Book excerpt: Presented here is the third edition of John Brown's definitive biography of the great English preacher and writer John Bunyan (1628-1688). Bunyan is best known for his allegory 'The Pilgrim's Progress' but wrote numerous other works including Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. A tinker by trade, he was a popular preacher whose call to preach was recognized by his congregation. This was no formal recognition and upon the restoration of 1660, Bunyan was imprisoned when he refused to cease preaching without a license. A twelve-year imprisonment followed, during which Bunyan did much of his writing. During his later years Bunyan enjoyed immense influence, and his services were demanded in almost every part of England. He died August 31, 1688, in London.

Book excerpt: John Bunyan was variously a tinker, soldier, Baptist minister, prisoner and writer of outstanding narrative genius which reached its apotheosis in this, his greatest work. It is an allegory of the Christian life of true brilliance and is presented as a dream which describes the pilgrimage of the hero - Christian - from the City of Destruction via the Slough of Despond, the Hill of Difficulty, the Valley of the Shadow of Death and Vanity Fair over the River of the Water of Life and into the Celestial City.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim's Progress, in Verse: Embracing the History of Christian From His Departure From the City of Destruction to His Entrance Into the Celestial City Bunyan's Pilgrim In Verse. As I walked through this wilderness To seek my crown, it seemed, I lighted on a certain den In which I slept and dreamed! I saw a man all clothed in rags, And they were filthy, too, Not fit to come before the king, With whom he had to do. A burden, too, was on his back, Which press'd him with its weight Just like a cart beneath its sheaves - The burden was so great. His face was now turned from bis house, And in his hands a book, For on the things he once so loved, He now did shun to look. I saw him reading in his book, All trembling and afraid - Then, with a cry of loud lament, "What shall I do?" he said. In this sad plight he reach'd his home - There sought to be resign'd, That neither wife nor child might know The troubles of his mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress: In Verse When this metrical version of Pilgrim's Progress was commenced, years ago, I did not think of making a book, though I have always shared with the multitude in the admiration of the genius of Bunyan. While meditating on the duties and trials of the Christian life, I took up Pilgrim's Progress, and began to read, pen in hand, for my own benefit. The more fully to enter into the spirit of the allegory, and the more easily to remember what I read, it occurred to me, as I went on, to throw portions of the narrative into verse. I did so, till I found, to my surprise, that my scraps of versification covered many pages. Finding my children interested in the perusal of my manuscript, as, from time to time, a few stanzas were added, I continued, at intervals, to read and meditate and write. Book excerpt: The Pilgrims Progress is a famous story of man's progress through life in search of salvation and remains one of the most entertaining allegories of faith ever written. Set against realistic backdrops of town and country, the powerful drama of the pilgrim's trials and temptations follows him in his harrowing journey to the Celestial City. An enormously influential 17th-century classic, universally known for its simplicity, vigor, and beauty of language. Pilgrim's Progress is read with the greatest pleasure.- George Whitefield (1714-1770) I find this book so full of matter, that I can seldom go through more than a page or half a page at a time. - John Newton (1725-1807) Next to the Bible, the book that I value most is Pilgrim's Progress. I believe I have read it through at least a hundred times... Prick him anywhere, and you will find that his blood is "bibline," the very essence of the Bible flows from him. - Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) That tenderest and most theological of books is pulsating with life in every word. - J. Gresham Machen (1881-1937) Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you'll begin to identify today's many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he's a true follower of Christ when he's really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you.
