This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook illustrates that universities per se and higher education in general are essential to catalyze and action the transformative change needed for sustainability and delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. Part One shows how sustainability can be adopted as a driver of change within higher education institutions (HEIs), as they react and respond to influencing factors outside the academy. Part Two examines how a university working with and for sustainability can influence, effect and amplify change beyond the institution, working with and through others. International contributors explore regional, national and international perspectives, presenting a variety of critically assessed accounts case studies that reflect different local and national contexts, institutional archetypes and academic missions. Frameworks of sustainability-led transformation are illustrated at the level of the institution (executive/administrative), organization, culture, place-based (anchor) and student in various countries including Aruba, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Lebanon, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, Uganda, United Kingdom and the United States of America. The book concludes with a manifesto for change and a call to action. It identifies that the sustainability journey of a HEI is influenced by context and place, with mission, leadership and strategy playing a vital role and change agency by students a key ingredient. Recognizing the patience and resolve to effect change, communication, dialogue and inclusion were central to community building and partnership.

Book Synopsis Farming, Forestry and the Natural Heritage by : Richard Davison
Download or read book Farming, Forestry and the Natural Heritage written by Richard Davison and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-07-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been significant changes to farming and forestry, and new strategies for agriculture, forestry and biodiversity have been launched. The influence of farming and forestry on Scotland's landscapes is seen as increasingly important, and new access rights have been put in place by the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. Although these changes bring uncertainty and challenges, they also bring a major opportunity to move decisively towards integrating landscape, biodiversity and recreational objectives in land management. This book takes stock of the changes taking places and considers a number of case studies, which together suggest that progress is being made, looks ahead at future research and advisory needs, and highlights some key challenges to achieving better integration in the future.
Book Synopsis Streamlining Farm Oversight by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book Streamlining Farm Oversight written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) has made some progress in following up the recommendations of the Farming Regulation Task Force, which called for a new approach to the culture of regulation. But farmers consider the rate of improvement continues to be slow. Eighty-four per cent of farmers surveyed believe oversight bodies should co-ordinate their activity more. The cost of complying with regulations is on average around a tenth of a farm's net profit. The NAO estimates that, during 2011-12, nine separate government bodies made at least 114,000 visits to English farms. More than half of these were to carry out disease surveillance and testing and 30 per cent to check for farmers' compliance, at a total cost of £47 million. The bodies inspecting farms often collect the same information separately and there is only limited sharing of intelligence which would help with the better targeting of resources. The current approach will not deliver the scale of change expected by the sector, and contrasts with the progress made in Scotland where oversight bodies have come together to identify redundant activity and cut one in six farm visits. Defra has not collected sufficient data to understand the scale, nature, and effectiveness of English farm oversight activity. It does not routinely collect or analyse data on the overall number and pattern of farm visits, or on levels of compliance across all regulatory regimes. Alternatives to physical inspections might be more widely adopted as a way of improving compliance.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on British Rural Planning Policy, 1994-97 by : Andrew W. Gilg
Download or read book Perspectives on British Rural Planning Policy, 1994-97 written by Andrew W. Gilg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume explores the issue of rural planning, which has become a complex activity in which policies in one area have important ramifications in other policy areas. It is thus very important for all those involved in rural planning affairs to remain not only up to date, but to place recent developments in a longer perspective. This new series aims to answer all these needs by providing an accurate and informed account of recent developments in North American, British and European rural policy, and critiques of policy implementation and its impacts from new material and from analyses of published research findings. This second volume in the series covers the last few years of the John Major administration until the election of the Tony Blair government in May 1997. It is divided into six chapters: overview of changes affecting all rural planning activities; the environment; town and country planning; extensive land uses; nature conservation and recreation; and social land economic issues. The next British volume will cover the entire period of the current government, with successive volumes covering each new government as it unfolds.

Book Synopsis Governing Integrated Water Resources Management by : Oliver Fritsch
Download or read book Governing Integrated Water Resources Management written by Oliver Fritsch and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has become a global paradigm for the governance of surface, coastal and groundwaters. This Special Issue contains twelve articles related to the transfer of IWRM policy principles. The articles explore three dimensions of transfer—causes, processes, outcomes—and offer a theoretically inspiring, methodologically rich and geographically diverse engagement with IWRM policy transfer around the globe. As such, they can also productively inform a future research agenda on the ‘dimensional’ aspects of IWRM governance. Regarding the causes, the contributions apply, criticise, extend or revise existing approaches to policy transfer in a water governance context, asking why countries adopt IWRM principles and what mechanisms are in place to understand the adoption of these principles in regional or national contexts. When it comes to processes, articles in this Special Issue unpack the process of policy transfer and implementation and explore how IWRM principles travel across borders, levels and scales. Finally, this set of papers looks into the outcomes of IWRM policy transfer and asks what impact IWRM principles, once implemented, gave on domestic water governance, water quality and water supply, and how effective IWRM is at addressing critical water issues in specific countries.

Book Synopsis Unconventional Resources in the Oil and Gas Industry by : Eduardo Pereira
Download or read book Unconventional Resources in the Oil and Gas Industry written by Eduardo Pereira and published by Editora Dialética. This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of unconventional oil and gas extraction, known as the "shale revolution", since 2008 has fundamentally reshaped the global energy sector. This revolution, driven by technological advancements in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, has unlocked vast reserves of oil and gas previously deemed inaccessible. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, fluctuating oil prices, and growing environmental concerns, unconventional resources continue to play a pivotal role in shaping energy policies worldwide. This book delves deeply into the transformative impact of unconventional resources on international energy markets and policies, providing a comprehensive analysis of their significance. Written by over 20 experts in oil and gas law, the book offers a rich, multidisciplinary perspective. It covers topics that are "horizontal" and cut across various jurisdictions, providing a comparative approach that spans 11 different countries, including the USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, the UK, Algeria, Libya, China, and Germany. This extensive analysis ensures a broad understanding of the global landscape of unconventional resources. Main themes include: · Global Impact: Unconventional resources have not only transformed the United States into a leading oil and gas producer but have also significantly influenced energy strategies worldwide. Countries across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia have adopted various strategies to harness these resources, reshaping the global energy market. · Policy Considerations: Key policy issues addressed in the book include the environmental and social impacts of unconventional resource extraction. Topics such as water management, the coexistence of drilling operations with other land uses, and the social implications of resource extraction are thoroughly examined. · Legal Framework: The book explores the complex legal landscape governing unconventional operations, delves into stakeholder dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and the intricacies of legal provisions that vary from one jurisdiction to another. · Geographical Analysis: In its second part, the book provides an in-depth analysis of specific country regulations. This section offers comparative insights into the regulatory approaches of eleven countries, highlighting both common challenges and unique strategies. The book concludes by exploring lessons learned and future perspectives within the framework of the energy trilemma—balancing energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic affordability. It emphasizes the transformative impact of unconventional resources on energy independence and security, while also addressing the contentious environmental considerations that accompany such developments. Overall, this book aims to equip readers with a comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory landscape surrounding unconventional oil and gas resources. By examining global experiences and diverse regulatory frameworks, it seeks to inform decision-making processes and promote sustainable development in the unconventional energy sector. The book benefits from critical analyses and comparative descriptive reviews of each country's unique approach, making it an invaluable resource for policymakers, industry professionals, and scholars alike.
