Book Synopsis Policing, Surveillance and Social Control by : Tim Newburn
Download or read book Policing, Surveillance and Social Control written by Tim Newburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the result of research carried out in a busy London police station on the role and impact of closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the management and surveillance of suspects - the most thorough example of the use of CCTV by the police in the world. It focuses on the use of CCTV in a very different environment to that in which its impact has previously been studied, and draws upon the analysis of CCTV footage, suspects' backgrounds and extensive interviewing of both police officers and suspects. The research is situated in the context of concerns about the human rights implications of the use of CCTV, and challenges criminological and social theory in its conceptualisation of the role of their police, their governance and the use of CCTV. It raises key questions about both the future of policing and the treatment of suspects in custody. A key theme of this book is the need to move away from a narrow focus on the negative, intrusive face of surveillance: as this study demonstrates, CCTV has another 'face' - one that potentially watches and protects. Both 'faces' need to be examined and analysed simultaneously in order to understand the impact and implications of electronic surveillance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual presents a detailed description of the policies, procedures, and results of the Street Crime Unit (SCU) which utilizes plainclothes police and 'decoys' to apprehend robbery and assault suspects. The primary objective is to effect quality arrests which lead to convictions -- with no increased danger to police or citizens. This manual presents a detailed description of the policies and procedures which govern SCUM operations. The chapters in this manual deal with specific areas of administrative concern, focusing on manpower requirements as well as operational issues. In addition to discussing policies and procedures, each chapter debates replication issues, among the topics presented are: organization and administration; personnel selection, training and evaluation; SCUM crime analysis methods, deployment strategies, and street tactics; guidelines on confrontations and arrests; and the housing hardware and communication systems of the SCUM. The SCU's methods for maintaining the integrity of unit members are explored. The legal issue of entrapment is discussed as well, emphasizing the necessity for developing guidelines to assist officers in avoiding entrapment, figures and facts on SCU costs and results are documented and arrest and conviction rates, injury levels, and crime reductive impact are discussed. Although not complete, recent statistics indicate that approximately 90 percent of all SCU arrests result in conviction. The final chapter presents a comprehensive evaluation design for assessing the outcomes and impacts of Street Crime Unit operations. Appendixes contain statutes for assault, larceny and robbery; procedures for bribery arrest and stop and frisk; an inventory of SCU equipment; and various guidelines and forms relating to the interview and rating of SCU candidates and their subsequent training and performance evaluation. The New York City Police Department Street Crime Unit is one of 13 programs which have earned the LEAA 'exemplary' level.

Book Synopsis Suspect Citizens by : Frank R. Baumgartner
Download or read book Suspect Citizens written by Frank R. Baumgartner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suspect Citizens offers the most comprehensive look to date at the most common form of police-citizen interactions, the routine traffic stop. Throughout the war on crime, police agencies have used traffic stops to search drivers suspected of carrying contraband. From the beginning, police agencies made it clear that very large numbers of police stops would have to occur before an officer might interdict a significant drug shipment. Unstated in that calculation was that many Americans would be subjected to police investigations so that a small number of high-level offenders might be found. The key element in this strategy, which kept it hidden from widespread public scrutiny, was that middle-class white Americans were largely exempt from its consequences. Tracking these police practices down to the officer level, Suspect Citizens documents the extreme rarity of drug busts and reveals sustained and troubling disparities in how racial groups are treated.

Download or read book Suspects’ Rights in India written by Prejal Shah and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the procedural, cultural, and institutional framework of custodial interrogation in India. This volume, — Analyses the Indian framework of custodial interrogation to identify its fundamental flaws, and emphasises on the need for having a lawyer present during custodial interrogation; — Demonstrates significant evidence on state of suspects’ rights in India through comparative law methodologies with a focus on common law scholarship and jurisprudence, more particularly England and Wales, and supplemented by vital empirical research through key interviews with related institutional parties; — Discusses emerging, seminal jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights on applications of the right to fair trial at the custodial interrogation stage, especially shedding light on modern applications of the right to legal assistance in England and Wales, and radical Strasbourg-inspired reforms in other European jurisdictions; — Highlights the right to legal assistance as one of the viable solutions to break the culture of police lawlessness at this critical stage of the criminal process. An invigorating study, this book is aimed at enriching data and hypothesis for academics, policy makers, civil society organizations, and students working in the area of law and legal studies, police and policing, citizenship, and political science.
