Book excerpt: Five million people in poor countries are receiving AIDS treatment, but international AIDS policy is still in crisis. Donors are giving less than they had been, even though infections continue unabated, and the number of people dependent on treatment rises each year. This book proposes a feasible medium-term objective for AIDS policy: achieving an "AIDS transition," that is, keeping AIDS deaths down by sustaining treatment while pushing new infections even lower, so that the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS begins to decline. How? Through a new, incentive-driven strategy to improve HIV prevention and a sustained effort to get the most from AIDS treatment.

Book excerpt: The Working for Health five-year action plan for health employment and inclusive economic growth (2017–2021) draws on the recommendations of the report of the United Nations High-level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth. It is delivered principally through the joint intersectoral W4H programme and its Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) in partnership with WHO, ILO and OECD. A major part of its objectives is to stimulate workforce actions in alignment with national, regional and global strategies and plans. These actions are delivered at country and regional level through multisectoral Member State-led collaboration and catalytic technical and financial support. Other joint W4H work includes developing and adapting key global public goods, including an international platform for health worker mobility, an interagency data exchange platform, an ILO and OECD approach to anticipating the skills needs of health workers, and a methodology for measuring employment impact. This document presents the findings of an independent end-of-project review of the Working for Health five-year action plan for health employment and inclusive economic growth (2017–2021) Working for Health Multi Partner Trust Fund over the first action plan period. This included direct support to 13 countries, two economic regions and three global projects. The review is based on the evaluation criteria of relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact and sustainability. The review also looks to the future of sustaining investment and support for implementation of subsequent projects under the new Working for Health 2022–2030 Action Plan and its MPTF, which was extended by Member States at the Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly in May 2022.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health is a highly valued, visible, and concrete investment that has the power to both save lives and enhance the credibility of the United States in the eyes of the world. While the United States has made a major commitment to global health, there remains a wide gap between existing knowledge and tools that could improve health if applied universally, and the utilization of these known tools across the globe. The U.S. Commitment to Global Health concludes that the U.S. government and U.S.-based foundations, universities, nongovernmental organizations, and commercial entities have an opportunity to improve global health. The book includes recommendations that these U.S. institutions: increase the utilization of existing interventions to achieve significant health gains; generate and share knowledge to address prevalent health problems in disadvantaged countries; invest in people, institutions, and capacity building with global partners; increase the quantity and quality of U.S. financial commitments to global health; and engage in respectful partnerships to improve global health. In doing so, the U.S. can play a major role in saving lives and improving the quality of life for millions around the world.
