Book excerpt: George Herbert (1593-1633) and R.S. Thomas (1913-2000), each a major English poet and an Anglican priest, lived in very different times, one before the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and industrialization, and one following. Yet the two men and their poetry bear striking resemblances: Both loved nature and music, both were pacifists, and both struggled with the claims of faith, the nature of the spiritual life, and the recurrent silences of God. This book demonstrates that when their lives and poems are studied side by side, each man enhances our understanding of the other. The first essay deals with their sense of calling as priests and poets. The work then explores topics that relate to their roles as parish priests: ministry, the Bible, the Eucharist, and prayer. Several essays follow dealing with broader questions of the human condition: faith, sin, love, reason and science, and nature. The work concludes by considering their poems about Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter.

Book excerpt: “Make It True meets Medusario brings together poets from divergent languages, cultures, and aesthetics to create a...conversation...a fertile meeting place for ongoing ideas about poetry that might trouble the all too-easy academic labels and the subsequent segregation those aesthetic and political divisions cause within the larger, global poetry community.” -From the book’s introduction by Matthew Trease This collaboration, spawned by two previous anthologies, includes the Spanish language poets of the Neobarroco school, as organized by José Kozer, a Cuban Neobarroco poet, together with poets from the Cascadia bioregion, arranged by Paul E Nelson, founder of the Seattle Poetics Lab (SPLAB) and Thomas Walton, editor-in-chief of Pageboy Magazine, Seattle, WA. Book excerpt: The "World" in Robert Lee Brewer's Solving the World's Problems is a slippery world ... where chaos always hovers near, where we are (and should be) "splashing around in dark puddles." And one feels a bit dizzy reading these poems because (while always clear, always full of meaning) they come at reality slantwise so that nothing is quite the same and the reader comes away with a new way of looking at the ordinary objects and events of life. The poems are brim-full of surprises and delights, twists in the language, double-meanings of words, leaps of thought and imagination, interesting line-breaks. There are love and relationship poems, dream poems, poems of life in the modern world. And always the sense (as he writes) of "pulling the world closer to me/leaves falling to the ground/ birds flying south." I read these once, twice with great enjoyment. I will go back to them often. -Patricia Fargnoli, former Poet Laureate of New Hampshire and author of Then, Something

Book excerpt: An insightful and haunting new collection from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic Irreverent and sly, observant and keenly imagined, Come Closer and Listen is the latest work from one of our most beloved poets. With his trademark sense of humor, open-hearted empathy, and perceptive vision, Charles Simic roots his poetry in the ordinary world while still taking in the wide sweep of the human experience. From poems pithy, wry, and cutting—“Time—that murderer/that no has caught yet”—to his layered reflections on everything from love to grief to the wonders of nature, from the story of St. Sebastian to that of a couple weeding side by side, Simic’s work continues to reveal to us an unmistakable voice in modern poetry. An innovator in form and a chronicler of both our interior lives and the people we are in the world, Simic remains one of our most important and lasting voices on the page.

Book excerpt: Everyone has his or her own idea of what poetry is. In Poets Unbound you have fifteen perspectives. Whether your taste runs to formal rhyming poems, imagistic depictions of feeling, or the no-frills language of the everyday, there is something here for you. There are poems celebrating life, poems of mourning, nature poems, city poems, poems about mythology and popular culture, animals, God, and mankind. This collection is as diverse as its authors, but whatever the differences, the poems are united by the shared value that poetry is not only important but necessary. Every poet in this book has handed copies of his/her poems around a table to half a dozen people with editing pens to ask, "how could this poem be better?" Every poet in this book has left a meeting feeling sorry that he/she asked, and come back the next week to hear more, trusting that a poem important enough to write, is important enough to craft. Poets Unbound contains many styles, subjects, and viewpoints. Most of all, it contains the distinct voices of people who believe poetry a vital way to communicate the individual world.

Book excerpt: A major addition to the literature of poetry, Edward Hirsch’s sparkling new work is a compilation of forms, devices, groups, movements, isms, aesthetics, rhetorical terms, and folklore—a book that all readers, writers, teachers, and students of poetry will return to over and over. Hirsch has delved deeply into the poetic traditions of the world, returning with an inclusive, international compendium. Moving gracefully from the bards of ancient Greece to the revolutionaries of Latin America, from small formal elements to large mysteries, he provides thoughtful definitions for the most important poetic vocabulary, imbuing his work with a lifetime of scholarship and the warmth of a man devoted to his art. Knowing how a poem works is essential to unlocking its meaning. Hirsch’s entries will deepen readers’ relationships with their favorite poems and open greater levels of understanding in each new poem they encounter. Shot through with the enthusiasm, authority, and sheer delight that made How to Read a Poem so beloved, A Poet’s Glossary is a new classic.
