Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early beginning before the war, the field of semiconductors has developped as a classical example where the standard approximations of 'band theory' can be safely used to study its interesting electronic properties. Thus in these covalent crystals, the electronic structure is only weakly coupled with the atomic vibrations; one-electron Bloch functions can be used and their energy bands can be accurately computed in the neighborhood of the energy gap between the valence and conduction bands; nand p doping can be obtained by introducing substitutional impurities which only introduce shallow donors and acceptors and can be studied by an effective-mass weak-scattering description. Yet, even at the beginning, it was known from luminescence studies that these simple concepts failed to describe the various 'deep levels' introduced near the middle of the energy gap by strong localized imperfections. These imperfections not only include some interstitial and many substitutional atoms, but also 'broken bonds' associated with surfaces and interfaces, dis location cores and 'vacancies', i.e., vacant iattice sites in the crystal. In all these cases, the electronic structure can be strongly correlated with the details of the atomic structure and the atomic motion. Because these 'deep levels' are strongly localised, electron-electron correlations can also playa significant role, and any weak perturbation treatment from the perfect crystal structure obviously fails. Thus, approximate 'strong coupling' techniques must often be used, in line' with a more chemical de scription of bonding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordered intermetallics constitute a unique class of metallic materials which may be developed as new-generation materials for structural use at high temperatures in hostile environments. At present, there is a worldwide interest in intermetallics, and extensive efforts have been devoted to intermetallic research and development in the U.S., Japan, European countries, and other nations. As a result, significant advances have been made in all areas of intermetallic research. This NATO Advanced Workshop on ordered intermetallics (1) reviews the recent progress, and (2) assesses the future direction of intermetallic research in the areas of electronic structure and phase stability, deformation and fracture, and high-temperature properties. The book is divided into six parts: (1) Electronic Structure and Phase Stability; (2) Deformation and Dislocation Structures; (3) Ductility and Fracture; (4) Kinetic Processes and Creep Behavior; (5) Research Programs and Highlights; and (6) Assessment of Current Research and Recommendation for Future Work. The first four parts review the recent advances in the three focus areas. The fifth part provides highlights of the intermetallic research under major programs and in different institutes and countries. The last part provides a forum for the discussion of research areas for future studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing standard textbooks on radiative transfer (RT) are usually confined to theoretical models with little reference to experimental methods. This book has been written to illustrate how calorimetric and spectroscopic measurements can be used to check theoretical predictions on extinction properties of infrared radiation in optically thick, absorbing and scattering particulate media. A determination of infrared extinction coefficients is now possible from three completely independent methods. An interpretation of the results of thermal conductivity measurements is made in terms of the diffusion model of RT. One of the most important topics of the book is the experimental separation of heat transfer modes. Since all modes other than scattered radiation are coupled by temperature profiles, conservation of energy also requires an understanding of the non-radiative heat flow components. Unlike other volumes on RT, this book also contains a review of non-radiative heat flow mechanisms. Thus the book does not treat RT as an isolated phenomenon but stresses the key role of RT among the other transport processes. A considerable part of the book is devoted to the calculation of extinction cross sections by application of Mie theory, anisotropic and dependent scattering, optimization of radiation extinction by experimental means, existence or non-existence of thermal conductivity, and other general questions within the field of thermophysics.
