Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can universities implement strategic integrated marketing to effectively build and communicate their value? At a time of declining public support, a shrinking pipeline of traditional college-bound students, and a steady rise in tuition and discount rates, higher education leaders have never been under more pressure. How can they ensure steady or growing enrollments while cultivating greater philanthropic support, increasing research funding, and diversifying revenue streams? In How to Market a University, Teresa M. Flannery argues that institutions can meet all of these goals by implementing strategic integrated marketing in ways that are consistent with academic culture and university values. Flannery provides a road map for college leaders who want to learn how to build value—both in terms of revenue and reputation—by differentiating from competitors and developing personalized, supportive, and long-lasting relationships with stakeholders. Defining marketing while identifying its purposes in the context of higher education, Flannery draws on nonprofit marketing scholarship, the expertise of leading higher education marketing practitioners and administrators, and her own experiences over two decades at two different institutions. She teaches readers how to • set up their marketing leadership for success • find or build the necessary organizational capacity • set a firm foundation through market research • establish a differentiated value proposition and strong brand strategy • encourage enterprise-wide integration of marketing and communications • consider technical and resource requirements to succeed in digital marketing • develop appropriate and rigorous measurement • plan for appropriate investment • anticipate and prepare for future trends This practical guide reveals how to cultivate student, alumni, donor, and partner loyalty through strategic marketing. How to Market a University offers leaders and their CMOs the language, examples, and even questions they should discuss and answer in order to build or refine their marketing strategy.

Book excerpt: The last one hundred years have seen a number of events that could be perceived as disruptive challenges to the normal operation of the legal order. Some have been disruptive innovations of technologies or business practices, others social changes or constitutional transformations, further buttressed by the impact of globalisation and interdependence affecting the development of international, transnational and global law. Coincidentally, this period of one hundred years has been bookended by two pandemics, themselves disruptive realities testing the resilience as well as the adaptability of the legal regimes. A hundred years ago, the founding dean of a newly established law faculty beginning its mission amid the ashes of the First World War and the disintegration of the only remaining European empire gave an opening lecture exploring the role of law and judges in the face of revolutionary societal changes. Drawing upon that important text, this edited volume explores similar challenges for law brought about by various disruptive realities. The collection looks at the past as well as the future. Following the text of the opening lecture by Pitamic, the contributions are grouped under five headings, dealing with the law and revolution in 1918, the challenges posed for law by the seemingly more gradual political or technological transformations, the effects of globalisation and the changing world, with the final contributions reassessing the law, its methodologies and traditional paradigms including, in the epilogue, the challenges posed for law the recent disruptive reality of the Covid-19 pandemic. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of legal history, jurisprudence, constitutional law, law and politics, and law and technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A behind-the-scenes look at how the United States aided the Velvet Revolution Democracy's Defenders offers a behind-the-scenes account of the little-known role played by the U.S. embassy in Prague in the collapse of communism in what was then Czechoslovakia. Featuring fifty-two newly declassified diplomatic cables, the book shows how the staff of the embassy led by U.S. Ambassador Shirley Temple Black worked with dissident groups and negotiated with the communist government during a key period of the Velvet Revolution that freed Czechoslovakia from Soviet rule. In the vivid reporting of these cables, Black and other members of the U.S. diplomatic corps in Prague describe student demonstrations and their meetings with anti-government activists. The embassy also worked to forestall a violent crackdown by the communist regime during its final months in power. Edited by Norman L. Eisen, who served as U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2011 to 2014, Democracy's Defenders contributes fresh evidence to the literature on U.S. diplomatic history, the cold war era, and American promotion of democracy overseas. In an introductory essay, Eisen places the diplomatic cables in context and analyzes their main themes. In an afterword, Eisen, Czech historian Dr. Mikuláš Pešta, and Brookings researcher Kelsey Landau explain how the seeds of democracy that the United States helped plant have grown in the decades since the Velvet Revolution. The authors trace a line from U.S. efforts to promote democracy and economic liberalization after the Velvet Revolution to the contemporary situations of what are now the separate nations of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition, by P.R. Bunker, published in 1979, remains the sole textbook that explains the use of the molecular symmetry group in understanding high resolution molecular spectra. Since 1979 there has been considerable progress in the field and a second edition is required; the original author has been joined in its writing by Per Jensen. The Material of the first edition has been reorganized and much has been added. The molecular symmetry group is now introduced early on, and the explanation of how to determine nuclear spin statistical weights has been consolidated in one chapter, after groups, symmetry groups, character tables and the Hamiltonian have been introduced. A description of the symmetry in the three-dimensional rotation group K(spatial), irreducible spherical tensor operators, and vector coupling coefficients is now included. The chapters on energy levels and selection rules contain a great deal of material that was not in the first edition (much of it was undiscovered in 1979), concerning the Jahn-Teller effect, the Renner effect, Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory, the use of variational methods for calculating rotational-vibration energy levels, and the contact transformed rotation-vibration Hamiltonian. A new chapter is devoted entirely to weakly bound cluster molecules (often called Van der Waals molecules). A selection of experimental spectra is included in order to illustrate particular theoretical points.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomial extremal problems (PEP) constitute one of the most important subclasses of nonlinear programming models. Their distinctive feature is that an objective function and constraints can be expressed by polynomial functions in one or several variables. Let :e = {:e 1, ... , :en} be the vector in n-dimensional real linear space Rn; n PO(:e), PI (:e), ... , Pm (:e) are polynomial functions in R with real coefficients. In general, a PEP can be formulated in the following form: (0.1) find r = inf Po(:e) subject to constraints (0.2) Pi (:e) =0, i=l, ... ,m (a constraint in the form of inequality can be written in the form of equality by introducing a new variable: for example, P( x) ~ 0 is equivalent to P(:e) + y2 = 0). Boolean and mixed polynomial problems can be written in usual form by adding for each boolean variable z the equality: Z2 - Z = O. Let a = {al, ... ,a } be integer vector with nonnegative entries {a;}f=l. n Denote by R[a](:e) monomial in n variables of the form: n R[a](:e) = IT :ef'; ;=1 d(a) = 2:7=1 ai is the total degree of monomial R[a]. Each polynomial in n variables can be written as sum of monomials with nonzero coefficients: P(:e) = L caR[a](:e), aEA{P) IX x Nondifferentiable optimization and polynomial problems where A(P) is the set of monomials contained in polynomial P.
