Book Synopsis Anatomic Atlas of Aquatic and Wetland Plant Stems by : Fritz H. Schweingruber
Download or read book Anatomic Atlas of Aquatic and Wetland Plant Stems written by Fritz H. Schweingruber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents light microscopic anatomical images of aquatic and wetland plant stem. It features double-stained cross- and longitudinal sections of almost 400 species of vascular plants from the lowland to the alpine zone in Central Europe, including plants from lakes, ponds, rivers, bogs, fens, wet meadows, saline meadows, tall herb associations and alpine snow beds. The microscopic photographs at various magnifications are supplemented with detailed anatomical descriptions. For each species it provides a photo of the whole plant, a short morphological and ecological description as well as indications about its world- and Central European distribution. The book includes a hydrobotanical and an anatomical section. The hydrobotanical section describes the ecological classification of aquatic and wetland plants and explains major ecophysiological processes e.g., photosynthesis, mineral nutrition, gas exchange, adaptations to soil anoxia, turion formation and ecology. The anatomical section highlights the variety of structures and anatomical features of vascular plants in all wet environments.
Book Synopsis The 33 Threatened Fungi in Europe by : Anders Dahlberg
Download or read book The 33 Threatened Fungi in Europe written by Anders Dahlberg and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Europe has a high diversity of fungi and many species are threatened, no fungal species are yet included in the appendices of the Bern Convention or the EU Habitats Directive. Conservation action has often neglected fungi due in part to past insufficient knowledge of their ecology, distribution and status. This report, which contains very detailed information on 33 species threatened in Europe, was originally prepared as a list of candidate species for protection at the European level. They certainly deserve the attention of conservation agencies

Book Synopsis Plant and Vegetation Mapping by : Franco Pedrotti
Download or read book Plant and Vegetation Mapping written by Franco Pedrotti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is concerned principally with geobotanical mapping. Geobotany is a broad science that deals with the study of species and of vegetation communities in relation to the environment; it includes other, perhaps more familiar sciences, such as plant geography, plant ecology, and chorology, and phytosociology (plant sociology). Geobotanical cartography is a field of thematic cartography that deals with the interpretation and representation, in the form of maps, of those spatial and temporal phenomena that pertain to flora, vegetation, vegetated landscapes, vegetation zones, and phytogeographical units. The production of a geobotanical map represents the last stage in a cognitive process that begins with observations in the field and continues with the collection of sample data, interpretation of the phenomena observed, and their appropriate cartographic representation; geobotanical cartography is closely tied to the concepts and scope of geobotany in general

Book Synopsis Translating Nature Terminology by : Wojtek Kasprzak
Download or read book Translating Nature Terminology written by Wojtek Kasprzak and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translating Nature Terminology hopes to fill a vacuum in the market, combining practical advice for translators with aspects of linguistics and natural sciences. It is a response to the growing popularity of bilingual (Polish-English) publications on nature in Poland, which, however, abound in mistranslated nature terminology. Using cognitivism-based analysis, it traces the vagaries of categorisation of the natural world within one language as well as interlingually, with a view to helping translators find suitable equivalents of concepts and terms representing them. Translators can learn, for instance, when overspecification, underspecification or domestication are justified and when they become a translation error, what to do with the names of cultivars, or in what context one should render turzycowisko as “tall sedge swamp” and where as “sedge fen.” The book also demonstrates that terminological correctness is not only a must for informative texts but it is often indispensable to ensure the coherence of literary works. It pays particular attention to the penetration of folk terms into specialist texts and vice versa. The reliability of dictionaries, both general and specialist, is called into question and keeping in touch with up-to-date professional sources is recommended instead. All the above claims are thoroughly researched and amply exemplified.
