Book excerpt: Savitri is Sri Aurobindo's major poetic work, an epic in blank-verse of about 24,000 lines in which a tale from the Mahabharata becomes a symbol of the human soul's spiritual quest and destiny. The tale of Satyavan and Savitri , Sri Aurobindo noted, is recited in the Mahabharata as a story of conjugal love conquering death . Sri Aurobindo has widened the original legend and turned it into a symbol in which the soul of man, represented by Satyavan, is delivered from the grip of death and ignorance through the love and power of the Divine Mother, incarnated upon earth as Savitri. Sri Aurobindo worked on this poem for more than thirty years. When a disciple asked why he kept rewriting it, he replied: That is very simple. I used Savitri as a means of ascension. I began it on a certain mental level, each time I could reach a higher level I rewrote it from that level. . . In fact Savitri has not been regarded by me as a poem to be written and finished, but as a field of experimentation to see how far poetry could be written from one's own yogic consciousnes and how that could be made creative. The Mother considered Savitri to be the supreme revelation of Sri Aurobindo's vision and called it that marvellous prophetic poem which ill be humanity's guide towards its future realisation. (The demy size edition includes letters of Sri Aurobindo on Savitri. The crown size edition has line numbers.) Contents: Savitri; Sri Aurobindo's letters on Savitri Subjects: Poetry, Philosophy, Yoga, Mysticism.

This book was released on 2023-06-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of Sri Aurobindo's "Savitri" in the light of the Bhagavad Gita which was awarded the doctorate in English by the University of Calicut in 1996 is being now published on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo. The thesis was an attempt to establish the intimations of intimacy between Sri Aurobindo's epic poem "Savitri" and the Bhagavad Gita. The influence of the Gita on Sri Aurobindo is well known starting with his vision of Krishna at the Alipore jail and by his own statement that he was not only able to understand intellectually but also realize what Sri Krishna demanded of Arjuna. The cardinal teaching of Gita, "Vasudeva Sarvam iti" provided for him the bedrock of his philosophy in "Savitri". The spiritual revolution he envisioned in "Savitri" is that the universe is a manifestation of consciousness occurring in an integral process. Modern quantum physics is bearing many similarities with his ideas. Thus while "Savitri" is a symbol of struggle, redemption, and the incarnation of a divine mother who restores the Golden age, the Bhagavad Gita teaches the same call to the eternal avatar in each being and to the establishment of Sat-Chit-Ananda on the terrestrial plane.

Book excerpt: Sri Aurobindo's multi-faceted genius is not easily fathomed. The world knows him primarily as a Mahayogi. He was also a superb poet in English and achieved the impossible by producing a great philosophical epic in Savitri. Almost 50 years a-growing, the epic poem takes up the secular legend of Savitri and Satyavan found in Vyasa's Mahabharata and retells the tale in terms of man's evolutionary advancement and the possibilities of his great future on earth. Savitri by itself, Savitri in relation to Sri Aurobindo's life and work, and Savitri in relation to the great epics of the world and even in relation to the currents of human thoughts and experience of all times: these are the three ascending terms in the argument in A Study of Savitri. At a time when there is a widening interest in Sri Aurobindo's poem, this trustworthy volume will be a great help to aspirants the world over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all of the essays collected in this volume were written for and first published as monthly instalments in Next Future, the e-journal of the Sri Aurobindo Society Pondicherry. The 47 instalments ended with the passing of Dr. Nadkarni in September 2007, and cover Savitri Book by Book, Canto by Canto, from the beginning up to the climactic point in the middle of Book Eleven, where Savitri is offered four boons of merger with the Supreme, and asks instead for the Supreme Peace, Oneness, Energy and Bliss ‘for Earth and Men’. Dr. Nadkarni has written other essays on Savitri as well as giving many other talks, but this collection represents a masterly ‘Introduction’ (as he modestly called it) to the revelatory poem which he loved so much and understood so well. It has been compiled and published at the request of his family, and we feel sure that it will be welcomed by Savitri readers and students all over the world, and to a certain extent make up for the great loss that his many admirers experienced when he passed away in September 2007 at the age of 74.

Book Synopsis The Essential Aurobindo by : Sri Aurobindo
Download or read book The Essential Aurobindo written by Sri Aurobindo and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2001 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who wrote the Gospel of John? The author identifies himself only as "the disciple whom Jesus loved," and Christian tradition tells us that this disciple was the apostle John. However, during the past century, scholars have increasingly come to doubt that attribution. In 1902, Rudolf Steiner wrote that the author of the Gospel of John was in fact Lazarus. Steiner's position stemmed from his insight that Lazarus's encounter with death involved far more than people realized--an initiation into higher spiritual realities that uniquely qualified him to write this gospel. Edward Smith takes up this argument and shows that subsequent research has tended to favor Lazarus for reasons grounded in John's Gospel itself. More important, Smith shows that subsequent discoveries at Nag Hammadi and Mar Saba corroborate Steiner's reasoning about the nature of the raising of Lazarus, pointing to Lazarus as "the rich young ruler" of Mark's Gospel.
