Book Synopsis Transitional Justice in Poland by : Frances Millard
Download or read book Transitional Justice in Poland written by Frances Millard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the mechanisms of transitional justice in Poland, Frances Millard asks: How does society come to terms with its past? How should it punish the perpetrators of oppression and acknowledge its victims? In the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe the task of answering these questions came down to the need to eliminate the communist parties' hold over the state, the economy and society in order to move towards democracy. Millard argues that the key step in achieving this was uncovering the truth about the previous regime's past, prosecuting the perpetrators of past crimes and providing compensation and restitution for its victims. Through the specific case of Poland, Millard provides a comprehensive assessment of the mechanisms and institutions used to achieve this, such as lustration, law enforcement through a Constitutional Tribunal and institutions dedicated to dealing with the past such as the Institute of National Remembrance. Crucially, these processes have assumed new significance in recent years after the Law and Justice Party came to power in 2015, using transitional justice as a tool of political control which has enabled the restructuring of Polish democracy.
Book Synopsis Democracy In Poland by : Raymond Taras
Download or read book Democracy In Poland written by Raymond Taras and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-changing election rules, a highly fluid party system, a constitution considered illegitimate by more than one major political actor, polarized political elites, and a system of corruption that has grown up together with the young democracy itself -these characterize contemporary Polish politics. At the same time Poland is frequently identified as the most successful example of a transition from communism to capitalism, having led this series of world-changing transitions. It has distanced itself from a turbulent history as pawn in Eastern Europe's international politics to become a leading candidate for membership in the exclusive European Union club. As Polish democratic politics evolves it is taking unexpected forms and producing equally unexpected results. Through a comprehensive analysis of politics in this young European democracy, Marjorie Castle and Ray Taras explain the complexity and uncertainty of political processes and outcomes in Poland. Poland'spast -the flawed Second Republic established after World War I, as well as the imperfect independence in the Soviet shadow following World War II's devastation - dramatizes the unique historic opportunity it was given in 1989 to determine its own political future and perhaps eventually become a major European power. Choices made in 1989 and thereafter would not only construct a new democracy but shape and limit its possibilities. The primary focus here is on contemporary politics: what the fundamental political cleavages are, whether parties adequately represent popular interests, who the political elites are and what games they play, whatinfluence the Catholic Church still holds in an aspiring Western-style secular republic, and what policy challenges face Poland in the future. Inimitable political leaders, changing political arenas, and complexpolicy-making processes come to life through a fascinating narrative characterized by an insider's insight.
Book Synopsis Poland in the Single Market by : Anna Visvizi
Download or read book Poland in the Single Market written by Anna Visvizi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By all accounts, the case of Poland and its segue to market economy and democracy is a success story: 30 years of uninterrupted growth and development, infrastructure expansion, and modernization of the economy and society. Epochal changes have unfolded in a timespan of merely three decades. Change has taken place so fast that children born in late 1980s and onwards cannot remember what life in Poland under communism was like and cannot relate to it. Also, many elderly people, easy victims of romanticizing their own youth, tend to forget. As a result, the uniqueness of Polish transition and transformation, the boldness and efficiency of reforms, and the success that Polish society mastered together, tend to be undermined today both domestically and internationally. Poland has now been a member of the EU for more than 15 years. During that time, Poland’s image on the EU scene evolved from newcomer, through ‘model child’, champion of growth, to – in some respects – a maverick. This volume’s objective is to remind society, old and young, researchers, scholars and practitioners, that Poland’s success is an outcome of well-thought out and bold structural reforms implemented in a swift and timely manner, of society’s support for these reforms, and of third actors’ benign assistance. Looking back on the 30 years since the collapse of communism, and at the over 15 years of EU membership, this book offers an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and critical insight into factors and processes that have led to today’s Poland.

Download or read book Veterans, Victims, and Memory written by Joanna Wawrzyniak and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vast literature on how the Second World War has been remembered in Europe, research into what happened in communist Poland, a country most affected by the war, is surprisingly scarce. The long gestation of Polish narratives of heroism and sacrifice, explored in this book, might help to understand why the country still finds itself in a -mnemonic standoff- with Western Europe, which tends to favour imagining the war in a civil, post-Holocaust, human rights-oriented way. The specific focus of this book is the organized movement of war veterans and former prisoners of Nazi camps from the 1940s until the end of the 1960s, when the core narratives of war became well established."
Book Synopsis Old and New Cleavages in Polish Society by : Guérot, Ulrike
Download or read book Old and New Cleavages in Polish Society written by Guérot, Ulrike and published by Edition Donau-Universität Krems. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is happening in Poland? Where is Poland heading? Is Polish society as divided as it is often perceived? How did we get there? What do anti-pluralist tendencies and a gender-backlash mean for the everyday life in Poland? What are possible ways to cope with this? And what are the consequences for Europe? This anthology is the result of a conference which took place in Vienna in April 2018 and offers some insight into debates taking place in and around Poland today. The contributions are very different in expression and stand for themselves. In this respect, the book offers impressions, but no "solutions". It offers suggestions to reflect on Poland in a new or different way, which help to understand Poland and the complex social and political processes that are currently underway.
Book Synopsis Environmental Politics in Poland by : Barbara E. Hicks
Download or read book Environmental Politics in Poland written by Barbara E. Hicks and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text examines the development of the Polish environmental movement as a lens through which to understand the reconstruction of civil society and the adaptation of a social movement to new political institutions. The book focuses on the period between Solidarity's formation in 1980 and the first years after the establishment of a Solidarity-led government in 1989. It argues that environmental groups, as a form of independent collective action aimed at changing official policies and institutions, were part of the larger social transformations that undermined communist rule.

Book excerpt: In the 1980s and 90s, renowned Polish economist Tadeusz Kowalik played a leading role in the Solidarity movement, struggling alongside workers for an alternative to "really-existing socialism" that was cooperative and controlled by the workers themselves. In the ensuing two decades, "really-existing" socialism has collapsed, capitalism has been restored, and Poland is now among the most unequal countries in the world. Kowalik asks, how could this happen in a country that once had the largest and most militant labor movement in Europe? This book takes readers inside the debates within Solidar
