Book Synopsis John Ruskin and the Ethics of Consumption by : David Melville Craig
Download or read book John Ruskin and the Ethics of Consumption written by David Melville Craig and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book on the Victorian critic and public intellectual John Ruskin by a scholar of religion and ethics, this work recovers both Ruskin's engaged critique of economic life and his public practice of moral imagination. With its reading of Ruskin as an innovative contributor to a tradition of ethics concerned with character, culture, and community, this book recasts established interpretations of Ruskin's place in nineteenth-century literature and aesthetics, challenges nostalgic diagnoses of the supposed historical loss of virtue ethics, and demonstrates the limitations of any politics that eschews common purpose as vital to individual agency and social welfare. Although Ruskin's moralistic efforts did not always allow for democratic individuality, equality, and contestation, his eclecticism, Craig argues, helps to correct these problems. Further, Ruskin's interdisciplinary explorations of beauty, work, nature, religion, politics, and economic value reveal the ways in which his insights into the practical connections between aesthetics and ethics, and culture and character, might be applied to today's debates about liberal modernity today. With the triumph of global capitalism, and the near-silence of any opposing voice, Ruskin's model of an engaged reading of culture and his public practice of moral imagination deserve renewed attention. This book provides students in religion, politics, and social theory with a timely reintroduction to this timeless figure.

Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands have a reputation for their ineffable charisma, laid-back pace, and distinct grooviness. As Anny Scoones travels the length of our beloved Vancouver Island, and visits the little coastal and inland towns and iconic places, she shares her observations, musing on its fascinating and layered history. Whether it’s an account of the chainsaw carving festival in Campbell River, a take on the giant gnome just north of Nanoose Bay, or a description of folks met at the Foggy Mountain Fall Fair in Cumberland, this book takes us to extraordinary locations and introduces us to the people who make this part of the world so compelling. Observe, pause, ponder, and have what Anny likes to call “a little think” on the various characteristics and personalities of these areas. Whether you’re a Lycra-clad cyclist climbing the hills of Mayne Island, a slow food enthusiast besotted with “sexy” apples on Salt Spring Island, or someone dreaming about Vancouver Island as a potential destination, these essays and illustrations will connect you with people and places that seem curiously familiar.

Book Synopsis Al-Maqrīzī’s al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar by :
Download or read book Al-Maqrīzī’s al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Arab Thieves, Peter Webb critically explores the classic tales of pre-Islamic Arabian outlaws in Arabic Literature. A group of Arabian camel-rustlers became celebrated figures in Muslim memories of pre-Islam, and much poetry ascribed to them and stories about their escapades grew into an outlaw tradition cited across Arabic literature. The ninth/fifteenth-century Egyptian historian al-Maqrīzī arranged biographies of ten outlaws into a chapter on ‘Arab Thieves’ in his wide-ranging history of the world before Muhammad. This volume presents the first critical edition of al-Maqrīzī’s text with a fully annotated English translation, alongside a detailed study that interrogates the outlaw lore to uncover the ways in which Arabic writers constructed outlaw identities and how al-Maqrīzī used the tales to communicate his vision of pre-Islam. Via an exhaustive survey of early Arabic sources about the outlaws and comparative readings with outlaw traditions in other world literatures, The Arab Thieves reveals how Arabic literature crafted lurid narratives about criminality and employed them to tell ancient Arab history.
