Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of the results of strategic policy research carried out by the Forest Conservation Project of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), between 1998 and 2002. The project's main purpose is to shed light on measures to conserve biodiversity and use forests sustainably, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Download or read book Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management written by Eugenio Martinez-Falero and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. All these quantitative techniques create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management.

Book Synopsis Participatory Mangrove Management in a Changing Climate by : Rajarshi DasGupta
Download or read book Participatory Mangrove Management in a Changing Climate written by Rajarshi DasGupta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the performance and management of mangroves in the changing climatic scenario of the Asia-Pacific region and draws examples and lessons from the national and community-driven mangrove conservation programs of relevant countries including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan as well as the Pacific islands. By highlighting the major drawbacks that hinder effective mangrove conservation, the book contributes towards enhancing climate resilience of communities through proposition of corrective methods and ameliorative approaches of mangrove conservation. Mangroves play an important role in adapting to climate change and provide a plethora of ecosystem services that are fundamental to human survival. Yet these ecosystems are exceptionally prone to extinction due to increased human interventions and changes in environmental boundary conditions. Especially in the Asia-Pacific region, mangroves have dwindled at an exceptional high rate over the past three decades. As the threat of climate change hovers over millions of people in this region, particularly those who crowd the low-lying coastal areas, conservation/restoration of mangroves through appropriate policies and practices remain highly imperative. The primary target readers for this book are students and researchers in the fields of conservation and management of mangroves, especially from the developing tropical countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Other target groups comprise policy planners, practitioners, and NGO workers, who will be able to apply the collective knowledge from this work towards proactive mangrove conservation through effective mediation in local communities.

Book Synopsis National steppe conservation strategy and action plan 2021–2030 by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book National steppe conservation strategy and action plan 2021–2030 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project is carried out collaboratively by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (GDNCNP), General Directorate of Plant Production (GDPP), and General Directorate of Forestry (GDF) with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This project along with the National Steppe Conservation Strategy shows the importance FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry attach to the conservation of Turkey’s rich and vulnerable steppe ecosystems, their sustainable and cooperative management and awareness-raising. This Strategy is instrumental in contributing to the conservation of unique steppe assets possessed by Turkey at national level as well as fulfillment of international commitments such as those arising from the International Convention on Biological Diversity, Aichi Goals of Convention on Biological Diversity and Convention to Combat Desertification. It appears that there are hardly any policies or legal documents directly geared towards steppe ecosystems in Turkey, as opposed to the legal and administrative documents for the conservation and management of mountain-forests, wetlands, and coastal and marine ecosystems. Therefore, the National Steppe Conservation Strategy and Action Plan assumes special importance.
