Book excerpt: POETS UNLEASHED - AN ANTHOLOGY is a compilation of just a few of the beautifully written poems of Ron Cross, Patricia Joe Schuman, Dennis Moore, Gisele Marasca, Al Michael, Thomas Lee Rhymes, Kim Shaver, Kathleen Redling and Mariano Rivera. As you read the poems in this book you will visualize the picture that each poet paints. You will feel the romantic tug on your heartstrings as you read the love poems, while other poems will invoke sadness, passion, hope and laughter. But, most of all, you will choose your favorite and the words will touch you deeply. The uniqueness of this book is that no poet stands above the others. Each poet has something to say and says it in his or her own words and style. Everyone who reads this book will find that special poem, the poets not only write for themselves but for us, the reader. These poems are given to us as a very special gift. To answer the question from Thomas "Where does the soul of a poet go?" It is here, in this book. Its presence is felt in each and every poem. Cindy Cross

Book excerpt: This book aims to shed light on several subjects from the author’s perspective, through personal connections with others, and observations of her surroundings. The poetry is one part, and the visual illustrations add another layer, in the hope that the reader may somehow understand and connect with the pain, happiness and appreciation experienced through this body of work. Through all experiences in life, both positive and negative. No matter how dark or how light, there is always room for growth, understanding and change of any person. There is always a silver lining in every cloud, as long as one is willing to look for it and learn. “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: It takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility” William Wordsworth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ireland, few figures have generated more hatred than Oliver Cromwell, whose seventeenth-century conquest, massacres, and dispossessions would endure in the social memory for ages to come. The Devil from over the Sea explores the many ways in which Cromwell was remembered and sometimes conveniently 'forgotten' in historical, religious, political, and literary texts, according to the interests of different communities across time. Cromwell's powerful afterlife in Ireland, however, cannot be understood without also investigating his presence in folklore and the landscape, in ruins and curses. Nor can he be separated from the idea of the 'Cromwellian': a term which came to elicit an entire chain of contemptuous associations that would begin after his invasion and assume a wholly new force in the nineteenth century. What emerges from all these memorializing traces is a multitudinous Cromwell who could be represented as brutal, comic, sympathetic, or satanic. He could be discarded also, tellingly, from the accounts of the past, and especially by those which viewed him as an embarrassment or worse. In addition to exploring the many reasons why Cromwell was so vehemently remembered or forgotten in Ireland, Sarah Covington finally uncovers the larger truths conveyed by sometimes fanciful or invented accounts. Contrary to being damaging examples of myth-making, the memorializations contained in martyrologies, folk tales, or newspaper polemics were often productive in cohering communities, or in displaying agency in the form of 'counter-memories' that claimed Cromwell for their own and reshaped Irish history in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Offensive Art is an arch and sometimes caustic look at the art of political satire as practiced in democratic, monarchical, and authoritarian societies around the world over the past century-together with the efforts by governmental, religious, and corporate authorities to suppress it by censorship, intimidation, policy, and fatwa. Examples are drawn from the full spectrum of satiric genres, including novels, plays, verse, songs, essays, cartoons, cabarets and revues, movies, television, and the Internet. The multicultural and multimedia breadth and historical depth of Freedman's comparative approach frames his novel assessment of the role of political satire in today's post-9/11 world, and in particular the cross-cultural controversies it generates, such as the global protests against the Jyllands-Posten cartoons. In a tongue-in-cheek style peppered with the world's best one-liners from the last century, The Offensive Art recounts the acrimonious and often perilous cat-and-mouse games between political satirists and their censors and inhibitors through the last century in America (especially FDR, LBJ, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush II and in wartime), Britain (especially Churchill, Thatcher, Blair and the Royals), Germany (Hitler to the present), Russia (Stalin to the present), China (Mao to the present), India (from the Raj on), and the Middle East (from 1920s Egypt to today). Freedman focuses on the role and transformation of satire during shifts from authoritarian to democratic systems in such places as South Africa, Argentina, and Eastern Europe. He surveys the state of satire throughout the world today, identifying the most dangerous countries for practitioners of the offensive art, and presents his findings as to the political efficacy of satire in provoking change.

Book excerpt: “[A] comic masterpiece.” —People magazine’s “Book of the Week” “A charming comedy on love, friendship, and the surprising influence of man’s best friend.” —Harper’s Bazaar National Book Award finalist and bestselling author Meg Rosoff's charming, hilarious new novel about a young New Yorker’s search for happiness and the two dogs who help him find it—the perfect summer read Jonathan Trefoil’s boss is unhinged, his relationship baffling, and his apartment just the wrong side of legal. His girlfriend wants to marry someone just like him—only richer and with a different sense of humor. He doesn’t remember life being this confusing, back before everyone expected him to act like a grown-up. When his brother asks him to look after his dogs, Jonathan's world view begins to shift. Could a border collie and a cocker spaniel hold the key to life, the universe, and everything? Their sly maneuvering on daily walks and visits to the alluring vet suggest that human emotional intelligence may not be top dog after all. A funny, wise romantic comedy set in Manhattan, Jonathan Unleashed is a story of tangled relationships, friendships, and dogs. Rosoff’s novel is for anyone wondering what to be when they grow up, and how on earth to get there.
