Book excerpt: The polarization of the recoil proton in pion(o) photoproduction off hydrogen has been measured for photons in the range 500-1000 MeV, using the Stanford Mark III linear accelerator. Protons were detected at an angle b and momentum analyzed using a 90 degree magnetic spectrometer. The scattered protons were detected by two counter telescopes placed symmetrically to left and right of the carbon target and making angles = C with respect to the direction of a proton emerging from the spectrometer. The measured asymmetry was obtained from the usual formula: e = L-R/L+R and the proton polarization P(b) was then obtained by substituting the known carbon analyzing power A(c) in the equation e(b, c) = (P(b) A(c). Using parity conservation it can be shown that P(b) = -P(b). Thus the running time was equally divided between measurements with the spectrometer at +b and -b. This technique enabled residual artificial asymmetries to be removed, since these do not change sign when b becomes -b. Preliminary results are presented and compared to existing data from various laboratories. (Author).

Book excerpt: Angular distributions of recoil-proton polarization for elastic scattering of positive and negative pi mesons on protons were measured at 523, 572, and 689 Mev incidentpion kinetic energy. The pion source was an internal target of the Berkeley Bevatron. Polarization measurements were made by observing the azimuthal asymmetry of sample angular distributions of recoil protons that scatter in large carbon-plate spark chambers. The spark chambers proved to be very suitable polarization analyzerdetectors. The spark chambers were triggered by an array of scintillation and Cerenkov counters that identified the particles entering the chambers as recoil protons from elastic pion-proton scattering. Two plausible nonunique sets of phase shifts were obtained by employing: restrictive assumptions related to the higher resonances, available pion-proton total and differential cross sections measured at nearby energies, and the measurements of this experiment. One set is characterized by a J = 3/2, T = 1/2, D-wave resonance; the other set is characterized by a J = 3/2, T = 1/2, P-wave resonance at 600-Mev incidentpion energy. 38 references. (auth).

Book excerpt: Wide-angle exclusive Compton scattering and single-pion photoproduction from the proton have been investigated via measurement of the polarization transfer from a circularly polarized photon beam to the recoil proton. The WACS polarization transfer was analyzed at an incident photon energy of 3.7 GeV at a proton scattering angle of [theta]Pcm = 70°. The longitudinal transfer KLL, measured to be 0.645 ± 0.059 ± 0.048, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, has the same sign as predicted for the reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton. However, the observed value is ~3 times larger than predicted by the GPD-based calculations, which indicates a significant unknown contribution to the scattering amplitude.

Book excerpt: The polarization of the recoil proton for .pi.p and .pi.−p elastic scattering has been measured for various angles at 547 MeV/c and 625 MeV/c by a collaboration involving The George Washington University; the University of California, Los Angeles; and Abilene Christian University. The experiment was performed at the P3 East experimental area of the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Beam intensities varied from 0.4 to 1.0 x 107 .pi.−'s/sec and from 3.0 to 10.0 x 107 .pi./sup +/'s/sec. The beam spot size at the target was 1 cm in the horizontal direction by 2.5 cm in the vertical direction. A liquid-hydrogen target was used in a flask 5.7 cm in diameter and 10 cm high. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer (LAS) to detect and momentum analyze the pions and the JANUS recoil proton polarimeter to detect and measure the polarization of the protons. Results from this experiment are compared with previous measurements of the polarization, with analyzing power data previously taken by this group, and to partial-wave analysis predictions. 12 refs., 53 figs., 18 tabs.
