Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".

Book excerpt: Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore (23 July 1823 - 26 November 1896) was an English poet and critic best known for The Angel in the House, his narrative poem about the Victorian ideal of a happy marriage. As a young man, Patmore found employment in the British Museum. Upon the publication of his first book of poems in 1844, he became acquainted with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. After the death of his first wife, the grief of loss became in great measure his later theme. Patmore is today one of the least-known but best-regarded Victorian poets. In 1853 he republished Tamerton Church Tower, the more successful of his pieces from Poems of 1844.

The arrangement of these selections is intended to be elastic, changing from easier to harder pieces, and back again. It is also meant to be suggestive of the likeness or the difference between one poem and another, so as to quicken thought and feeling. Let us hope that every child in our Primary and Grammar classes will find something here to please him, and that the teachers will encourage the children, first, to read only what is suited to them, and, next, to commit what they read to memory, as the best means of exercising that faculty and kindling the whole intelligence. May the love of poetry, and of the good that poetry teaches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Will they say despairingly, "This is too long," and "That is too hard," and "I don't like that because it is not interesting"? Are there three or four pleasing poems and are all the rest put in to fill up the book? Nay, verily! The poems in this collection are those that children love. With the exception of seven, they are short enough for children to commit to memory without wearying themselves or losing interest in the poem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Children's Poet To make a success of the study of Longfellow a teacher can not be too familiar with his poems. She must read and re read the simpler poems, make them so thoroughly a part of herself, that she will be a living inspiration to her pupils. If we compel pupils to learn certain facts about an author, it will not have the desired effect. We must teach them to love those of whom they are studying and it certainly is an easy matter to make them love such a character as our Longfellow. The very fact of his having loved the children so dearly, and written so extensively about them insures their interest. Let us first take them on a little imaginary trip to the city of Portland, Maine. Tell something of the city of Portland, near the sea. Do the children know what the sea is? If not, tell them. Show them the picture of Longfellow's home at Portland. Tell them of a dear, little, blue-eyed, auburn haired baby that once came to live in that home; how he grew and grew, just as babies always do; how he listened to the songs of the birds and the song of the sea, and the beautiful thoughts they whispered to him. Tell of his surroundings; the old Deering woods through which he used to wander; the old fort on the hill near his borne, from which a gun was fired every morning at sunrise. Tell of his school life; his later college life, especially emphasizing his boyish experiences and games. Teach the children to love him as a child, and later as a man and poet. Book excerpt: Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) was an American author best known for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels (not including four lost, unpublished novels), 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema. Born and raised in upstate New York, Baum moved west after an unsuccessful stint as a theater producer and playwright. He and his wife opened a store in South Dakota and he edited and published a newspaper. They then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and published children's literature, coming out with the first Oz book in 1900. While continuing his writing, among his final projects he sought to establish a movie studio focused on children's films in Los Angeles, California.

Sometimes, not al ways, she can make comments that lend light and feeling. Often, but not always, she can help by reading aloud. Sometimes, where necessary, she can ask questions to provoke thought and bring out the meaning. Some times she should simply tell the meaning. Always her function is to stimulate, suggest, guide, but not to obstruct the sunlight of the poet's genius; There should be much reading aloud by the pupils. Remembering that, being poetry, it is rhythmic utter-i ance, they should read it so; not singsong fashion, nor yet in the bald and unrhythmic fashion of prose.
