the politics of integration and cultural diversity, analyzing their efforts to further the inclusion of racial and ethnic minority populations. Emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural knowledge and exchange, global case studies examine the conflicts inherent in such efforts, considering key issues such as whether to focus on origins or destinations, as well as whether assimilation, integration, or an entirely new model would be the most effective approach. This collection provides an insight into diverse perspectives, not only of museum practitioners and scholars, but also the voices of artists, visitors, undocumented immigrants, and other members of source communities. Global Mobilities is an often provocative and thought-inspiring resource which offers a comprehensive overview of the field for those interested in understanding its complexities.

Book Synopsis Soviet Soft Power in Poland by : Patryk Babiracki
Download or read book Soviet Soft Power in Poland written by Patryk Babiracki and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the formative years of the Cold War from 1943 to 1957, Patryk Babiracki reveals little-known Soviet efforts to build a postwar East European empire through culture. Babiracki argues that the Soviets involved in foreign cultural outreach tried to use "soft power" in order to galvanize broad support for the postwar order in the emerging Soviet bloc. Populated with compelling characters ranging from artists, writers, journalists, and scientists to party and government functionaries, this work illuminates the behind-the-scenes schemes of the Stalinist international propaganda machine. Based on exhaustive research in Russian and Polish archives, Babiracki's study is the first in any language to examine the two-way interactions between Soviet and Polish propagandists and to evaluate their attempts at cultural cooperation. Babiracki shows that the Stalinist system ultimately undermined Soviet efforts to secure popular legitimacy abroad through persuasive propaganda. He also highlights the limitations and contradictions of Soviet international cultural outreach, which help explain why the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe crumbled so easily after less than a half-century of existence.
Book Synopsis The Multilingual Adolescent Experience by : Malgorzata Machowska-Kosciak
Download or read book The Multilingual Adolescent Experience written by Malgorzata Machowska-Kosciak and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to our understanding of how older learners negotiate family internal and family external socialisation processes and thereby how parents’ ideologies and practices, peer socialisation, and language status or societal demands come together in adolescents’ lives. It integrates the sociohistorical context and adolescents’ attitudes with the parents’ role. Through the use of ‘small stories’ and ethnographic observation this book explores the social and cultural worlds of Polish immigrant adolescents in Ireland, the ways they seek membership and belonging in their communities of practice, and the ways in which they develop sociohistorical understandings across the languages and cultures they are part of. It sheds light on schooling and family communities and the role they play in the socialization processes of immigrant children.

Book Synopsis Under the Red Banner by : Elvira Grözinger
Download or read book Under the Red Banner written by Elvira Grözinger and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2008 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of European Yiddish speaking Jews was murdered by Hitler's National Socialists, their cultural realm was destroyed. After the war, the Communist regimes suppressed Jewish culture, but despite emigration of Jewish survivors, small Jewish communities continued to exist and made efforts to revive their culture in most of the Communist countries. Jewish organizations, clubs, cultural societies and theatres were founded, and a great number of Yiddish books, newspapers and periodicals were printed, despite political pressure, hostility and persecution. The cultural activity which developed "under the red banner" cannot of course be compared to the immense impact the Yiddish culture experienced before the Second World War but it was an important phenomenon in Jewish history which remained uninvestigated for a long time and has not been described in a proper way until today. This volume of seventeen essays is a collection of papers delivered by scholars from the USA, Sweden, Israel, Germany and Poland at the conference on Yiddish Culture in the Communists Countries in the Postwar Era which was organized at the Jagiellonian University Cracow in cooperation with the University of Potsdam in November 2006.
