How does the nature of a country's political system affect the state's reaction to disorder? This study identifies trends in public-order policing across a broad sample of seven countries: Britain, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, the United States of America, Israel, South Africa and China. It explains why the handling of disorder has become a controversial and topical issue in different parts of the world. Each chapter provides a range of data on the size, make-up and cost of the police and follows a common format in analysing the place of the police at the junction of state-society relations.
Book Synopsis On the Wrong Side of The Law by : Graham Smith
Download or read book On the Wrong Side of The Law written by Graham Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of a two volume study, provides an historical account of complaints against Metropolitan police officers between formation of the force in 1829 and codification of remedies for misconduct under the Police Act 1964. A complainant centred standpoint is developed to counteract the marginalization of the interests of victims, which is held to demonstrate that the drive for effective and efficient law enforcement has overshadowed the public interest in holding officers to account for misconduct. After officer accountability before the criminal courts diminished in the nineteenth century, missed opportunities to reform complaints procedures following commissions of inquiry in 1906-08, 1928 and 1960-62 are discussed. The second volume of the study, Combating Impunity: Complaints Against Metropolitan Police, 1964-2021, will examine the part played by complainants and civil society organisations in combating police impunity in the citizen oversight era.

Book Synopsis Police Powers and Accountability by : John L. Lambert
Download or read book Police Powers and Accountability written by John L. Lambert and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional view of the role of the police had come under increasing attacks in the early 1980s. The riots of 1981 and the Scarman Inquiry stimulated a widespread public debate about policing, police powers and accountability. It had become clear that the police did not simply enforce the law. They also made policy about what law to enforce, when to enforce it and against whom to enforce it. It was the control of this discretionary power which was at the heart of the debate at the time. Originally published in 1986, this book considers these critical issues in contemporary policing. It concentrates on those aspects of policing that were usually covered in law and law related courses. It deals with the constitutional framework within which the police operates. It examines the police complaints procedure and the full range of police powers against the background of the political debate at the time. Throughout the book the 1984 Police and Criminal Evidence Act is discussed in detail and its impact upon police and public alike is analysed.

Book excerpt: Policing in the 21st century is becoming increasingly complicated as economic, political, social, and legal circumstances continue to compel police organizations to evolve. To illustrate the complexity of policing in the 21st century and cover themes common to police organizations around the world, Exploring Contemporary Police Challenges: A Global Perspective is organized into six sections, which cover the key policing challenges across the globe. Based on US President Barack Obama’s 2015 Task Force’s organization into six broad pillars, this volume contains contributions from policing experts focusing on Building Trust and Legitimacy; Providing Policy and Oversight; Utilizing Technology and Social Media; Developing Community Policing and Crime Reduction; Providing Police Training and Education; and Facilitating Officer Wellness and Safety. Scholarly analyses and discussions of these issues in 16 countries on 6 continents offer a global perspective on policing in the 21st century. This volume simultaneously enhances the scope of policing scholarship and demonstrates that no country can sidestep the need to adjust to these rapid and profound changes.
